  • The Realm Dungeon & IMMORTAL WAR

Posted on February 25, 2025 11:44 am by Offkorn Comment

The third Primer for the Apocalypse novel takes place entirely inside a dungeon that does not come across much like a dungeon at all. It’s not really any different from the action switching to a sequence of different planets, which is something that I’m thankful for. Quite a bit of time is covered as the protagonist advances from third all the way to eighth rank, with the main question being why she’s so set on advancing to the next realm without having spent much time in this one.

Like, there’s no guarantee the next realm is any better. It could easily be worse (like it is in the Shop of Souls series).

Beneath the Dragoneye Moons‘ fourteenth novel is a bit of a head-scratcher. The titular war only takes a day or two and the rest is the protagonist rebuilding her home… which she just did a couple books back. The apocalypse itself even gets handwaved away a few years later by a pair of ‘lifebringers’. What was the point of the pseudo-reset? To push Night off the stage? Why bring him back in the first place then? The whole production just comes across as completely arbitrary.

  • The Approach of Dawn, REBORN as the FIRST BOSS #3, & The OP Lich IS A RETURNEE #13

The second of Braided Sky‘s Primer for the Apocalypse novels is much like the first in that most of the action takes place in the real world while the game is basically an afterthought (which eventually disappears completely). The ending leaves things a little unclear as to whether it’s going to head in a Solo Leveling direction or not, but the journey’s so far been entertaining enough for me to stick around to see which way it goes.

Stuart Grosse‘s third Reborn First Boss novella focuses entirely on defending a town from a goblin attack. Unlike the earlier books there are no sexual scenes here, which is a very good sign for future developments.

Another of the above author’s series, the thirteenth Lich Returnee entry focuses on the expected seal unlocking, but also takes some time to give an update on the Yakuza Princess’ relationship situation. It’s surprising how much can be accomplished in a book a third the size of a standard paperback.

  • Primer for the Apocalypse & Awakening

The first of Braided Sky‘s Primer for the Apocalypse books is a bit of a bait and switch as there’s not actually much time spent in the game world at all. Most of the focus is in the physical world, split between family interactions and exploring real dungeons, and in the classrooms of a virtual academy. It’s okay so far, but the pacing is fairly slow and it’s a bit strange no one thinks to connect the protagonist’s exceptional Time affinity with her unusually fast growth rate.

I went into Hikaru Genji‘s first Son of the Hero King novel braced for a certain amount of perversion based on the cover alone. Yet, I still ended up completely blindsided that three of the first four chapters focused on detailing the protagonist’s sexual escapades with his maid and combat instructor. Frankly, I don’t think I’ve encountered something so antithetical to what I’m looking for in a story since Siren’s Song.
