  • Akudama Drive & 7seeds

Posted on February 7, 2021 10:36 am by Offkorn 2 Comments

Being a heist movie in series form, Akudama Drive‘s primary trait is momentum. To work, it’s got to keep the pace moving so that you don’t have time to dwell on the oddities present in the post-apocalyptic setting.

And it succeeds in that task beautifully.

7Seeds features a more conventional post-apocalyptic setting but doesn’t pace itself anywhere near as well; the first season is only barely watchable due to a combination of trying to juggle too many balls at once and concluding in one of the worst places possible.

The second season however improves the pacing quite a bit while simultaneously narrowing the focus, resulting in tighter, easier to follow plot and relationship developments. Making the work as a whole a decent enough choice for when you’re in the mood for relatively light post-apocalyptic survival content.

  • Joshikousei no Mudazukai & Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume o Minai

Posted on September 4, 2020 11:59 pm by Offkorn Comment

A schoolgirl comedy in the vein of Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (with a main character transplant from Nichijou), Joshikousei no Mudazukai‘s main problem is that a good chunk of its cast end up more annoying than entertaining when they go to extremes (there effectively being only half of a straight man to bounce the insanity off of contributes to that issue). So it’s basically as hit/miss as a random comedy would be and your mileage will definitely vary.

The school life comedy Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume o Minai meanwhile takes its cues from Bakemonogatari and Haruhi, mixing Bake‘s structure with Haruhi‘s sci-fi theme along with character traits from both. What it lacks in action and flashy visuals it makes up for with consistency and an avoidance of potentially offputting extreme behavior. The movie continuation unfortunately doesn’t share those positives, going deep into heavy drama territory as it does, and honestly I suggest skipping it since Shouko remaining a mystery will likely a produce better result than finding out what’s actually going on.

Oh, and there’s also Ore o Suki Nano wa Omae Dake ka yo (another school life comedy), which sadly doesn’t have anything at all going for it beyond creepy character design and nakedly artificial character behavior.

  • Carole & Tuesday & Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator

Posted on August 30, 2020 7:29 pm by Offkorn Comment

For the most part, Carole & Tuesday is a variation on the classic A Star is Born sort of story; you have two amateur musicians from vastly different backgrounds connecting to overcome early adversity and make music that moves the masses. The characters are mostly fun, but the core problem here is that much of the music the show features is pretty generic (particularly the songs in the first half or so) and doesn’t match the characters who are supposed to be singing them. Listened to on their own without the visuals some of the songs are surprisingly good, but almost none of them work within the context of the show.

It also has a number of other things going on as subplots, such as anti-immigration politics and corrupt businessmen, an obsessive stalker, fame-based breakdowns, a conniving manager, parental abandonment, and advanced AI supplanting humanity. All of these end up more engaging than the main story… which is more damning than praiseworthy.

As for the Index Accelerator spinoff, it appears to take place sometime before Index III and mostly features a bunch of new characters who don’t really have much going for them. Accelerator himself is a pretty annoying/one-note character (albeit not as bad as Touma), so its weird anyone would make a series nominally centered around him to begin with. Another oddity is the rather large amount of situational ecchi; girls wandering around and/or fighting in their underwear is quite common.

Speaking of ecchi: Don’t watch Plunderer unless you’re fond of sexual-assault level harassment guised as cartoonish comedy.

  • Assorted Non-Comedy Anime

Posted on August 27, 2020 9:43 am by Offkorn Comment

Fairy gone: I can’t think of a single good reason to keep watching this series beyond the pilot episode; the characters are awful and the fairies are Persona ripoffs.

Katsute KAMI Datta KEMONO-tachi e: This show does not make a good first impression. While it amazingly enough manages to overcome that handicap by focusing on the corruption of various characters’ personal desires, by the halfway point that effort turns out to be for naught when it goes all-in on the battle shounen angle. The (thankfully rare) bits of comedy are also uniformly terrible.

Assassins Pride: Questionable beginning aside, this briefly fooled me into thinking it was going to be a fairly standard ‘academy tournament’ or ‘rise of the underdog’ type of story… only to turn into a discordant mess of unrelated ideas instead.

Granbelm: A magical mecha battle royale series with Madoka-like characters and an early streak of comic relief centered on the protagonist’s airhead façade. The problem is that it starts when the battle has been raging for a year, so instead of exciting early eliminations you have an extended see-sawing stalemate that wears out its welcome before the series is even half over and big dramatic moments that come across as arbitrary. What’s really annoying though is that episodes 10 & 11 (which have an almost completely different theme) are pretty damn good.

How disappointing. An almost complete wash, I’m wondering if I should just stick to comedies.

  • PROMARE & Violet Evergarden Gaiden -Eien to Jidou Shuki Ningyou-

Posted on June 9, 2020 6:05 am by Offkorn Comment

Though Promare has a number of similarities to Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, it comes off more like an imitation than a celebration. It’s all style and no substance. The supporting Galo/Lio shorts are better, but there’s little point in watching them as stand-alones… and they don’t work well as prequels either.

The first Violet Evergarden movie meanwhile is a side-story (split into two parts) which appears to take place at some point after the series’ conclusion. Indistinguishable from the TV episodes the movie won’t change anyone’s minds regarding the franchise, but it can be watched as a stand-alone for those on the fence about whether or not they want to watch the series.

Personally, I’ve never been fond of the whole ‘proper lady, gilded cage’ setup/concept and the particular iteration featured here doesn’t do anything to change that opinion. Fortunately that’s only the theme for the movie’s first half; the second goes back to focusing on the delivery service. Unfortunately, it does so by heavily featuring a new child character who wants to join the office. So long as you don’t mind kids this works as a fitting conclusion. For me however it means pretty much the whole movie ends up a wash.

  • Gunjou no Magmell

Posted on July 4, 2019 3:46 pm by Offkorn Comment

The sudden appearance of an 8th continent in the middle of the ocean triggered a new age of exploration. Explorers of all types ventured to the landmass in search of previously unknown lifeforms and resources… only to instead be faced with hardship and assorted disasters. A cottage industry of relief workers specializing in search & rescue has sprung up as a result, and despite his chronic laziness You Yin is one of the best.

A mostly episodic action-drama with intermittent comic relief and a slight adventure theme. Be aware that the 5th and 9th episodes are comedic parodies in a completely different style than the others.

  • Märchen Mädchen

Posted on July 3, 2019 12:53 pm by Offkorn Comment

Socially awkward and as a result involuntarily a bit of a loner, Hazuki Kagimura spends much of her time engrossed in books of all kinds. One day after suddenly discovering a strange book in her possession she stumbles across someone who appears to be a mage straight out of one of her stories. Consumed by curiosity, she ends up following the mysterious girl through a portal leading to a fantasy world where those known as ‘mädchen’ learn different sorts of magic sourced from a variety of fairy tales.

A schoolgirl comedy with secondary action elements. It features occasional bursts of ecchi and a streak of drama threaded throughout.

  • Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur

Posted on June 30, 2019 1:05 pm by Offkorn Comment

The legendary sword Excalibur grants anyone it deems worthy incredible power and bestows upon them the title of ‘Arthur’. However… its standards are quite low and soon the world was overrun with many different varieties of Arthur to the point that reality itself became distorted. So now it falls to a team of six different Arthurs to track down and destroy a million Excaliburs of the past in the hopes of restoring the present to its natural state.

A parody-heavy comedy with secondary action elements, a moderate level of ecchi, and occasional bits of drama. Each televised episode also includes an episode of Jakusansei Million Arthur following the credits.

Tokyo is home to many people of all different varieties, both human and not, and it’s the Night Community Exchange Department’s job to handle any problems which may arise from the various nonhuman entities inhabiting the area. Arata Miyako has just joined the department’s Shinjuku office, and despite having no previous experience quickly finds himself thrown into the deep-end of mediating supernatural relationships due to his unusual ability to understand their speech.

A partly episodic procedural series with daily life elements, an occasional dramatic subplot, frequent comic relief, and a few minor action elements. Note that the manga-bundled extra episode is considered the 13th, while the other two are considered the 14th-15th.
