  • HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS #4 & I’m Quitting the Hero’s Party #12

Posted on January 7, 2026 5:04 am by Offkorn Comment

The fourth Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken novel has the protagonist going undercover once again to foreign lands in search of normal food only to get foiled by his own lack of assertiveness. It additionally kicks off the conflict against his teacher’s homeland, which should be the last major obstacle toward uniting the continent.

Yongsa Pati Ttaelyeochiubnida‘s twelfth entry lines up all the pieces for the final push against the various disasters, setting a six-month timeline to take out the first of them (while also revealing that the members of the original hero party were unimaginably stupid). To be honest, at this point I’m more than a little annoyed at how certain enemies keep reappearing… and if the next novel does not feature the Apostate’s complete excision from the story I may end up dropping it.

  • I’m Quitting the Hero’s Party #11 & The Wicked Princess and Her Twelve Eyes

Posted on December 9, 2025 4:12 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first half of the eleventh Yongsa Pati Ttaelyeochiubnida novel concludes the long-running Kyle/Raniel arc that began in the first (rather than the series as a whole). The second half then picks up after a 3-year timeskip to center on bringing the fight into the demon lord’s territory, with a greater focus on Raniel’s former students.

Aku no Reijou to Juuni no Hitomi (English subtitle: The Legendary Villainess and Her Elite Assassins) has a slightly misleading English title (she’s a duke’s daughter rather than a princess) and starts off with that standard villainess scenario of ‘crown prince fiancé getting stolen by a light magic user’. The twist here though is that there is no twist, with the villainess being actually villainous and wholly guilty of her crimes.

The actual twist is that she gets a second chance anyway and through the power of misunderstandings similar to those found in Monster no Niku (a work by the same author) becomes something resembling a good person. Although the first third is rough, it picks up nicely after that and remains entertaining up to the pair of endings, where a second twist comes out of nowhere.

  • Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint #2 & Who Killed the Hero?: Tale of the Prophecy

Posted on November 27, 2025 1:51 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Jeonjijeok Dokja Sijeom novel is a notable step down from the prequel. The pacing is far, far too frantic, the plot developments are pretty random, and the character actions are simplistic. I see no reason to go any further.

I had been wondering how there could possibly be a continuation of Dare ga Yuusha o Koroshita ka considering the way it ended, and the second novel being mostly a prequel turned out to be the answer. Focused on someone with a tangential relationship to the hero, this story hits many of the same beats while giving a bit of a wider view of what was happening in the world before the demon king fell. And while not quite as good as that first novel, it works well as a supplement.

  • WELCOME TO Olivia’s Magic Jewelers #2 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS #3

Posted on September 1, 2025 5:20 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Olivia Maseki Houshokuten e Youkoso novel is half awkward romance, as the love interest spontaneously decides to claw his way out of the friend zone, and half ridiculously forced drama. And then, adding insult to injury there’s actually more food porn than crafting content. It’s just plain bad.

Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken‘s third entry gets our protagonist within a stone’s throw of uniting the continent. Unintentionally of course. As this one doesn’t dwell as much on his internal monologue, it ends up consistently entertaining overall with my only compliant being the re-occurring obsession with eating good food. It’s been like a over a decade since he started eating monsters (and even before that he barely ate anything due to the poisoning attempts) so… why does he still wax rhapsodic about it?

  • WELCOME TO Olivia’s Magic Jewelers & Who Killed the Hero?

The first Olivia Maseki Houshokuten e Youkoso novel has some believability issues at the beginning and a somewhat rushed pace, yet still ends up decently entertaining overall. It resembles the Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru series a bit in setup with the core difference being that the protagonist here is ‘merely’ highly skilled instead of monstrously overpowered.

From the same author as Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken, Dare ga Yuusha o Koroshita ka is a completely different beast. Rather than focusing on the hero’s journey it instead focuses on the events leading up to it and the events after it, told from multiple different perspectives. A perfectly self-contained story that turned out to be remarkably well-made all around.

The second Ougon no Keikenchi novel moves away from the solo-play focus of the prequel to introduce some multiplayer elements to this MMO setting with the introduction of both an actual friend and the protagonist’s estranged sister. I’m not really sure at this junction where it’s intending to go, but so far it’s been entertaining enough.

The Monster no Niku series‘ second novel meanwhile is pretty much more of the same: The protagonist’s followers misunderstand his intentions/desires while his influence and power continue to grow unchecked. It still works well enough… though that may not be true for much longer. We’ll have to see if the epilogue events shake anything up or it just ends up a repeat of the first invasion.

  • The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #9 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS

After the disappointment of Kuitsume Youhei no Gensou Kitan’s eighth novel I wasn’t really expecting anything (besides further disappointment) from the follow-up. Fortunately though it turned out pretty decent and more or less on par with the earlier books. Guess I won’t be dropping the series just yet after all.

Picking up Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken on a whim, I ended up pleasantly surprised that it’s primarily a misunderstanding-based comedy somewhat in the vein of Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai. The protagonist here however isn’t a dissembling coward and it gets quite a bit more graphic in the combat department. That said, the beginning is pretty rough with how he basically gets brow-beaten into adopting his training regime and it doesn’t truly pick up until after he becomes king about a third of the way through.
