In their third year of middle school Kotarou Azumi and Akane Mizuno end up in the same group during the sports festival, an arrangement that leads to the two becoming closer together. However this soon leads to complications, as Takumi Hira has long been attracted to Akane while Akane’s friend Chinatsu begins to develop an interest in Kotarou.

A school life love-polygon that’s presented in an almost entirely realistic style and develops at a measured pace. It’s a combination of lighthearted romance, small eddies of drama/angst, and comedic post-credits scenes.

  • Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine

Posted on August 10, 2017 3:27 am by Offkorn Comment

Though the king of Grannzreich already has a suitable heir, he has begun to worry that something may happen to him and so has summoned Heine Wittgenstein to be the royal tutor for his four younger songs. A task that ends up harder than it first appears, as each of them has his own particular quirks which have caused several previous tutors to quit.

A comedy with a mixture of both deadpan (Heine) and manic (three of the four princes) styles that briefly dips into action and drama toward the end.

  • ATOM: THE BEGINNING

Posted on August 9, 2017 1:19 pm by Offkorn Comment

Largely looked down on by their more conventional peers for their philosophical outlook on robotics, the two members of the prestigious Nerima University’s Lab 7 have finally created what they believe to be the perfect robot: An android with a heart and soul.

A prequel to the Tetsuwan Atom franchise that does not require having seen anything else. While it does contain some philosophy and technobabble, for the most part it’s a conventional action comedy.

  • World Fool News: PART II

Posted on August 9, 2017 12:06 am by Offkorn Comment

The bizarre workdays of the World Fool News staff continue as Takahashi seems to have become accustomed to the insanity surrounding him. Days of relative peace which are soon tested when the CEO of a rival broadcasting agency sets his sights on poaching Shimohira.

A deadpan absurdist comedy that’s structured like a newscast and features a small romance subplot. It’s not necessary to watch the prequel unless you want character introductions.

Expected to fight his way to the top of his high school as part of a family tradition, Hikaru Onigashima has different ideas and decides to instead trade places with his twin sister. Now Hinako Nakayama must attend an all-boys school while fending off the constant challenges the name “Hikaru Onigashima” evokes.

The series is unconventional in two ways. The first is that it’s structured like a documentary of past events and has the characters re-telling the story from a future point in time, while the second is that parts of each episode are mixed into the OP sequence. Content-wise it balances brief action scenes, misunderstanding-based comedy, and harem-building.

  • FRAME ARMS GIRL

Posted on August 7, 2017 11:13 am by Offkorn Comment

Though several people received a test model Frame Arms Girl named Gourai in the mail, Ao Gennai was the only one able to activate it. As a result she’s soon inundated with other Frame Arms models all wanting to battle Gourai.

A series that’s part proxy battle action, part advertisement, and part ‘cute girls doing cute things’. It uses a mix of conventional (Ao) and CG (the Frame Arms) animation while the ecchi takes the form of constant panty-shots alongside the occasional suggestive scene.

  • Busou Shoujo Machiavellism

Expelled from his last school after being involved in a huge brawl, Fudou Nomura is accepted into the Shiritsu Aichi Kyousei Academy, a school that has become known for taking in problem students and ‘correcting’ them. Now Fudou must defeat the school’s five-member disciplinary group if he wants to continue living his carefree life.

A harem action comedy with a moderate ecchi streak that transforms into an action drama for the last three episodes or so. The action is heavy on swordplay and martial arts while the comedy is mostly reaction based.

  • Alice to Zouroku

Posted on August 5, 2017 11:01 pm by Offkorn Comment

One day certain people began to manifest the ability to materialize their thoughts in physical form. The source of this power is an entity known as the red queen, which after interacting with human researchers has come to take the shape and personality of a young girl. Given the name Sana and kept secluded in a secret research facility, she learns about the outside world through other research subjects and decides to escape to see it for herself.

This show is made up of three parts, the first being an action comedy primarily focused on separating Sana from the researchers. From there it switches over to a slice of life approach and features both Sana’s first experiences living a normal life as Zouroku’s granddaughter along with his day-to-day business as a florist. Finally, the last segment goes a bit heavier on the drama by introducing a new antagonist of a sort and exploring the origins of Sana’s power.

With the events surrounding Souichirou Shimogamo’s death resolved a sense of peace and quiet returns to the city. A peace soon broken by Akadama’s son, who has returned seeking revenge after a century-long absence.

A mostly laid-back and ambling character-driven slice-of-life that has occasional bursts of dramatic plot development. You don’t have to see the prequel to follow events here, but it would help immensely since this is a relationship-focused series.

  • GRANBLUE FANTASY: The Animation

Posted on August 3, 2017 6:26 am by Offkorn Comment

While attempting to escape from onboard an airship, Lyria and the former lieutenant Katalina end up separated in an explosion. Seeing the light from the ground, the adventurer Gran sets off to investigate and ends up having to protect Lyria from pursuing soldiers until Katalina can catch up. From there it’s not long before the three of them are bound together in an island-hopping journey spanning the world.

A high fantasy action-adventure series structured much like a JRPG game. Be aware that the show concludes in the 12th episode, with the 13th being something like an alternate universe bonus-OVA.
