Brought to the city in order to expand her horizons, a young foxgirl named Yuzu begins working at a hot springs inn. The opportunity allows her to meet many different kinds of people, from the slightly eccentric staff to a variety of travelers just passing though.

A slice of life with threads of personal drama, along with some yuri romance, which alternates between comedic and poignant.

Every twelve years the Twelve Tournament is held to grant one lone survivor any single wish they desire. This year marks the 12th such tournament and once again twelve warriors, each one in alignment with an animal from the Chinese zodiac, face off in a deadly battle royal.

A philosophical monologue-heavy character drama that spends roughly half its time on flashbacks revealing the characters’ pasts/personalities, and half on detailing the development of the current conflict from various angles.

It’s just another normal weekend in Tokyo’s Harajuku district for the PARK shopgirls Rito, Mari, and Kotoko… or at least it was before aliens suddenly invaded and began stealing the Earth’s cultural landmarks. Now it’s up to them to stop the invasion from claiming Harajuku as well, with the help of an alien defector in possession of imagination-based tools of great power.

This starts out as a mix of slice of life and action with undercurrents of personal drama. At the halfway point however the dramatic aspects take over completely to turn it into a very different series for a time.

An action-centric 3DCG crossover series featuring characters from Gatchaman, Hurricane Polymar, Tekkaman, and Casshern. You do not need to know anything about those various franchises to follow it.

Ever since he first saw her Haruka Shinozaki has had a crush on Akiho Kousaka, who appears perfect in every way. In the 2nd year of high school he works up the courage to confess to her, and is ecstatic when she accepts… at first. It quickly becomes apparent however that her personality is a bit odd and that having a normal relationship will be quite a challenge.

A heavy-ecchi romantic comedy centered on dirty jokes which features a wide variety of perverted behavior. In addition to its standard harem attributes it also contains some yuri and yaoi content.

  • UQ HOLDER!: Mahou Sensei Negima! 2

Posted on December 20, 2017 2:37 pm by Offkorn Comment

Saved from the brink of death by the ancient vampire Evangeline McDowell, Touta Konoe is told that his parents died in a car accident. His life continues as normal for a time until one day an assassin attacks Evangeline, now going by the name Yukihime, and the truth of his newfound power and immortality is revealed.

An action-comedy centered on graphic combat between immortals that briefly dips into harem comedy toward the end before finishing as a battle shounen. As indicated by the title, this is a sequel to Mahou Sensei Negima! and features prominent callbacks to it. While for the most part it can be watched as a stand-alone, having seen that series first will help.

Highschool student Tatara Fujita finds himself adrift in life, not knowing what he wants to do nor who he wants to be. This all changes one morning when he meets Kaname Sengoku and gets introduced to the world of competitive ballroom dancing.

A sparsely-animated sports shounen with several uncommon aspects, including the art style and a focus on both dancing and its female characters.

Long controlled by an ancient group of monks known as the Unification League, Gesshou Haku has never had any freedom and is expected to marry a youkai to complete plans 500 years in the making. Not wanting any part of it he escapes their grasp… only to find himself tangled up with a young fox spirit’s assignment to re-unite two past lovers.

An action-comedy with various romantic subplots and a few bits of reincarnation-related drama. Note that it’s an alternate version of the ongoing Chinese web series Hu Yao Xiao Hong Niang (covering the first 48 episodes).

Dissatisfied with her life and job, Moriko Morioka becomes a NEET and retreats into the world of the MMORPG Fruits de Mer. There she meets Yuuta Sakurai, a successful businessman who feels most comfortable interacting with people online, and the two strike up a friendship.

A romantic comedy focused on social awkwardness that splits its time between the real world and a virtual fantasy world.

  • Assorted Procedurals and Dramas

Another group of non-Anime shows recently watched on a whim:

    • House M.D.: Yeah, Sherlock Holmes in a hospital is an apt description. So it’s not surprising that, as with Sherlock, the banter ends up the best part of the show. The dramatic aspects (particularly the crime-related ones) don’t work anywhere near as well… which ends up becoming a serious problem when it begins to place a much larger focus on them. The end of the 4th season marks the turning point and I wouldn’t suggest watching beyond the 5th unless you don’t mind skipping through large swathes of melodrama to reach the intermittent good bits.
    • The Unusuals: Tries too hard to be quirky and ends up blatantly artificial. Still often amusing in its ludicrousness though, and does manage to strike a more believable balance as it progresses.
    • Once Upon a Time: A mix of fantasy and urban fantasy that would’ve been better without the kid. I like the way it interweaves the various story-worlds together, but that’s about it.
    • Once Upon a Time in Wonderland: While heavier on the fantasy aspects, it has the exact same feel as the parent series.
    • Stalker: Like a stalker Inception or something. Stalkers everywhere. It’s actually pretty interesting, albeit incredibly creepy.
    • Designated Survivor: Exciting, but it could do without the family issues angle. The spontaneous roadblocks/escalations early-on also tend to come across as forced.
    • The Good Wife: Features a solid mix of drama, thriller-like suspense, and situational comedy (both low-key and exaggerated) with a fantastic cast. The main flaws would be an unfortunate fondness for dramatic zooms and lingering close-ups along with the seemingly neverending game of law firm musical chairs.
    • Rosewood: Eh. The smugness is kinda overwhelming and the lab segments come across like performance art.
    • Castle: The first episode has a number of serious structural and personality-based issues which are thankfully nowhere near as severe in later ones. Eventually it becomes a highly entertaining mix of drama and comic interludes with a dynamic very similar to Bones‘ (with a less believable romance angle). I strongly suggest skipping the last season however, as similar to House this show suffers when that balance gets upset and later seasons lean more and more toward drama.
    • CSI: Cyber: Incredibly staged. This kind of style might work for a campy gameshow; it’s a complete failure in a crime procedural.
    • Secrets and Lies: Nice atmosphere, but a couple key characters (including the detective) simply don’t work at all.
    • Murder in the First: Gritty. In a good way for the most part. Gets over-zealous with its messaging though.
    • Cracked: I don’t like the male protagonist at all. The level of crazy is also, perhaps unsurprisingly, very high.
