  • Yuri!!!: Yuri on Ice

Posted on December 24, 2016 3:38 pm by Offkorn Comment

Yuri Katsuki has idolized the Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov since first sight. Wanting a chance to meet his idol on the same stage, he works his way up to the national level… only to perform badly and return home to contemplate whether or not he’s really cut out for figure skating after all.

The first half is a sports shounen focused on figure skating. Aside from the choice of sport itself, its other distinguishing features would be the mostly 20+ year old cast, having a particularly cartoony comedy style, and the large amount of yaoi subtext. In the second half the show becomes more mature, in all respects, and closer to a romantic drama.

The long reining national middle school ping-pong champions are dethroned in a surprise 1st-round upset by an unknown newcomer, who goes on to win the title. Inspired by this unexpected turn of events, the girls of Suzumegahara aim to accomplish that same feat with the help of a skilled transfer student.

A combination of sports shounen and moe schoolgirl comedy. It has the competitive spirit of the former with the visuals and yuri subtext of the latter.

  • Kaijuu Girls: Ultra Kaijuu Gijinka Keikaku

Posted on December 23, 2016 2:10 am by Offkorn Comment

The spirits of giant monsters have been reincarnated in the bodies of high school girls. Can the girls learn to harness their power and become full-fledged Kaijuu Girls?

A super-deformed comedy with transformation scenes done in the standard Anime style. It aims for earnest parody with an actual plotline instead of just stringing gags together.

  • Haikyuu!!: Karasuno Koukou vs Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koukou

Posted on December 22, 2016 1:19 pm by Offkorn Comment

Having reached the final qualifier match for the Nationals, Karasuno must now push themselves beyond their limits in order to defeat Shiratorizawa.

Continuing from where the second season left off, this one covers the single titular game between the two teams. While it’s the same mix of comedy and hot-blooded sports action as always there’s not much point in jumping into the series here, so if you haven’t yet seen the prequel(s) you should do so before attempting to watch this.

  • Monster Strike

Posted on December 22, 2016 6:23 am by Offkorn Comment

Ren Homura has just returned to his hometown after a lengthy absence with no memories of the place. After being forced to replace his smartphone after an accident, he finds himself caught up in a game where monsters are summoned to do battle against one another… a game which seems to be related to his lost memories.

For the most part this is not a serious show and plays just about everything for laughs with a random sense of humor; it’s only in the last quarter or so it becomes a full battle shounen. It’s also shorter than the episode count would suggest, as each is only ~7 minutes long. Episodes with longer runtimes are padded with advertisements for various things related to the game and Anime.

Some time after the events of the first series, a new enemy has launched a surprise attack on Sound Planet and caused mass destruction. With it already being too late to fight back, a trio of ninja resort to time travel to warn the populace and hopefully prevent the impending tragedy.

While you don’t have to watch the prequel to follow the new storyline, that is where most of the characters and their quirks are introduced and it may be a bit overwhelming to have them all appear at once. The two seasons aren’t much different, having the same style of comedy (situational) and a similar mix of music, everyday cheerful situations, and bursts of personal/relationship-based drama.

The private investigators of the Armed Detective Agency handle cases the police and military cannot, thanks to the unique powers at their disposal. They’re not the only ones with supernatural powers though and often find themselves facing off against those who direct their abilities toward more nefarious ends.

An action-comedy featuring a mix of character deformation and reaction-based humor peppered with periodic bursts of drama and mystery. It starts off slightly episodic, with each episode being focused on either a single case or a particular part of an ongoing case, eventually becoming plot driven with a greater focus on drama.

  • Saber Marionette J

Posted on December 1, 2016 10:47 am by Offkorn Comment

A colony ship has an accident in orbit over a remote planet and six men are the only survivors. Now, 300 years later, an all-male society consisting of six different countries has been established through the use of cloning technology. On this world with no women, androids called Marionettes have been fashioned in their likeness to fill various menial and combat roles. One morning a young man named Otaru accidentally awakens a powerful combat Marionette with the rare ability to feel and express human emotions, a fortunate development considering that one of the descendants of those six men has just begun a campaign of conquest.

While this show shares a few setting and character details with Saber Marionette R, in most respects it’s completely different. Rather than being a drama with little in the way of romantic elements, it’s instead a slapstick comedy featuring standard harem-style hijinks with only tertiary dramatic aspects.

Tomoya Aki is a well known otaku blogger who covers Anime, LNs, and VNs. One day he’s struck by the sight of a girl on a hill and becomes obsessed with the idea of creating his own VN based on that experience. He lacks the skills to do it on his own though and so sets out to recruit two old acquaintances (a doujin artist and a novelist), running into the mystery girl from before in the process. Can the four of them work together to create a game?

A fully self-aware romantic comedy whose first episode, labeled “Episode 0”, takes place at the very end of the series. Unlike many harem comedies this one focuses primarily on reaction and dialog-based humor instead of ecchi comedy. It does still have a notable amount of ecchi however.

  • Aikatsu!

    aikatsu_title

Ichigo is the daughter of a lunch-shop owner and has no particular interest in idols. One day her friend Aoi, an idol otaku, takes her to a concert held by the current top idol Mizuki. The experience changes her life, and it’s not long before the two girls enter the idol-focused Starlight Academy to become idols themselves. Can Ichigo manage to reach the same heights as Mizuki?

Aikatsu! is a lengthy series that paints the idol industry in a persistently upbeat light. Win or lose the girls are nearly always cheerful, and there is never any resentment or envy shown toward anyone. Each new season (apart from the last) shakes the cast up; the second season introduces a rival school with its own set of characters and the third replaces the original main cast while almost completely ignoring the other school’s existence. It’s also worth mentioning that the show is designed to promote an arcade game and so will occasionally come across like an advertisement.
