  • Null Peta & Space Battleship YAMATO – STAR BLAZERS 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi

Posted on February 9, 2021 12:22 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

A short, 5-min episode series that presents itself as a comedy should probably avoid trying to instill any kind of moral values. Null Peta disagrees. Here is a show that attempts to mine comedy from not only having to put up with a overbearing, naggy older sister… but actively wanting to subsume your life to her desires even if it kills you. Especially if it kills you. It’s infuriating on every level, particularly when it tries for drama/pathos near the end.

As a follow-up to Yamato 2199, Ai no Senshi-tachi is a pretty much complete disappointment. It has all the negatives of a Yamato work (idiotic character behavior, random plot developments, space mysticism, toxic nationalism/hero worship, etc.) without any of the surprisingly engaging combat encounters 2199 pulled off. All of the battles here seem to both start and end in arbitrary manners with inconsistent power levels and destructive potential. They come across like empty setpieces.

  • Sword Art Online: Alicization & War of Underworld

Posted on September 23, 2020 5:37 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

There are a great many problems with the three part sequel to the SAO Ordinal Scale movie.

The central one is the ill-conceived fusion of the sci-fi modern day plotline and Underworld’s essentially stand-alone fantasy plotline. The two never had any reason to mix. Assassin’s Creed does something similar, and the criticisms about the way that franchise mixes its past/present settings hold doubly true here since Underworld is effectively self-contained as opposed to being a reflection. The author could have easily wrote Alice and Eugeo’s story as its own thing with no association whatsoever to Kirito’s group and ended up with a far more consistent and immersive product.

Pretty much all of the remaining issues can be tied back to Kirito’s involvement with the story; spontaneous power-ups, random cameo appearances, last minute saves, questionable character motivation, harem elements, and bizarre plot twists all. Really, the only flaw that can truly be called its own is the re-occurring theme of using psychosexual megalomaniacs as main villains.

Vaguely related to all of that in a ‘you can probably watch this if you’re a fan of the genre’ sense are the series Runway de Warrette and Princess Connect! ReDive. The first of which is a fashion industry-focused Cinderella story overloaded with assholes who magically become nice while the latter is a conventional fantasy action-comedy whose protagonist has the personality of a particularly dull puppy.

  • Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken & Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka II: FAMILIA MYTH

Posted on August 31, 2020 8:53 am by Offkorn Comment

A fairly standard overpowered protagonist show, Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken’s defining feature is that almost everyone’s either extremely nice/reasonable or becomes so after being defeated in some manner (whether it be through force, conversation, or trickery). It’s very much a ‘sit back and enjoy yourself’ kind of production without much in the way of nuance or depth to get bogged down on; even the ecchi elements are practically wholesome when compared to what you normally find in harem series.

DanMachi’s second season on the other hand is very much not a ‘sit back and enjoy’ type of show, infested as it is with manufactured drama and asshole antagonists. A large number of storytellers get stuck between crafting the start of their story and concluding it, generally either because they get lost/sidetracked along the way or get greedy with early success and want to drag things out as long as possible. This appears to be a case of the latter.

None of these three arcs advance the various plot threads introduced by the prequel, and each features new antagonists whose only apparent purpose is to be defeated in random ways (likely to never be seen again). Not helping matters is that the action scenes are notably lacking… something. I’m not sure what exactly, just that they don’t match up favorably to earlier ones. Much like this season as a whole.

  • PSYCHO-PASS | Sinners of the System & Season 3

Posted on August 3, 2020 12:55 am by Offkorn Comment

The three Sinners of the System movies are a mixed bag. Being theoretically set a few months after the first Psycho-Pass movie, in practice only the third actually functions like a sequel.

The first is a side-story that completely overhauls Mika’s personality (for the better) and feels like it should be a prequel to the second season. It’s also not very good. The second is mostly a prequel flashback to the first season (framed by a few ‘modern day’ scenes set before the previous movie) focused on one of the S2 enforcers. This movie is quite good. And then there’s the 3rd movie, which…. Well, it’s sort of required watching if you plan to follow-up with Season 3, yet it comes across nothing like a Psycho-Pass work.

That third season begins after a multi-year timeskip, and quite a number of things have changed: Mika underwent another personality overhaul, Japan has relaxed its isolationist stance, Sibyl is gearing up to reveal its presence to the masses, Akane is off the team, and there are three new enforcers and two new inspectors. The old team is still around, just in a notably different role. It’s surprisingly good (clearly meant to be a return to Season 1 sensibilities) but suffers both from a number of unexplained developments and having Arata be so ludicrously overpowered. It also ends on a cliffhanger…

…resolved by a ‘movie’ follow-up. This bloated conclusion takes the concept of “homage” far too far. It apparently wanted to recapture the magic of the mid-series Season 1 climax, but instead stumbles time and again with both questionable action scenes and by just flat-out dragging things out for too long.

In the end it’s tough to recommend watching any of these besides the 2nd SS movie: The first is a pointless sidestory, the third lacks any Psycho-Pass sensibility, S3 requires having seen that third SS movie, and First Inspector is just plain tedious.

  • Youjo Senki: Saga of Tanya the Evil

Posted on September 21, 2019 1:02 pm by Offkorn Comment

The war should have ended following the Empire’s crushing victory on the Rhine Front. It did not. Instead the conflict has shifted to the southern continent, where remnants of the Republic’s army continue their stubborn resistance. A resistance Tanya is tasked with eliminating once and for all.

A direct continuation of the earlier TV series featuring similar content. It expects you to have already seen that and won’t work well as a stand-alone.
