Heroes from alternate dimensions suddenly find themselves transported to modern-day Japan. There they meet a young girl named Emi Kaidou who has recently come into possession of a mysterious item which just may hold the key to restoring their worlds.

An action-centric 3DCG crossover series featuring characters from Gatchaman, Hurricane Polymar, Tekkaman, and Casshern. You do not need to know anything about those various franchises to follow it.

  • UQ HOLDER!: Mahou Sensei Negima! 2

Posted on December 20, 2017 2:37 pm by Offkorn Comment

Saved from the brink of death by the ancient vampire Evangeline McDowell, Touta Konoe is told that his parents died in a car accident. His life continues as normal for a time until one day an assassin attacks Evangeline, now going by the name Yukihime, and the truth of his newfound power and immortality is revealed.

An action-comedy centered on graphic combat between immortals that briefly dips into harem comedy toward the end before finishing as a battle shounen. As indicated by the title, this is a sequel to Mahou Sensei Negima! and features prominent callbacks to it. While for the most part it can be watched as a stand-alone, having seen that series first will help.

Long controlled by an ancient group of monks known as the Unification League, Gesshou Haku has never had any freedom and is expected to marry a youkai to complete plans 500 years in the making. Not wanting any part of it he escapes their grasp… only to find himself tangled up with a young fox spirit’s assignment to re-unite two past lovers.

An action-comedy with various romantic subplots and a few bits of reincarnation-related drama. Note that it’s an alternate version of the ongoing Chinese web series Hu Yao Xiao Hong Niang (covering the first 48 episodes).

  • Overlord

Posted on November 30, 2017 12:07 pm by Offkorn Comment

After an impressive 12-year run, the popular virtual reality MMORPG Yggdrasil has decided to shut its servers down. On the last day of operation, the leader of one of the game’s most powerful guilds decides to stay logged on to the very last second… only to find himself trapped in a gameworld which has taken on a life of its own. Seemingly the only remaining PC in a world full of former NPCs, he sets out with an army of minions to discover exactly what has happened.

An abridged version of the Overlord TV series that features a few new/extended scenes.

  • Semi-Random Shows

Posted on November 30, 2017 7:01 am by Offkorn Comment

Some recently watched non-Anime shows that were picked up for no particular reason:

    TV Shows

    • American Gods: Far too much edgy atmosphere and smoke machines masquerading as depth.
    • Daredevil: Apart from some of the action scenes dragging on too long, and some of them just looking ridiculous, this does a good job of balancing the investigative side with the crime-fighting side. The second season is less adept at this and goes too far overboard with the ninja army (it also comes dangerously close to goreporn territory).
    • The Punisher: A lot more varied than expected. That variety ends up being a flaw at first, with events feeling disconnected, but changes into a positive following the point those disparate elements begin interacting.
    • Jessica Jones: The overabundance of early-series sex scenes and flashbacks aside this is a decently engaging gritty drama with an impressively creepy villain.
    • Luke Cage: A very good street-level crime drama. However, The flashbacks are not integrated well and it sort of loses focus as it progresses.
    • Iron Fist: The early series suffers from the psychiatric ward angle, the mid-series corporate scenes feel artificial, and it just suffers in general from coming across like a Macbeth imitation. The martial arts sequences are pretty good though.
    • The Defenders: The ninja army bits are the weakest parts of Daredevil S2 and Iron Fist, and this is completely focused on them so….

    Movies

    • Doctor Strange: Most of the visual effects are pretty interesting (if occasionally overwhelming), but the transition from egotistical neurosurgeon to selfless sorcerer happens far too quickly.

  • Quanzhi Fashi II

Posted on November 26, 2017 1:32 pm by Offkorn Comment

Having publicly revealed his ability to wield two elements Fan Mo wins the right to enter the Magic Spring. But dark forces are gathering in the shadows, and using their own version of the Spring’s water to create ever more violent magic creatures.

Unlike the first season, this places a much heavier emphasis on the action and replaces the character-relationship drama with a more large scale antagonist.

After taking a nap while wearing a mysterious amulet, Fan Mo awakens to discover the world has become infused with magic… and everyone behaves as though that has always been the case. It’s been 3 months since then and now to pull his family out of poverty he’s trying to qualify for the Magic High School entrance exam in order to become a great magician, but can he really excel in a subject he’s only just learned about?

An action series peppered with reaction-based comic relief and small bits of character drama.

  • Sakigake!! Otoko Juku

Posted on November 25, 2017 2:50 pm by Offkorn Comment

Otoku Juku, a fabled institution that accepts dropouts from across Japan in order to turn them into the manliest of men. Its methods are extreme however and it more closely resembles a prison than a school.

Starts out as a comedy with minor action elements that parodies manly men stereotypes, eventually fully transforming into a serious action-drama by the halfway point.

  • Mozaika

Posted on November 24, 2017 5:32 pm by Offkorn Comment

It’s been 10 years since King Sazara began subjugating the people of Mozaika, even executing his loyal retainer U Dante when he spoke out against the sudden wave of tyranny. Now only the house of Azoron remains opposed to his conquest, while Dante’s son Taruma has set out on his own quest for vengeance.

    A fantasy-world action-drama with a moderate number of sci-fi elements.

  • Teizokurei DAYDREAM

Posted on November 24, 2017 1:13 pm by Offkorn Comment

Government-affiliated spiritualist by day and dominatrix by night, Misaki Saiki does not particularly enjoy either job and wishes for a more normal life. Something that seems forever out of reach due to both her albino appearance and ability to see ghosts.

A multi-genre series with a large amount of ecchi, occasionally bordering on the pornographic, distributed throughout. The comedy style is mostly reaction-based while the drama is on the darker side of the spectrum.
