  • APPARENTLY, Disillusioned ADVENTURERS will Save the World #2 & The Disowned Queen’s: Consulting Detective Agency

Posted on February 23, 2023 1:52 pm by Offkorn Comment

The second Ningen Fushin book ends up pretty heavily idol-centric, ultimately revealing where that influence came from: The setting is actually a post-apocalyptic Earth. There’s a gambling focus as well, but it’s mainly all about Nick’s issues. We’ll see how the third book goes… but if the idol content doesn’t drastically decrease I’m going to have to drop it.

Speaking of dropping things, I won’t be following Kandou sareta node Tanteiya Hajimemasu! past its first installment. The characters and romance are okayish for the most part (her living family are all scum), but the genealogy is sketchy (If she’s her grandmother’s blood relative, why is her father written as if he married into the family? If she was adopted by her grandmother, how can she have the imperial bloodline?) and I honestly just can’t stand the ‘Phantom Thief’ trope.

  • The Death Mage & Death’s DAUGHTER and the Ebony BLADE #3

Posted on February 19, 2023 12:57 am by Offkorn Comment

Somewhat uncommon for a betrayed->strongest type of isekai, Yondome wa Iya na Shizokusei Majutsushi has the protagonist get screwed over more by passive neglect than active malice (though there certainly is some active malice in there from his past lives). Apart from that there’s not much to say about it other than his abilities are a bit too broadly defined and not particularly well thought out.

The third Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo book turned out to, against expectations, pretty much follow the lead of the previous two in being primarily combat focused (although in this case we get a look at a third army). It’s just as good as they are. What’s most interesting though is that in the Afterword the author mentions this should roughly be the halfway point… meaning they have an actual plan to conclude the story relatively soon.

  • Bloom into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka #3 & The Unwanted Undead Adventurer #1-4

Posted on February 11, 2023 10:38 pm by Offkorn Comment

A spinoff from the Yagate Kimi ni Naru series, Saeki Sayaka ni Tsuite follows the life of the title character from elementary school (before the events of that series) through college (after them). I mainly decided to pick up the third of its three novels due to greatly enjoying the Anime adaptation and wanting to see a bit of how the story ended.

Weirdly, Yuu and Touko’s relationship doesn’t seem any different from how it was there… which may explain why the Anime stopped where it did rather than finish the work. As for Sayaka, she’s much the same as well (as is the general atmosphere of the novel). The problem ends up being her love interest; she’s rather childish and their relationship doesn’t feel even the slightest bit natural. Perhaps they were trying to mirror the parent series romance? Whatever the case, the end result doesn’t quite work.

Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha is an inaccurately titled fantasy series (he is the exact opposite of ‘unwanted’) heavy on exposition and not much else. Unlike Tensura, which talks about something before/after it happens, and Youjo Senki, which repeatedly rephrases ideas, this series constantly says the same thing the same way… sometimes with a mere paragraph between repetitions.

The author (via the protagonist) is incredibly long-winded and frankly it’s just exhausting. Other issues would be the ill-fitting gamified dungeons (there are no skills, levels, or other game-like elements in the setting) and the way said protagonist seems to get dumber/more immature every time he evolves.

  • Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter #1-4 & Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World #5

Posted on February 9, 2023 8:21 am by Offkorn Comment

The Koujo Denka no Kateikyoushi series is a romantic comedy which, at the start at least, has a clear main couple. The other girls’ (most of whom are lolicon-bait) advances merely amount to harmless crushes, and the protagonist himself shows no romantic interest in them.

The problem is with the fourth book where one of them appears to get propped up on the same level as the main love interest. Normally I would just write this off as a fluke, but in the Afterword the author clearly states the other girls are meant to be legitimate competitors… an incredibly alarming declaration. So alarming that I’m not sure I want to continue reading any further despite how much I enjoy the dialogue style and worldbuilding.

The sixth TRPG Player novel (which serves as the fifth volume) wraps up a few loose ends from the previous ones before setting off an a new adventure wholly focusing on Erich and Agrippina.

Despite a centipede-girl being on the cover (she’s eventually introduced toward the end as an antagonist/potential future love interest), this book is pretty much all about Agrippina; even the short story at the end centers on her. It’s a bold decision that ends up paying off well.

  • Fushi no Kami #7 & The Apothecary Diaries

Posted on February 4, 2023 3:33 pm by Offkorn Comment

To my great surprise, the seventh Fushi no Kami novel turned out to be the series’ conclusion.

This was surprising mainly because half is devoted to talking in circles, a quarter is devoted to creating a hamfisted solution to the love triangle issue, and then the actual conclusion is handled by two abrupt 2-year time skips. Like… nothing gets resolved. The only potential silver-lining (if it can even be called that) is that I definitely would’ve dropped it here. Meaning I now don’t have to worry about missing anything or it potentially getting better.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto starts out with what could be seen as a self-contained novel. It’s got an established beginning, end, and plenty of development in-between. Sure it sometimes comes across more like a collection of short stories, but that’s not necessarily a negative. Honestly, it’s everything I had hoped the Koukyuu no Karasu Anime would’ve been like.

That said… I’m conflicted on whether or not to continue. I enjoyed it, yet honestly can’t see it ending up anywhere good if the additional volume summaries are to be believed. Guess I’ll take a ‘wait and see’ approach.

  • Rebuild World & I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage

Posted on February 2, 2023 1:01 am by Offkorn Comment

The Alluring Specter & Crazy, Reckless, and Rash are the first two books in the Rebuild World series, which uses an unconventional numbering scheme in addition to the rarity of having individual titles for each novel.

Basically they chart the path of a street urchin on his way to becoming an established mercenary as he’s guided by an AI with unknown (though almost certainly nefarious) goals through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It’s hard sci-fi for the most part with hints of potential romance/harem elements down the line and nothing much to complain about.

The first Moto Saikyou no Kenshi wa Isekai Mahou ni Akogareru book meanwhile is a more common example of a fantasy-to-fantasy overpowered protagonist reincarnation isekai. Said protagonist is overpowered thanks to retaining god-level swordsmanship from his previous life, while the isekai label appears to just be there to provide an excuse for in-character exposition about the setting.

Although nothing to write home about, it doesn’t have any glaring issues and should be entertaining enough for fans of the genre.

  • The IDEAL SPONGER LIFE #1-8

Posted on January 31, 2023 6:22 am by Offkorn Comment

Starting off as an isekai romance, Risou no Himo Seikatsu eventually becomes more focused on introducing modern conveniences to a fantasy world (this is the first time I’ve seen someone bring a hydroelectric power generator with them across worlds) and political pseudo-drama.

The romance becomes more of a background thing which only comes to the forefront when the topic of concubines is broached. In a manner similar to Arifureta, the protagonist here is staunchly monogamous despite those around him trying to force a harem… only to slowly give in to the outside pressure as time goes on.

The first four books are solely focused on his wife, while the next four introduce and effectively lock in the girl who’ll become his second. Presumably books nine through twelve will continue the theme with the new covergirl but… well, my first impression of her is far from a good one and I’m honestly not looking forward to any amount of focus devoted there.

So I think I’ll wait for that twelfth novel to be released before considering whether to continue any further.

  • SKELETON KNIGHT in ANOTHER WORLD #1-8

Posted on January 28, 2023 1:37 pm by Offkorn Comment

Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechuu was originally an 8-volume series that ended up being continued roughly a year later. Personally, I’m content with that original slightly open-ended conclusion and won’t be following it any further.

The books are at their core a pretty standard overpowered protagonist isekai, which isn’t an inherently bad thing, with a couple noteworthy traits (the oddly subdued romance and lack of any harem elements being the main ones). The characters are all pretty likable and it does a great job with the pacing, a particularly laudable accomplishment considering the barely acceptable pagecount.

Issues would be the noted small size of most of the volumes (based on the second Afterword, the author is apparently one of those who feels readers are inconvenienced by having more to read), the spontaneous cooking subfocus that pops up in the fifth and sixth novels, and the persistent use of the term ‘wagging’ to describe the catgirl’s tail movement (which may just be a translation issue). Although I guess you could also consider the lack of direct romantic development a problem as well.

The sixth Shinja Zero no Megami-sama book continues on from the previous in much the same way. The protagonist gains another, albeit limited, ability (tied to his weapon) while additional harem candidates are introduced. Far better pacing however.

Kasei Madoushi’s fourth novel also continues directly from where its predecessor left off. Difference here being that it’s concluding an arc rather than starting one. Unlike the previous novels, this one focuses more on action/drama for most of its pagetime with only the last third or so featuring a notable amount of ‘housekeeping’. Only noteworthy issue is some odd recap placement: For some reason a character who you’ve just spent half the book with gets re-introduced as if you’ve never seen her before.

  • BERSERK: OF GLUTTONY #1-4 & The GM has LOGGED IN to ANOTHER WORLD

Posted on January 26, 2023 2:05 am by Offkorn Comment

Like a lot of series that focus on leveling systems, Boushoku no Berserk has an issue with stat inflation and balancing in general. This is even despite the author’s inclusion of a reset mechanic… because for ~some reason~ that same mechanic is tied to a weapon which requires exponentially more stats to unlock higher evolutions.

Still, the first three books manage to keep things under control for the most part and end up entertaining enough. The fourth however just has a parade of issues: Random guys stronger than the divine dragon just hanging out in the city the entire time, Myne’s baffling character assassination, the way Memil ends up being treated despite being an unambiguous victim, and the author apparently forgetting both that gluttony devours souls and that anyone with E-level stats is supposed to be immune to the paralyzing gaze of those with higher stats then themselves.

Just a total mess I have no interest in following any further.

GM ga Isekai ni Login Shimashita. on the other hand doesn’t need to worry about balancing since it’s an overpowered protagonist series with a literally invincible lead. Said protagonist’s personality is odd in that while he’s altruistic, he’s also a bit of a sociopath that isn’t phased by dismembering people… and has the bizarrely nonsensical belief that actual slavery is somehow beneficial (for the slave) when compared to modern-day wage slavery.

Strange personality aside, the rather abrupt/half-assed romance elements are the only other issue. Seems likely this will turn into an ‘ever-growing harem’ type of thing with little actual thought put into the relationship dynamic.
