  • ONE PUNCH MAN

Posted on May 15, 2017 2:32 pm by Offkorn Comment

Training so hard that he went prematurely bald, the part-time hero Saitama has become the strongest man alive. So strong that most enemies are utterly annihilated by a single punch… so strong that he barely feels much of anything anymore. One day he meets a young cyborg who desperately wants to become his disciple after witnessing that power, and his condition for this is for the two of them join the Hero Association together.

An action-heavy and somewhat gory battle shounen parody. Though initially comedy-centric and focused on Saitama, it eventually adopts more of an ensemble structure while introducing hints of drama.

  • Sakamichi no Apollon: KIDS ON THE SLOPE

Posted on May 15, 2017 8:11 am by Offkorn Comment

An introverted boy with acute anxiety issues stemming from continuously having to move from school to school, Kaoru Nishimi tries to keep to himself. This all changes on his first day at a new school following a chance meeting with Sentarou Kawabuchi, a jazz-loving delinquent. It’s an encounter that will change the way he sees the world.

A school-life relationship drama set in the late 1960’s. While it has a bit of action in the form of schoolyard fights and some situational comedy arising from the mismatched pair of protagonists, for the most part it’s a serious coming-of-age story with a jazz-band backdrop.

The mercenary company Cosmoranger J9 consists of four core members: The leader Issac, their pilot Bowie, Kid the sharpshooter, and Angel, an espionage/sabotage specialist. Their self-proclaimed mission is to keep the various criminal organizations in check by taking on jobs the authorities cannot.

An action series featuring all different types of action, from blaster fights on the ground to super-robot mecha fights in space. While it does include dramatic aspects, they’re presented in an over-the-top manner that may be difficult to take seriously.

One day after school Kasumi Toyama comes across a trail of star stickers, at the end of which she discovers an abandoned guitar in the storage room behind a pawn shop. Immediately enchanted with the instrument, she soon resolves to create a band.

A schoolgirl-centric ‘making the band’ comedy with a subfocus on character relationship drama.

  • Torment: Tides of Numenera – Endgame

Posted on May 12, 2017 7:53 pm by Offkorn Comment

Finally got around to seriously playing the game and just finished it.

Turned out my earlier annoyance regarding the multiple resource pools was mostly an over-reaction; once you get a point or two of Edge it becomes practically impossible to deplete them. I only ended up resting 3-4 times over the course of the entire game, and could’ve probably got by doing it just once if I had used those full-heal cyphers. That said the game isn’t very large by RPG standards… maybe about the size of Tyranny (perhaps a bit smaller).

It certainly is Planescape: Torment revisited though. Much like its predecessor, this game rewards high Intelligence values on the PC, heavily promotes exploring every branch of every dialog tree, and allows most confrontations to be solved/avoided without engaging in combat. That last one is particularly good since (also like PS:T) combat is kind of a pain.

However it’s the gameplay as a whole that’s holding it back rather than just the combat: The character building system is lacking, with many skill/ability choices being either useless or redundant, and you never really feel particularly powerful or godlike even at max level (which is Tier 4). Attack abilities don’t do all that much damage and companions who aren’t in the party not gaining experience certainly doesn’t help either. Equipment ends up being the main source of combat effectiveness, and the variety in that department is notably lacking (while there are tons of cyphers/oddities, there are only a few interesting weapons and a highly limited armor selection). There’s not really anything to collect either aside from merecasters.

Which all adds up to this being the perfect game for people who love replaying the exact same scenario while making slightly different choices (since those choices do actually tend to affect things here). Anyone looking for a more physically engaging or mechanic-based experience however will most likely be disappointed.

  • Choujikuu Kidan: Southern Cross

Posted on May 9, 2017 12:57 pm by Offkorn Comment

Far in the future humanity has begun to colonize other parts of the galaxy, with one of their most recent colonies being located at the edges of known space. Here the Southern Cross defense force is drawn into a war following the sudden appearance of an advanced alien race in the skies above. A conflict in which Jeanne Fránçaix, the inexperienced and irresponsible 2nd officer of the 15th Squad, will end up playing a large role.

Lots of mecha action with periodic bursts of comic relief arising from Jeanne’s carefree personality. Eventually various dramatic revelations are added along with a few romance subplots.

  • GANTZ:O

Posted on May 7, 2017 1:41 pm by Offkorn Comment

After being stabbed to death in a train station, Masaru Katou finds himself transported to a sparse room filled with several other people. There it’s explained that his old life is over and in this new life he must hunt down and kill aliens in an elaborate death game.

A full-CGI sequel to the 2004 TV series Gantz that can be viewed as a stand-alone story. It mostly consists of gore-heavy action scenes, though there’s also some drama and a small amount of romance mixed in.

  • Ajin OVAs

Posted on May 7, 2017 9:03 am by Offkorn Comment

Short stories taking place both before and during the main Ajin series.

The first is a prequel focused on drama featuring Shinya, a university student who discovers that he’s an Ajin following a fatal motorcycle accident. The second is a collection of comedic ‘behind-the-scenes’ character-based segments, each of which takes place at a different part of the parent series. The third is an action-centric prequel centering on the event that triggered Satou’s transformation from soldier to terrorist.

  • Ajin

Posted on May 6, 2017 5:45 pm by Offkorn Comment

Ajin: Immortal beings able to manifest powerful avatars made of dark particles. Hunted by the government for research purposes and vilified as inhuman monsters, a group of Ajin come together to form a terrorist organization with visions of forcing reform. Meanwhile, an otherwise normal student recently revealed to be an Ajin finds himself on the run from both groups.

The first half of the show is an action drama focused on Kei Nagai’s capture and eventual flight from government agents, with Satou’s terrorist actions providing the backdrop. The second half however transitions into something closer to an agency thriller, with the conflict between special forces and the terrorists taking center stage.

Posted on May 3, 2017 5:23 pm by Offkorn Comment

A collection of short stories that take place all throughout the Monogatari series, each featuring one of the girls discussing some sort of supernatural-seeming phenomenon with Koyomi.

Almost all of the episodes are effectively stand-alones that resemble the main series entry they take place near. A couple however (8 & 12) have explicit ties to the core storyline and won’t make much/any sense if you haven’t seen several of the main entries.
