  • My Magical Career at Court #2 & Enough with This Slow Life! #2-4

Posted on January 1, 2024 2:45 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru novel showcases the source of the protagonist’s power; namely her ability to endlessly adapt to whatever situation she finds herself in. Of course why she has that ability is still a mystery, but considering where the book ends it seems likely it’s related to elves in some manner.

Speaking of elves, I had held off on continuing the Tensei shite High Elf ni Narimashita ga, Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita series after some reservations about some foreshadowing at the end of the first book. Fortunately, the child character doesn’t stay a child for long and fairly quickly moves off in a different direction. So for the most part the series remains a solo journey through various societies that get influenced both directly and indirectly by the protagonist’s whims.

It’s certainly nothing fancy, and there’s an issue with repetitious exposition, yet I’m still looking forward to future installments.

  • FINDING AVALON -THE QUEST OF A CHAOSBRINGER- & As a Reincarnated Aristocrat #3

Posted on December 25, 2023 2:49 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first Saiaku no Avalon novel resembles Shujinkou ja Nai! in some ways, such as how the main character takes over a side-character’s body in a game world (although it’s an antagonist rather than an ally in this case) and the way his sister seems to be far more powerful that he is (when not using exploits). Main difference being that this MC is focused on becoming a protagonist on his own behind the scenes instead of trying to avoid it by raising others up.

Tensei Kizoku Kantei Skill de Nariagaru‘s third installment appears to wrap up all the key battles of the war, setting the stage for a potential upcoming kingdom-building segment. Quite a few overpowered retainers have been acquired at this point and I’m not really sure what kind of future event developments could even even pretend to threaten them.

  • Inheritance & A Matter of Secrets and Spies

Posted on December 24, 2023 9:19 am by Offkorn Comment

The first book of an intended trilogy, Nora Roberts‘ Inheritance is an urban fantasy mystery/romance with occasional horror/suspense elements which starts off quite good and stays that way for the most part. The main issue being the fantasy elements, which become more pronounced as the novel progresses up the point of complete saturation at the (cliffhanger) ending. They work best here when used subtly rather than boldly out in the open.

Honor Raconteur‘s tenth Henri Davenforth novel is basically more of the same as far as character interactions go. What’s different is the 3-part open-ended structure. You basically have three separate cases that all end up both related and incomplete, which in turn makes the book itself feel incomplete. I think it would’ve been better if the vacation segment stayed a simple vacation instead of trying to squeeze in a criminal element.

Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou! #6: This series‘ sixth entry is split into two parts. The first focuses on the unveiling of the protagonist’s invention and a hint of the future attention he’ll attract, while the second is the start of an academy arc. The author claims in the Afterword that ‘some things can only happen in a school setting’ as a defense for its inclusion… but I have to call bullshit on that.

Shinja Zero no Megami-sama to Hajimeru Isekai Kouryaku #10: This marks the start of the protagonist’s journey into the past. Featuring an almost entirely new cast of characters it nevertheless keeps up the general mood and feel of what came before. Will be interesting to see how/if all these fairly massive changes affect the future timeline.

Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou sugite #14: Serving as the series‘ conclusion, this final entry does a remarkably good job of wrapping up loose ends. The way they kind of just throw the whole Cave Quest plotline in the trash is a bit too meta, and it really never should have been included at all, but there’s otherwise nothing to complain about.

TenSura #17: This book of side-stories defied my earlier expectations. While the first one is pretty weak the rest are quite good and shed some light on both what the fire dragon was up to chasing soul fragments and how the Empire is going about rebuilding (neither of which would’ve worked as part of the main plotline). Looks like I’ll be continuing the series after all.

Nise Seijo #3: I suspected this novel might be the series’ conclusion, but that turns out to not quite be the case. While it does conclude the main plotline, the aftermath/epilogue is left for a fourth and final book. Definitely interested to see where the characters go from here.

  • The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows & You Were Experienced, I Was Not: OUR DATING STORY

Posted on December 15, 2023 9:26 am by Offkorn Comment

The massively titled Isshun de Chiryou shiteita noni Yakutatazu to Tsuihou sareta Tensai Chiyushi, Yami Healer Toshite Tanoshiku Ikiru is a variety of overpowered protagonist harem in which the protagonist serves as the straightman to a cast full of goofballs. Not much else to say about it since the healer gimmick is sort of undermined by his scalpel ability and mastery of defensive/enhancement magic.

I picked up Keikenzumi na Kimi to, Keiken Zero na Ore ga, Otsukiai suru Hanashi. on a whim hoping for some kind of cute romantic comedy. Unfortunately, while there are some cute parts, there’s far more awkwardness and cringe with not really any comedy. The fairly strong indication there’ll be love triangle elements in the future does it no favors either.

  • The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects & The BEGINNING AFTER the END #1-2

Posted on December 9, 2023 2:51 pm by Offkorn Comment

Another book with an age-gap romance, Ryoumin 0-nin Start no Henkyou Ryoushu-sama doesn’t end up as creepy as Reijou wa Ryuutei Heika o Kouryakuchuu (despite the much larger gap) primarily because the older of the two isn’t actively pursuing it. That issue aside the author seems to be interested in playing around a bit with character tropes, as the princess ends up hostile while the noble 2nd son with a harem turns out to be incredibly altruistic.

Not sure how far you can take a kingdom building series that features a relatively simple-minded protagonist who’s only skilled at combat though. Some sort of advisor will have to be introduced before long.

TurtleMe‘s first two The Beginning After the End novels greatly resemble the start of your average reincarnation isekai light novel. The main twist being that the protagonist is from an urban fantasy version of Earth where only people with exceptional combat ability are allowed to become the king of a nation. Anyway, the first book is perfectly fine if maybe a little rushed. The second though… the second has some issues.

Introducing a steam engine, kicking off an industrial revolution, somehow won’t majorly affect the world? And where exactly did the protagonist learn about the internal workings of steam engines or how to draw technical blueprints for that matter (he was a combat-obsessed orphan in his previous life)? The author seems to have completely lost sight of their own character. The confrontation with the king was also baffling and considering the next book is the start of an academy arc I do not think I’m going to follow it any further.

While it has a number of surprisingly cute romantic comedy segments, the age-gap in Yarinaoshi Reijou wa Ryuutei Heika o Kouryakuchuu ends up impossible to look past due to how often it gets called out. It’s a very weird dynamic, a 16-year old in a 10-year old’s body and a 19-year old with a childish split-personality, that never really manages to rise above awkward. The second book in particular has some issues in that respect.

Also a romantic comedy, Watashi ga Seijo? Iie, Akuyaku Reijou desu! (which has a totally different English title) is basically what you’d get if you condensed the Higeki no Genkyou series down into a single book. Apart from the utterly bizarre vaccination focus in the first half it’s decent enough, just be forewarned that much of the comedy is based on embarrassment and/or misunderstandings.

  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE by the Optimistic Lord & Moon Blossom ASURA #2

Posted on November 29, 2023 12:42 am by Offkorn Comment

Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei (English subtitle: ~PRODUCTION MAGIC Turns a Nameless Village into the STRONGEST FORTIFIED CITY~) is, just as its title would suggest, a pretty carefree story. The protagonist has a personality similar to Tensura‘s while the plot developments and general character behavior is over-the-top in a fairly random manner. It’s a fine time-waster, just don’t expect anything from it.

The second Gekka no Shoujo Asura novel is much like the first. Except with a bit more perversion, a bit less action, and an ending partway through its plotline (although admirably not on a cliffhanger). I’ll probably grab the next book to see how the arc concludes… but I’m not sure I’ll go any further than that.

  • Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles #1-20

Posted on November 28, 2023 2:07 pm by Offkorn Comment

Over the course of its first twenty novels, Seirei Gensouki is an overpowered protagonist harem with an intermittent food subfocus that can be essentially broken down into two major arcs.

The first (books 1-15) establishes the protagonist’s early connections and concludes his revenge. There’s little to complain about in this stretch besides an apparent fondness for cliffhanger endings, and the author even shows some restraint in the love interest department by not having his cousin or half-sister fall for him. The second (books 16-20) is much shorter and concerns itself with both the protagonist’s and hero’s awakenings into higher beings.

Frankly the awakening and amnesia plotlines aren’t really doing anything for me and I’m uncertain whether or not I’ll ever read any further. While it’s a decent method to reduce the love interest count to a manageable number, it comes across as exceptionally arbitrary and I highly doubt the amnesia will stick.

Posted on November 26, 2023 12:33 pm by Offkorn Comment

The fifth Free Life Fantasy novel wraps up both the island arc and the underworld temple arc. No complaints with how the ‘player home’ concept was implemented.

Shujinkou ja Nai!‘s second entry also doesn’t do anything either particularly noteworthy or annoying. Only odd part is how no one seems weirded out by the flirting between the protagonist and his in-universe sister.
