  • Asteroid in Love & Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo no Dorei Majutsu

Posted on January 29, 2021 12:56 pm by Offkorn 1 Comment

Koisuru Asteroid resembles Yama no Susume quite a bit in structure, just focused on geology and astronomy instead of mountain climbing. Though primarily an educational schoolgirl club comedy it also features a not insignificant number of dramatic subplots (usually relationship-related) that crop up periodically, the appearance of which are usually as much of a surprise to the show’s characters as the viewer.

While also focused on comedy, Isekai Maou features a pretty much equal amount of action and drama as well. This is a series I’ve been on the fence about pretty much since it was first announced due to its synopsis bringing to mind Shinmai Maou no Testament (which did not handle its erotic elements well), but turns out it’s more like a combination of Overlord and Hagure Yuusha. It’s shockingly well made for an isekai harem series, although the ecchi content certainly does veer into overwhelming/awkward/creepy territory more often then I’d prefer.

Speaking of comedies: I recently tried watching Nami yo Kiitekure… only to lose interest pretty quickly about halfway through the first episode. It was just overly weird. Setup, characters; all weird.

  • FLCL -Alternative-

Posted on July 6, 2019 2:16 pm by Offkorn Comment

Kana, Tomomi, Mossan, and Hijiri are just ordinary highschool students going about their everyday lives and enjoying youth. Yet the sudden appearance of Haruko Haruhara with the cryptic remark “Seventeen won’t wait for you.” sets off a series of events which will force each of them to decide for themselves just what maturity means.

A schoolgirl-centric coming of age story with a large amount of comedy, periodic action, and minor ecchi aspects. It’s available in both movie and episodic format and shares a setting with the other FLCL series.

After Suguru wins a raffle prize for a free trip to Okinawa toward the end of summer vacation, one thing leads to another and soon the entire class along with Hikage, Kaede, and Kazuho set off for a fun-filled three days by the sea.

A comedic slice of life continuation of the series‘ first OVA with a touch of drama toward the end. Although the OVA can be skipped, having seen the series first is required for character introductions.

  • Nanae Chrono Presents: PEACE MAKER Kurogane

Posted on April 10, 2019 6:35 am by Offkorn Comment

While battered from the incident at Aburano Koji, the shinsengumi have not been broken. Though how much longer they can last becomes an open question when rumors of an imperial decree to utterly dismantle the shogunate begin to circulate.

A historical drama with occasional action scenes, minor comic relief elements, and a tertiary romance subplot. It’s a sequel to the earlier TV series, and having seen that first is necessary to recognize the flashbacks.

  • Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san OVAs

Posted on January 8, 2019 1:12 pm by Offkorn Comment

Though Kogarashi is capable of dispatching troublesome spirits with a single punch, living at Yuragi-sou exposes him to many hazards that his fists can’t protect him from: Yuuna’s telekinetic outbursts, Koyuzu’s transformative powers, and Oboro’s amorous ambushes, just to name a few.

A set of ecchi-centric short stories featuring the same variety of comedy as the main series. The first OVA takes place shortly after the 3rd episode, while the other two occur following the 12th.

Hanasakigawa High’s Poppin’ Party is far from the only band in town, and here they’re joined by the members of Afterglow, Pastel*Palettes, Roselia, & Hello, Happy World! as all five groups do their best to improve their appeal… with notably mixed results.
