  • Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter #5-8

Posted on August 15, 2023 12:39 pm by Offkorn Comment

Koujo Denka no Kateikyoushi‘s second arc differs from the first in that the focus is far more on the girls than the protagonist and how they grow (or, in one particular case, regress) in his absence.

It’s also notable for ending each of the first three books on a cliffhanger, a pretty painful state of affairs I’m extremely glad I sidestepped by waiting for the whole thing to be released before reading.

Overall I’d say these four books end up a near-perfect continuation/expansion of the series with pretty much nothing to complain about besides the above cliffhangers. That said… I do not see any way this harem situation could possibly be resolved amicably. Even if we were to dismiss the younger girls as simple crushes, that still leaves four (two duke’s daughters, the merchant girl, and his foster sister) who aren’t particularly close with one another in the running.

The second Ore dake Level ga Agaru Sekai book is much like the first. It just sort of breezes along doing its own thing not really bothering with any sort of exposition.

Mushoku Tensei‘s twenty-third installment on the other hand waffles about quite a bit. Not much really happens in it beyond a meeting with the mercenaries from the protagonist’s days of impotence and the antagonist acquiring a final ally toward the end.

Looks like there will be one more book of setup and then the twenty-fifth will presumably focus on the showdown with the Man-God’s agents. With only one book left after that… I’m left somewhat concerned over how the series will end.

  • Death’s DAUGHTER #5 & Full Clearing Another World #8

Posted on August 11, 2023 8:08 am by Offkorn Comment

This fifth Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo book is the weakest of the series so far, primarily due some bizarre structuring: It starts off with the trip to Mekia (which despite taking up half the book feels quite short), follows that up with several interludes (a couple of which seem achronological), and then continues on into the invasion of the Empire for the last quarter.

There’s a distinct disjointedness about it and if the next book actually ends up the last I can’t see how all these dangling plot threads (the assassins, the other death god, Olivia’s death god, the semi-love triangle, Mekia’s goals, etc.) could possibly be resolved. I fear it will turn out like Fushi no Kami.

Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s eighth volume (English title: The Hero of Light and the Demon War) is more of what you’ve come to expect from the series. The protagonist continues to dispatch foes with what to outsiders looks like unfathomable power while being utterly hopeless with resolving the ever-growing harem situation he finds himself in.

  • Disillusioned Adventurers #3 & Rebuild World II

Posted on August 10, 2023 2:23 am by Offkorn Comment

The third Ningen Fushin novel unsurprisingly has a bit of a focus on the priest. More surprising is that it’s pretty much entirely focused on story/character development without any hobby-based sidetracking, leaving me cautiously optimistic for future installments.

Like the first, the second Rebuild World volume is split into two books (English titles: Users of the Old Domain & Revengeware). Both are very heavy on action while not really doing much to advance toward the presumed end goal, although we do get confirmation that Alpha’s goal will be detrimental to a large number of people along with evidence she’s not the only one working toward it.

So this volume is mostly about providing an excuse to boost the protagonist’s power/resources while introducing a secondary political background plotline that will almost certainly cause complications down the line.

  • Assorted Fantasy Isekai LNs

I’ve been playing catch-up a bit with all the books that’ve piled up while I’ve been preoccupied with ESO. So rather than drawing these out two at a time I’m just going to stuff them all together.

Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru (As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World) #1–2: This series is basically your standard ‘reincarnated into a world suspiciously identical to a game world’, just set in a fantasy world which happens to include some game-like traits. So the protagonist can take advantage of his gameplay knowledge but does not know anything about the world or people that inhabit it. Aside from some weird expectations in the beginning (no idea why he thinks a 3 year old would/should be an expert at warfare) it’s a perfectly acceptable time-waster.

I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage #3: I was greatly worried about the third Moto Saikyou no Kenshi novel’s switch to an academy setting, but it handles it surprisingly well while also revealing exactly why he can’t use magic and appears to have no skills. I ended up enjoying it even despite the inclusion one of my least favorite fantasy isekai tropes (game-like dungeon-delving).

The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles #4: Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s fourth entry comes across as a bit rushed. It’s basically an extended rescue mission that feels very much like a highlight reel instead of a proper story.

Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 SUPER CHEAT POWERS #10: The tenth Lv 2 kara Cheat book looks to be where I’ll have to stop; the queen’s attraction to the elementary schooler with the appearance of an adult takes a rather central place toward the end and it’s just incredibly cringy all-around. Also an issue is that it’s hinted Blossom’s relationship status will travel in a similar direction.

  • Magic Stone Gourmet & The Apothecary Witch #2

Posted on July 29, 2023 2:20 pm by Offkorn Comment

I didn’t really have any expectations going into Maseki Gourmet (English subtitle: eating magical power made me the Strongest!), so it ended up a bit of a pleasant surprise that despite the name there isn’t any notable food focus. Beyond that it’s a fairly by the numbers reincarnation isekai that suffers from a somewhat strange dialog style and a few highly questionable events.

The second Kusushi no Majo novel stays the course the previous one set while laying some groundwork for potential dramatic development down the line. Though it doesn’t do anything particularly exciting, nor does it make any missteps.

  • Hunted & Solo Leveling #8

Posted on July 24, 2023 10:18 am by Offkorn Comment

It came as something of a surprise that Hunted was not the conclusion of Vanessa Nelson‘s Grey Gates series. No idea why I thought it was going to be a trilogy, but I did.

It’s pretty much as far from a conclusion as you can get, opening up the world in some questionable directions and leaning into the earlier hinted romance. Honestly it feels a bit like a stopgap, a stalling measure, as nothing is really resolved and only more questions are raised. It also stops sort of abruptly in an odd place. End result being that this is probably where I get off.

In a reverse of the above situation, the eighth Solo Leveling novel shockingly appears to be the series’ conclusion despite the wiki listing thirteen novels.

Weirdly enough the central conflict is resolved in the first few chapters with the rest devoted to an assortment of epilogue stories. It’s very strangely structured, sort of like they just lifted it wholesale from piecemeal webnovel form without any editing, but yet still somehow works for the most part. Assuming this actually is the end I’d classify the work as a pretty solid overpowered protagonist series with a slightly weak endgame.

  • So I’m a Spider, So What? #15-16

Posted on July 20, 2023 12:30 am by Offkorn Comment

The last two Kumodesuga books were originally released a mere month apart, a release schedule the English translations unfortunately did not share.

The fifteenth and penultimate novel is mostly exposition to set the stage and get the reincarnations up to speed… so I can certainly see why the author didn’t want to have a months-long wait between it and the series’ conclusion. Taken together both novels wrap everything up well enough without much in the way to complain about besides a rather arbitrary ending to the climatic battle and some fairly half-hearted character epilogues.

When all is said and done I think the best part of this series ends up being the middle segment, after the Spider and Demon Lord start traveling together and before they launch the war against humanity. Which is to say, roughly, volumes 6 through 10.

  • The Elder Scrolls -ONLINE-

Posted on June 29, 2023 3:46 pm by Offkorn Comment

Picked this game up on a whim a little over a week ago after seeing it mentioned a new expansion was just released and noticing it had no monthly fees.

The good news, for fans of the series anyway, is it plays exactly like a single-player Elder Scrolls game. The quests you can pick up are on par with those games as well rather than the expected ‘go here and kill/collect x’, a significant number of them with actual roleplaying choices.

The bad news is that since it doesn’t have a mandatory monthly fee, it’s completely inundated with microtransactions. You’ll be rather frequently pressured to buy things like lootboxes and quality of life upgrades (like extra build slots, more inventory space, or portable shops) with real money. The small silver lining there is that the game’s optional monthly fee (ESO+) gives you an equivalent amount of premium currency to spend on that stuff in addition to its normal benefits.

Speaking of, I strongly suggest grabbing at least one month’s worth of ESO+ if you end up enjoying the start of the game. There’s one main reason for this: The Crafting Bag. This provides infinite storage for all crafting materials. It will be absolutely necessary until you’ve gotten enough money to expand your inventory and bank space a decent amount. Access to all optional DLC is certainly nice, but not necessary at the start (once you’ve gotten to max loot drop level it’s a different story however).

Aside from that, new players should also pick up the two free DLC immediately (Imperial City and Armory) and place the Armory item in your starter apartment. This item, if used correctly, will provide free character resets (which normally cost thousands of gold). While you only get two slots by default (getting more requires paying real money), that’s enough to make the first slot a ‘blank’ one with no skills/attributes learned while the second one can be whatever. I’d personally suggest a dedicated crafting build.

Assuming you picked up the full game rather than just the ‘basic’ version (and you should’ve, since it costs more to upgrade later) another good thing to immediately do is pick up the Excavation skill and join the Psijic Order. The former because that’s the only way to get Mythic items and you’ll want to start leveling it immediately, and the latter because it will both help with leveling Excavation and grants access to the various Psijic caches scattered about (you should pick up the Thieves’ Guild skill line as well, if you decided to grab ESO+, for a similar reason).

So. That’s all the fun stuff out of the way. Now the issues, of which for me at least there are mainly two:

    • 1) The player trading system is garbage. You need a third party tool/website to find anything, and you can’t sell anything unless you’re in a player-run guild (with at least 50 people) who’s paid to have a merchant spot somewhere.
    • 2) Researching traits for crafting takes forever. We’re talking days once you get to the fourth trait or so… presumably so they can sell more research boost microtransactions.

  • FINAL FANTASY VII: REMAKE

Posted on June 14, 2023 1:27 pm by Offkorn Comment

Originally I had wanted to play this game when it first came out, but it was console-exclusive for a while and I haven’t played on one of those since the PS2 era. Then I sort of forgot about it while waiting for the PC port until suddenly remembering it last month.

The game starts out quite good but somewhat quickly runs into a rather severe issue: Fate Ghosts. They’re terrible. They accomplish nothing beyond degrading the story and character behavior, so I guess the devs just really wanted a big set-piece endgame fight to go out on and couldn’t think of a better way to implement it.

I wasn’t particularly thrilled by the combat system either. If you’re going to do real-time battles you should not force people to switch between characters during those battles in order to hit enemies’ weaknesses (or force you to use abilities for multiple characters concurrently for that matter). It’s just a giant pain in the ass and I was already tired of it by the fourth chapter.

Normally this would be where I’d say that I won’t bother playing the next game in the series… but since the ghosts will presumably be absent it may just end up tolerable. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
