  • Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force

Posted on March 23, 2023 2:41 pm by Offkorn Comment

I bought this game sometime last year for… whatever reason… and only got to playing it earlier this year. While it was okayish at first, by the time things opened up with a full party of characters I’d mostly lost interest. And by this point it seems pretty clear I won’t be going back to it.

Basically, what it reminded me most of (despite having a different combat system and little romance) was the Agarest War series. An inferior Agarest whose character interactions, amazingly enough, somehow come across as cringier than the fanservice in that game. Visually it’s also notably lacking with a bizarre mecha-like aesthetic that’s applied rather inconsistently. I guess it’s supposed to be a post-apocalyptic setting?

Those issues of course could be forgiven if the gameplay were engaging; it’s not. It is in fact rather boring with not much in the way of either enemy or attack variety. A problem only compounded by the grind necessary to collect ingredient items or quest targets.

So yeah, this is not a game I can recommended in any respect. Just go play Agarest 2 or the Neptunia games instead. They do the same sorts of thing better.

  • Solo Leveling #7 & Banished from the HERO’s PARTY #8

Posted on March 22, 2023 2:24 pm by Offkorn Comment

There’s a great deal going on in the seventh Solo Leveling novel.

We get the (apparently) full backstory on the war between the Rulers and Monarchs, why it’s happening on Earth, why the Shadow Monarch’s position has been so ambiguous, and why Jinwoo was chosen. The conclusion of his father’s arc is also included along with a small bit of romantic development. Most notable however is that this book features the dissolution of the titular leveling system… an ambitious thing to do considering there’s still five left to go.

As for Shin no Nakama‘s eighth entry, it’s basically reinforced all my earlier misgivings about the series. There’s just something particularly unnatural about the event development that makes it a bit of a chore to read. So yeah, I’ll be dropping the series here.

  • The Eminence in Shadow #1-3

Posted on March 19, 2023 3:25 pm by Offkorn Comment

I had originally decided to skip the Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! novels, as the premise sounded incredibly dumb. The Anime adaptation however ended up being good enough that I figured I’d check them out after all to see if any notable content was skipped.

Turns out the Anime is actually more fleshed out than the novels. There are a handful of things mentioned in them that it skips, but for the most part the novels are almost like a summary in comparison. Still, in a vacuum though I’d say the first two at least are worth reading if you like Overlord-y works… the third however is a different story.

The third doubles-down on the protagonist’s bizarre blindness to Shadow Garden’s activities to the point of contempt. Gamma literally had no issue giving him all their money earlier, yet he becomes fixated on scrounging for pocket change and just ignoring their accomplishments wholesale. It’s vaguely sickening.

So anyway, if you have a choice between the novels or Anime, stick with the latter since it’s the more refined of the two.

  • I PARRY EVERYTHING & The Holy Grail of Eris

Posted on March 16, 2023 2:30 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Ore wa Subete o “Parry” suru: Gyaku Kanchigai no Sekai Saikyou wa Boukensha ni Naritai series reminds me a bit of One Punch Man, featuring as it does a protagonist who became ludicrously strong after having trained too hard. That’s the only real similarity though; their personalities are completely different and the comedic focus here is on a cavalcade of misunderstandings and poor communication skills rather than parodying battle shounen tropes.

Eris no Seihai meanwhile starts off with a compounded version of that standard ‘girl gets framed by the person stealing her fiancé’ trope: The classic variety which happened in the past (and resulted in the production of the ghost half of the protagonist duo) and a modified version that serves as a spark for the main heroine. The problem with this novel is that it’s extraordinarily scattershot… it has no idea what it wants to be. A romance? A comedy? A thriller? A mystery? All sorts of elements clash against one another here in a particularly unpleasant manner.

  • My INSTANT DEATH ABILITY IS SO OVERPOWERED, NO ONE IN THIS OTHER WORLD STANDS A CHANCE AGAINST ME! #1-13

Posted on March 16, 2023 5:07 am by Offkorn Comment

This is a series that resembles Hatarakitakunai Dungeon Master in both its dark comedy aspects and having a main character whose ‘weakness’ is often wanting to sleep. Key differences would be a far lesser amount of fanservice (with no weird or creepy fetish focus) and much more haphazard/arbitrary event developments.

What’s somewhat interesting about it is that the protagonist does not gain his powers from being summoned, but rather he’s the very concept of entropy in human form who just so happens to get caught up in a mass summoning event. So while structurally an isekai, it’s more about how all these ridiculously powerful beings in this fantasy world (who have all let their power corrupt them into malicious assholes) just get instantly deleted when they offhandedly try to kill him.

You can’t really get much variety from that setup though, so the author compensates by spending a great deal of time focusing on the actions of those soon-to-be-dead enemies and side characters. As such you’ll get the story of so-and-so which builds up to them encountering the protagonist and summarily dropping dead (sometimes however it focuses on completely unrelated characters; the hero that fails to kill Lain toward the beginning stands out in particular for never showing up again). Which works for the most part.

The main issue is the previously mentioned haphazard nature of the event development, to the point where the author even inserted a New Game+ type of ‘it was all a dream’ reset in the eleventh volume. Apparently this was done because he was told to stretch the story out longer… which does not do it any favors, especially if the upcoming fourteenth novel truly does end up being the series’ conclusion. I just don’t see how all the random subplots introduced by that reset can be resolved with only book left.

  • Green Gryphon & Obsidian Queen #4-5

Posted on March 13, 2023 1:52 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first book in JS Kennedy‘s Mackenzie Green series shares some remarkable similarities with Ilona Andrews‘ first Kate Daniels novel. A key difference which prevents me from wanting to follow it any further though is that (what appears to be) the main love interest is arrogant in all the worst ways.

Shari L. Tapscott‘s last two Obsidian Queen novels (Creatures of Midnight & Queen of Aparia) manage to both resolve the love triangle, albeit in a rather overly convenient manner, and pretty much wrap up every loose end from earlier… also in a rather overly convenient manner. Not sure what I was expecting really, but to have basically everyone instantly accept the new status quo doesn’t feel quite right. Kind of anticlimactic with a somewhat rushed epilogue.

  • Eleventh CYCLE

Posted on March 10, 2023 7:07 am by Offkorn Comment

The first of Kian N. Ardalan‘s Mistland novels, Eleventh Cycle is large-scale dark fantasy in the vein of series like R. Scott Bakker‘s Prince of Nothing and Glen Cook’s Black Company which takes quite a bit of inspiration from the Dark Souls family of video games.

For most of the first half however it’s ‘merely’ dark fantasy. Despite having a content warning in the Foreword the atmosphere is remarkably aspirational with the protagonists gaining more than they lose. Only near that halfway point (roughly equivalent to where a normal-sized novel would end) do events become quite grim indeed as everything starts coming tumbling down.

This result is mirrored by in-universe stories, implying that building something up only to tear it down may become a running theme. An unfortunate development for me if so, since while I like seeing the seemingly broken characters overcome their struggles I do not like the foreboding that comes along with expecting them to be re-broken once more afterward.

  • Final Fantasy XIV – Sixth through Eighth Characters

Posted on March 5, 2023 7:17 am by Offkorn Comment

First off, let me just get it out of the way that I do not ever recommend anyone creating more than five characters tops. Honestly, since the Data Center travel function got implemented there’s not really much reason to go higher than four (one for each location cluster). So then why did I create eight? Boredom. Completionism. OCD. Take your pick.

The first of the ‘tertiary’ characters (who will stop advancing the main quest just after unlocking Purple Crafting scripts) was created on the Oceanian DC cluster primarily because I wanted to see just how poor a ‘poor’ server connection was. As it so happens it’s not all that bad at all. I wouldn’t want to play Samurai or bleeding-edge savage raids on it, but generally it’s only really noticeable in how little time you have to react to telegraphed AoE attacks.

Aside from that the only things to be aware of are that Alliance Raid roulette is pretty dead most of the time (good luck getting anything other than Crystal Tower to fire), Shadowbringers 8-man raids take quite some time to fire, Frontlines only has a brief 1-hour window starting from about 2:30pm AWST time, and activity in general falls off a cliff around 8pm.

The next was created in response to the addition of a fourth North American data center. Nothing much to say about this besides that the population seems to be too low to support frequent Alliance raids (or Frontlines at all). That’s not much of an issue though since you can quickly jump to one of the other three to do those.

Finally we come to my first Japanese DC character (and eighth overall). I chose Elemental as the starting point since it was formally the ‘English-friendly’ one pre-Oceanian cluster… and that may have been a mistake. I was hoping for something a bit different in atmosphere or playstyle but there really isn’t much.

The only things that stick out at this point are:

    1. You’ll occasionally get Frontlines ‘leaders’ who spam multiple sound effects every second
    2. No one uses Alliance chat in Alliance roulette
    3. Most people greet and sign-off with auto-translate phrases
    4. I have yet to come across people having a public conversation in a city center
    5. Tanks in 4-man roulettes seem more conservative with their pulls

Potential future characters (once I get that eighth one up to the start of Endwalker):

    • Normal Elf: White Mage (gnb/drg/bard/???)
    • Hroth 1: Paladin (blm, mnk, mch, ast)
    • Hroth 2: Black Mage (rpr, drk, sage, dnc)
    • Black Lizard: Bard (arc, drk, rpr)
    • Sun Cat: Samurai (arc, drk, dnc)
    • Tan Viera: Sage (pal, mnk, dnc, rdm)

  • Dahlia in Bloom #6 & Enough with This Slow Life! I WAS REINCARNATED AS A HIGH ELF AND NOW I’M BORED

Posted on March 3, 2023 2:00 pm by Offkorn Comment

The sixth Madougushi Dahlia novel immediately gets (some of) the food rhapsodizing out of the way to introduce a semi-dramatic plotline focusing on making a particularly complex tool for her best friend. It also both closes up the loose ends with her ex-fiancé and puts the the seemingly slow romantic development in perspective; only about four months have passed since the start of the series.

The lengthily-titled Tensei shite High Elf ni Narimashita ga, Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita is a bit misleading in its description. He does not actually abandon living a slow life, just slightly alters the magnitude of how slow it is; he has no trouble spending decades advancing his hobbies (blacksmithing, swordfighting, eating, and finally magic).

While it in general reminds of Kino no Tabi (with an actually powerful protagonist who can drive change), the timescale ends up the defining feature with this first book covering roughly thirty years. And I certainly hope it continues at that scale if for no other reason than the apparently impending introduction of a child character.

  • GATE OF MYTH AND POWER #1-2 & Obsidian Queen #1-3

Posted on February 24, 2023 4:37 am by Offkorn Comment

The King’s Captive and The King’s Shadow are the first two books in K. M. Shea‘s Gate of Myth and Power trilogy, a part of her larger Magiford Supernatural City universe. They remind me of a cross between the Hollows series and Fukushuu o Chikatta Shironeko wa Ryuuou no Hiza no Ue de Damin o Musaboru.

Fortunately, even not having read any of her previous books in the setting, these are easy to follow despite including quite a number of references to those earlier works. The characters are fun, the developments are entertaining enough, and the romance surprisingly does not come across as forced. Definitely interested in seeing how the trilogy concludes… but I’m not sure I’ll bother with any of the related trilogies.

Shari L. Tapscott‘s first three Obsidian Queen novels (Guild of Secrets, Princess of Shadows, & Knights of Obsidian) are interesting primarily due to the protagonist’s personality.

Generally in urban fantasy and/or paranormal romance the lead is either a scrappy underdog or ‘boringly’ average; these books however feature a high society heiress-type. The romantic (and other) developments are what you’d expect for the genre though, so if the novelty of a non-standard protagonist doesn’t grab you there won’t be much point in reading past the first entry.
