  • Returner’s Defiance #1-3 & The Grand Imperial Prince #1-2

    Posted on February 23, 2025 1:22 pm by Offkorn Comment

    I picked up Bruce Sentar‘s Returner’s Defiance series expecting a situation like Heretic Spellblade‘s only to end up with something more like Na Honjaman Level-Up crossed with Mob Sorcery (although it does happen to feature a specific group of women completely obsessed with the protagonist). The harem development so far has been kind of forced, but the characters and events have been entertaining enough.

    Speaking of books that feature groups of women being obsessed with the protagonist, Kingsley Khan‘s The Grand Imperial Prince series takes that scenario and dials it up to eleven. To be honest I’m not really sure what I was expecting when I picked it up, but the first two novels in the series absolutely live up to their titles. These books are porn first and story second… but there is a story there (one featuring some surprisingly fitting eldritch horror elements). What stands out most to me though is the way the author starts off with the depravity cranked up high enough that when the protagonist takes over his actions almost manage to come off as restrained in comparison.

  • Cardaclysm: SHARDS OF THE FOUR & MONSTER TRAIN

    Posted on February 20, 2025 8:46 am by Offkorn Comment

    Cardaclysm is a puzzle-like card game in which the first turn or two are the most important. A single hit to your avatar will cause a loss, so basically you want to kill everything first turn, or play just enough cards so that your retaliation will allow a clear on the second. It’s kind of interesting but also incredibly simple.

    Monster Train is essentially Slay the Spire with tower-defense elements. The games are extremely similar and if you liked that then this will be right up your ally. The Last Divinity DLC is worth picking up as well since it both adds more to the base game alongside a totally new (and optional) final boss fight which plays markedly differently.

  • Incubus Inc. #1-3 & Corsairs & Cataclysms #5

    Posted on February 20, 2025 5:33 am by Offkorn Comment

    While the atmosphere of Randi Darren‘s Incubus Inc. series is somewhat similar to Privateer’s Commission‘s, it starts out a very different series. At the beginning it stands apart for having the protagonist take a backseat in most roles while featuring sex scenes like a Japanese LN would food porn. This works surprisingly well and the first two books end up enjoyable.

    The third however shakes things up in highly questionable ways following a time-skip. Suddenly the protagonist here starts acting like the protagonist of Privateer and all sorts of highly questionable event developments occur one after another. I had to drop it a little over a third of the way through.

    Although the conclusion to Devan Drake‘s Corsairs & Cataclysms series does end up a little on the fast-paced side of things, it manages to avoid feeling rushed while wrapping up all the major outstanding plot threads. Honestly it’s incredibly impressive. The only annoying aspect being how it seems like the author has a bit of a fixation on Raven not being part of the harem.

  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE #4 & The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #10

    Posted on February 18, 2025 1:42 pm by Offkorn Comment

    Not much to say about the fourth Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei novel, as it’s much the same in atmosphere to the prequels. So if you greatly enjoyed the character behavior up to this point it should continue to deliver. Personally though, the titular optimism is starting to wear on me.

    The tenth Kuitsume Youhei installment feels phoned-in. It’s not bad exactly, but just comes across like filler. It seems to only exist as an excuse to inform the protagonists of the missing dark gods’ names… but you could’ve just had the known dark god list them off and not have bothered with this otherwise pointless trip.

  • Dimension Wave #2 & Mercedes and the Waning Moon

    Posted on February 13, 2025 3:43 am by Offkorn Comment

    The second Dimension Wave novel goes in completely different direction from the first, right into solo base-building territory. The main problem with this being that it doesn’t make any sense at all for a single person to get transported to the island instead of their whole party, especially in what’s supposed to be an MMO, let alone be indefinitely trapped there and completely isolated from the outside. Probably going to drop it here.

    Kaketa Tsuki no Mercedes has a misleading English subtitle (The Dungeoneering Feats of a Discarded Vampire Aristocrat, the Japanese subtitle is perfectly on-point though) considering that she’s never discarded. Quite the opposite. It’s the variety of overpowered protagonist series where due to certain circumstances they don’t actually realize how overpowered they are, and in general mood it reminds me a bit of Moto Ansatsusha, Tensei shita Kizoku no Reijou ni Narimashita minus the romance elements.

  • For Whom the belle Tolls & The Mirror

    Posted on February 11, 2025 1:40 pm by Offkorn Comment

    Jaysea Lynn‘s For Whom the Belle Tolls is a shockingly good paranormal romance with a fitting blend of comedy and drama (along with a small bit of action and a number of detailed sex scenes in the second half). My only complaints are how the counterpart to ‘people can change for the better’ is never addressed and how the reincarnation issue is ultimately handled.

    The initial resolution was perfect, not least because it didn’t come across as a trite ass-pull. So to suddenly change that at the last moment comes across as nothing but a… trite ass-pull. One made worse due to how the epilogue makes clear that there ended up being no functional difference between the two. That’s a very minor issue though and isn’t anywhere near enough to ruin the story.

    I wasn’t thrilled with how the first book in Nora Roberts‘ Lost Bride trilogy ended, and so had put off reading the second until now. Turns out the trip was just a brief arbitrary thing… presumably to force that cliffhanger ending. Nothing actually changes regarding the daily life routine or character dynamics, which for the most part is a positive. The only thing that really sticks out negatively is the somewhat high level of repetition in both conversations and certain events.

  • SONGS of CONQUEST & King’s Bounty II

    Posted on February 6, 2025 8:33 pm by Offkorn Comment

    Songs of Conquest is, simply speaking, a Heroes of Might and Magic clone. If that’s what you’re looking for it should scratch the itch, but I was hoping for something leaning a bit more toward RPG instead of turn-based strategy.

    Which brings me to King’s Bounty II, which is both quite a bit like previous installments in the franchise and notably different in that it leans harder on the RPG aspect. Character building is the same except that higher level skills are now gated by alignment choices, army recruitment is the same except now each unit has a maximum number regardless of Leadership score, exploration is the same although now it’s done in a ground-level over-the-shoulder view while featuring far fewer enemy encounters, and finally questing has been greatly expanded (albeit still with the same bizarrely disjointed English dialog).

    For the most part I had a lot of fun going through it as a Paladin, but there are some notable oddities like Celestial Warrior recruitment being hidden (the recruiter pops up after a specific quest in an old out of the way part of the Mage Tower) and the legendary armor rewards apparently being randomized (so make sure to save before completing the Julian and Rosaline quest and various Cult of Unity subquests). For army composition I went with:

    Spirits of Light -> Disciples -> Bear Riders -> Celestial Warriors
    Swordsman -> Cavalrymen
    Crossbowman -> Royal Mages
    Raiders -> Mercenaries -> Red Dragon
    Free Archers -> Dark Adepts

    Wasn’t really fond of the Cavalrymen to be honest since they died weirdly often, but you can’t really complain about the Morale boost they give. Had a naked 5,590 Leadership at Paladin level 30 with I assume all totems collected (also 90 Knowledge, 15 Magic Power, and 5 Warfare), meaning at least one rank in the Glory skill is necessary (assuming no relevant equipment) to recruit the maximum number of Celestial Warriors and/or a Red Dragon. Chimera oddly require 2,500 per unit and so need an insane 7,500 to max them out which I’m not sure is actually possible to achieve even if it were worth it.

    Recruitment Unlock Quests

      Rank 3/4 Order Troops: Enemies Among Men
      Celestial Warriors: Cult of Unity, Haven of the Enlightened Ones
      Red Dragon: Lyssa’s Dungeon
      Chimeras: Beauty and the Beasts
      Bone Dragon: Fatal Voyage

    Finally we come to skills. At level 30, and having done all quests, you’ll have 128 Skill points and 43/41 Alignment points. So you’ll have enough to both max out one tree and unlock the second tier of the opposing tree, assuming you do the latter first to avoid getting locked out of those choices. I’d suggest getting at least 8 Order points on any character in order to grab Glory and at least the first rank of Training (you can always respec after hitting max level). After that it’s a choice between maxing out either Power or Finesse; the third and fourth tiers of Order/Anarchy are garbage in comparison. I’d also strongly suggest avoiding all the money-increasing skills since you’ll have no shortage of that as long as you explore a decent amount and make use of the post-battle heal function.

    Now it’s time to play through as a Mage to see how effective trying to win primarily through spellcasting is. For Paladin I ended up going Fire/Life for the Inspire, Burning Touch, and Inner Flame spells, and so for Mage I plan to go Death/Ice to focus on debuffs and Air for Chain Lightning, Portal, and Summon Chimera.

  • ULTIMATE LEVEL 1: NEW FREEDOMS & NEW POTENTIAL

    Posted on February 4, 2025 1:24 pm by Offkorn Comment

    The fifth of Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 novels continues along the path previous entries set out. Nothing particularly noteworthy one way or the other in it beyond that there are quite a few technical errors in the last quarter and the cliffhanger ending.

    New Potential, however, is something completely different. I almost dropped it barely a chapter in since I most definitely do not read this kind of book to follow restricted or de-powered protagonists. That this series has mostly been more of an ensemble thing meant having that taken away was another mark against it. Still, I decided to force my way through and… yeah, it’s not very good. I’ll give the follow-up a chance, but my expectations now that the protagonist has been boosted worlds ahead of the rest of the party are at rock bottom.

  • WIEDERGEBURT #1-5 & Privateer’s CommissioN

    Posted on February 3, 2025 12:58 pm by Offkorn Comment

    Another series that’s been floating around my recommendations page for ages, Brandon Varnell‘s Wiedergeburt novels (subtitle: Legend of the Reincarnated Warrior) mimic Asian LNs in structure.

    The first book starts off quite awful with an exceptionally clunky writing style only to improve a shocking decree after the time warp. From there through the fourth book it remains a fairly entertaining overpowered protagonist series, the only issue being the rather arbitrary flashbacks (which the author freely admits at one point were just an excuse to include sex scenes). The fifth one however comes across as more forced than usual and future event developments look to continue on in that mold.

    Randi Darren‘s Privateer’s Commission is one of the few books that survived the purge of anything that looked like it might be a fanservice-first series from my recommendation page, and I’m rather glad it did because it turned out to be a lot of fun with some hilarious ‘comedy of errors’ sequences. Not sure it’ll hold up if any potential continuation gives in to consummating the harem… but as a stand-alone it works incredibly well.

  • HIGH ARTIFICER & SHE OF MANY DRAGONS

    Posted on February 1, 2025 7:10 am by Offkorn Comment

    The description for the finale of David North‘s Guardian of Aster Fall series is a bit misleading. The whole academy thing is just a trigger to get him involved with the high council and galaxy as a whole. As a result this book is really mostly about setting the stage for the author’s next series, which is not to say it doesn’t serve admirably as a conclusion; it does.

    I picked up She of Many Dragons on whim about a month ago only to keep putting off reading it… and perhaps there was some kind of subliminal warning there because I ended up having to drop it about a quarter of the way through. It starts off well enough only to first stumble when her ‘friend’ inexplicably discovers her dragon aspect. I almost gave up right there but decided to push through. Not long after however that scene nearly repeats itself when a random thief does the same while somehow infiltrating a high-class hotel. Just… no.
