    ALMA’S DREAMS (ARE DEFAULT)

An eldritch-horror themed… thriller I suppose, this series has both an interesting setting and a fairly varied cast of layered characters. While the protagonist is a bit impulsive, her actions come across naturally rather than feeling forced or exaggerated.

    THE MOTHER OF MONSTERS

An overpowered-protagonist isekai with some small romance elements and eventual kingdom-building aspects, this story takes an unusual development path. It’s not as cut and dried as simply going from hero to villain, as the MC occupies a sort of middle-ground between the two concepts, but more a subtle shift across the alignment axis.

    Misadventures Incorporated

I ended up greatly enjoying the rewritten first book of the series, only to be crushingly disappointed by the original second book. Turns out the rewrite removed quite a few massively annoying elements which play large parts in the later event development. I’m also not really a fan of the fox-fairy and it seems like she becomes a major character.

    HEARTTHROB

A romance thriller taking place in a futuristic dystopia, this series has quite a few things going for it in the setting and character departments with both feeling well developed and ‘real’. Unfortunately (for me), the level of victimization is a bit too high for my taste.

    The Rise of Chaos <genesis>

Notable for being structured like a light novel, with occasional images appearing mid-chapter, the first book of this series is quite well done. Really, the only thing I can complain about is how it’s never explained why the protagonist awkwardly ignores her friend’s romantic advances despite being equally attracted. The second book though… the second book quickly takes all the goodwill of the first and leaves it dead in a ditch by effectively ret-conning the first’s conclusion and drastically changing the series genre.

    Daughter of Death

Unusual for having an unequivocally villainous protagonist, this series starts off well enough only to end up exceptionally contrived following the second meeting with the king. The level of plot armor just blasts through the roof and it becomes prohibitively difficult to justify the event developments.

    Mistress Of The Evil Forest

In retrospect, this comes across like an Anime-ified Mother of Monsters. The tropes were thick enough that I couldn’t get beyond the first chapter.

    Ethereal Ascendance

This reads like an overly-literal fan translation of a Japanese light novel.

    Exiled Realm

A work by the same author as Father of Monstrosity (focused more on psychological horror than physical horror), I tried pretty hard to like this series and in fact managed to make it to the second part of the second arc… where I had to give up when it spontaneously turned into a Mushishi fanfic. Other potential issues are the whole amnesia focus (though done differently here, it’s certainly not a popular trope), an overabundance of commas, and a curious absence of stats despite taking place in a game world.

  • A LICH IN TIME & FATHER OF MONSTROSITY

The fifth of HJ Tolson‘s Liches Get Stitches novels turned out to be the conclusion of the series. And while the pacing is a bit on the rushed side, for the most part it fulfills that role beautifully.

A work by the same author as Madman Apocalypse, Father of Monstrosity shares a similar focus on grotesquery and eldritch horror. This story is most definitely not a comedy however, instead being a mix of cold-blooded progression fantasy (minus any gaming aspects) and tragedy with small hints of potential romance that get ruthlessly snuffed out. It’s not a fun read, but it is an interesting one.

    DUNGEON OF KNOWLEDGE

A pretty entertaining high fantasy ensemble-based system progression story that suffers a bit from questionable character actions where the lost city is concerned. There are several times where high ranking or well-connected people learn about the dungeon/city under the town and just… do absolutely nothing with it. Characters are fun though so I’ll continue to follow it for the foreseeable future.

    MADMAN APOCALYPSE

A comedy-focused, and quite bloody, system apocalypse story notable for featuring insane protagonists. Once again the characters are the strong point here, as while the various antagonists are well thought out the setting aspects and plot developments are kind of arbitrary. Presumably on purpose… but still.

    An Assassin’s Anthem

Another high fantasy system progression story, this one is more a coming of age type of thing with a single protagonist. Still in the early chapters there are any number of directions it can end up going, but personally I hope it backs away from the weird instanced dungeon thing it’s been focused on recently.

    EDEN & ECHO

Notably different from the previous stories, this is a pure science fiction cyberpunkish… thriller? Procedural? Action-adventure? The developments so far are kind of hard to categorize, but it ~seems~ like it will focus primarily on the protagonist’s growth beyond her initial somewhat spoiled arrogance and naïve ideals.

    Reforged from Ruin

A revenge-focused progression fantasy with a(n eventually) notable romance subtheme, this story starts interesting and only gets better as the protagonist re-acquires and then surpasses their previous level of ability. That said, I don’t have much experience with cultivation stories and so can’t really say how much it deviates from (or plays around with) the expected stereotypes

    DRAKA

A character-driven isekai focused on a dragon and transmigrated human inhabiting the same body, first as distinct personalities and then later as a merged whole. Though centered on (often action-focused) character development there’s also a long-running plotline involving a hostile criminal syndicate.

    A CHRONICLE OF LIES

Although well-written with an interesting setting, I simply don’t like this story’s protagonist. He’s the type to build his entire identity around his disability, to the point that he literally goes insane after his schizophrenia is cured.

    Eclipse: Time Thief

The initial setup is a little odd and something about the dialog style just didn’t work for me.

    Horizon of War

Perhaps it’s because I began this series at the start of the second book, but neither the protagonist nor his allies (nor their situation) grabbed me. The protagonist in particular comes across as a generic easily embarrassed everyman. Maybe they’d be more interesting if followed from day one.

    THE BLACK LEAF COMPANY

Not thrilled with the dumb yet lucky protagonist.
