  • The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #1-6

Posted on October 10, 2022 9:28 am by Offkorn Comment

Based on the cover of the first Kuitsume Youhei no Gensou Kitan novel, you might expect to find a variation of Berserk‘s main character as its protagonist… and those expectations would be fulfilled. This series is basically pre-demon invasion Guts if he happened to live in Goblin Slayer‘s setting.

It is not obsessed with goblins however, so each novel (so far) features a different sort of antagonist ranging from undead, to slimes, to fae. What binds everything together are three ongoing background plots: The evolving relationship between the two main characters, the periodic appearance of unsealed dark gods, and the mystery behind Loren’s abilities/training.

It’s a lot of fun, mainly thanks to the interplay of the characters’ personalities. Only thing I can complain about is the localization. This is a series that would’ve greatly benefited from leaving the honorifics alone instead of trying to translate them; each “Mr. Loren” causes physical pain.

  • Reincarnated as a sword #1-10

Posted on October 7, 2022 11:39 am by Offkorn Comment

My first impression was that the Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita books were a joke series like Smartphone. I only ended up giving it a chance because I saw it mentioned positively somewhere else (I thought it was in Hell Mode‘s afterword, but after doublechecking that doesn’t seem to be the case).

Turns out it’s a mix of power fantasy and battle shounen elements that takes after Tensura in a number of ways, and while the beginning is a little rough, it starts picking up around the 4th novel (which also happens to be the peak of the inevitable cooking subtheme) and stays remarkably engaging up through the 7th. There are still issues of course (such as the protagonist being something of a halfwit)… but it’s definitely good enough as a time waster.

Unfortunately that all changes in the 8th novel and beyond, which perhaps not incidentally is where the first cliffhanger shows up.

The battles lose their sense of balance, with the protagonist suddenly struggling against C-class threats when they themselves are supposedly A-rank in power. Then an S-class threat shows up and gets stomped… only for more S-class beings to show up and suddenly be ~shockingly~ powerful. There’s also far, far too much exposition. Just a complete deluge of villain monologues and random backstory.

The 10th novel at first looked like it was getting back on track post-repairs, only to make it abundantly clear that the author has completely lost their grasp on the world’s mechanics. Fran and the sword became even more powerful than they were earlier (when they were fighting S-class threats), yet struggle and nearly die against an enemy that’s weaker than one they faced back toward the beginning of the series.

Nope, sorry, but I don’t see any way out of this recursively unbalanced power level situation.

  • Hell Mode #1-4

Posted on October 1, 2022 8:08 am by Offkorn Comment

Originally I was planning on skipping the Hell Mode (English subtitle: The Hardcore Gamer Dominates in Another World with Garbage Balancing) novels since there was no indication the story was anything other than your standard harem-ish power fantasy… and I can’t remember why I ended up giving it a chance.

Regardless, the first book turns out to be nothing of the sort. It’s actually a pretty damn good story about a guy who really loves doing mindlessly repetitive tasks in order to watch his stats go up (sort of similar in theme to Solo Leveling) and I ended up enjoying it even despite the fact that I’m actively opposed to his playstyle. The second book then isn’t much different beyond giving a brief nod near the end toward the meaning of the subtitle.

The third though… the third is a problem. Those who’ve read the TenSura novels may recall that at a certain point gamified dudgeon-delving was introduced out of nowhere. The same thing happens here. The protagonist also reverts to his pre-reincarnation personality and start spouting game terminology all the time which then gets incorporated into the other characters’ dialog. It’s real bad.

Which brings us to the fourth book, which changes locations once more to put the action on the front lines of the war. It’s here the series becomes a full-fledged power fantasy with all that entails. Just absolutely ridiculous numbers being thrown around to the point you have to wonder where exactly it can go from here. To be honest though I don’t really mind that. What I do mind is that there’s every indication the fifth book will go back to focusing on that dungeon-clearing bullshit and that the world will become increasingly gamified. So I don’t think I’ll be following the series any further.

As an aside, I’m not sure why LN authors have a tendency to apologize in the afterword whenever they write a normal-length book: “I’m terribly sorry for giving you your money’s worth!”. Like, seriously, what the hell?

The only bad thing I can say about Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo wa Shikkoku no Ken o Mune ni Idaku is that its pacing comes across as rather rushed. Aside from that it’s an enjoyable, often bloody, power fantasy of the kind you see fairly frequently nowadays (its main defining feature being the cheerfully amoral female protagonist).

On the other hand I can’t really praise much about Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei. It starts off with a pretty heavy-handed reference to MobSeka, and that sets the tone for what follows. Which is to say a sequence of events and character actions with little attachment to cause and effect. Despite that it still ends up kind of fun as a guilty pleasure… right up until the last chapter of the second book, where it does that frequent Anime series thing of suddenly becoming a completely different sort of story out of nowhere.

Neta Character Tensei toka Anmari da! (English subtitle: Advent of the Wyrm) is an odd book in that both its synopsis and title are extremely misleading. This is very much a bait-and-switch… though one for the better I’d say. Instead of following around an awkward genderswapped gamer, you get treated to the whims of a manic pixie dragongirl (who was formerly some guy’s roleplay character) as she explores the new world she’s found herself in while decimating any who oppose her.

It does, however, have what’s likely to be a fatal flaw: The child she makes into a soulbound servant for ~reasons~ is being positioned to become the primary love interest. And this isn’t “an adult in the body of child” mind you, but an actual child. Needless to say that’s going to be a deal-killer for quite a few people, myself included the moment it passes beyond ‘misunderstandings’ and innuendo.

Ihoujin, Dungeon ni Moguru is also misleading, but for a different reason (the title is accurate enough). What we have here appears to be a slice of life cooking shounen disguised with elements of GATE and DanMachi. It really does seem like most LN authors are just failed restauranteurs at this point.

Oddly enough, the side characters and worldbuilding are almost interesting/entertaining enough to offset the unexpected focus. In the end the problem mainly comes down to the protagonist’s incredibly inconsistent characterization. The author can’t seem to decide if he should be an awkward teenager in over his head or a mature, hyper-competent former mercenary… which results in his personality flip-flopping between the two seemingly at random. It’s just plain tiresome.

  • FAILURE FRAME #1-2

Posted on September 23, 2022 2:23 pm by Offkorn Comment

So, despite heavy misgivings, I went and picked up the first two novels in Kaoru Shinozaki’s Hazure Waku series (which has an overly-descriptive subtitle I don’t care enough to transcribe). Sadly, those initial suspicions ended up well-founded.

Something of a cross between Arifureta and Tsukimichi (minus the harem elements) it unfortunately suffers from three keys flaws:

    1) The author has zero experience regarding game systems; you cannot have zombie dragons and mud golems getting paralyzed for example, let alone dying to poison. It’s completely unbelievable.
    2) Most characters, and not just the students, are all terrible for no other reason than to be terrible. Their interactions with one another are also horrifically cringey.
    3) There’s quite a bit of gratuitous ecchi in here, which is often coupled with the terrible personalities mentioned above.

Reading this series is a constant ordeal to suspend your disbelief while wading through random bursts of meaningless cruelty and misogyny, one which does not appear to have even a single worthwhile trait to offset it.

  • Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire ♀ #1-6

Posted on September 20, 2022 4:28 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first thing to note about this series is that the English title is quite off the mark (the original title uses ‘martial arts’). There is very little sword-fighting in here, with the protagonist instead specializing in unarmed combat and energy blasts, so I have no idea why it was changed to something so ill-fitting. Makes me wonder what else was changed.

The next is that like in Tanya not much is made of his being a girl now. After the initial shock and occasional misgivings (usually used as comic relief) he doesn’t much care and ends up with an attitude similar to Kendeshi‘s protagonist in that he enjoys looking at his own reflection.

And the last is that the series takes something of a nose-dive in the fifth volume (which is significantly shorter than previous ones) and doesn’t recover much in the sixth. These two really should have been cut down into a single novel with most of the dragon-meat-related content excised. Now this deterioration could be attributed to the events mentioned in the Afterword, and I sincerely hope that ends up being the case… but I guess we’ll have to see how the seventh turns out.

  • Solo Leveling #1-5

Posted on September 18, 2022 11:36 am by Offkorn Comment

Another series I picked up on Amazon’s recommendation, Chugong’s Solo Leveling turned out to be an amazingly top-tier power fantasy.

That’s not to say it’s without issue though, as there are a few notable ones. Well, only one serious one; the protagonist is occasionally extraordinarily dumb. This is more of an issue in the first book before he comes into his power, but even later on he’ll occasionally slip into a caricature of a teenage gambling fanatic.

Lesser issues, the first of which I perhaps should have expected considering the title, are the Progress Quest-levels of obsession regarding ‘making number go up’, haphazard method of introducing (and discarding) potential love interests, and visual similarity between some of the key characters’ names.

So far at least it has both lived up to its title while steadily expanding a background mythology that brings to mind Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari‘s. So I’m definitely interested in seeing how events develop in its second half despite being a bit worried about how totally the power level structure has collapsed.

  • My Quiet Blacksmith Life in Another World #1-3

Posted on September 17, 2022 1:42 pm by Offkorn Comment

Picked up this series based on Amazon’s recommendation system (something I haven’t done in ages) and it, perhaps unsurprisingly, turned out to be rather similar to Shin no Nakama in general atmosphere.

This switches between laid-back everyday content and more dramatic action-focused fare as that does (though the ratio here is weighted far more heavily toward the everyday), although many of the other key traits are different. There’s no central love interest here for instance, nor really any romance-related content at all beyond occasional superficial teasing… which is quite impressive considering the steadily expanding cast of ‘family members’.

It also gets much more technical with the actual blacksmith-related activities than that work does with its herbalism. If the thought of reading pages upon pages about spreading straw ash about, hammering out imperfections in the metal, assembling furniture, or proper katana-crafting techniques fills you with dread this may not be the series for you. If you happen to read light novels for their penchant of having food-related subthemes however, then this will not disappoint.

Overall the books ended up a fun diversion that I plan to keep following since there don’t look to be any particularly damning red flags on the horizon. Character personalities are entertaining and fairly varied, no cringy fanservice (beside the general inexplicable harem setup), and it seems unlikely to abandon the smithing angle. Could do with a few less self-references to his ‘cheat’ abilities though.

After the previous October Daye entry, things were looking up for the protagonist. So I suppose it shouldn’t be much of a surprise that McGuire’s follow-up is particularly brutal. There is definitely more lost than gained here, and ending on a cliffhanger (which I don’t recall any of the previous novels doing) does it absolutely no favors. Even the short story at the end is pretty downbeat, covering as it does exactly how the sea witch ended up bound.

The sixth Hidden Legacy novel meanwhile continues the trend of the previous in no longer feeling like Kate Daniels fanfiction. It’s legitimately come into its own at this point… albeit as a fairly standard (if perhaps a bit action-heavy) paranormal romance series. This one marks the end of Catalina’s stint as protagonist, and if the hints at the end are any indication the youngest sister will be the focus of the next book.
