  • The IDEAL SPONGER LIFE #1-8

Posted on January 31, 2023 6:22 am by Offkorn Comment

Starting off as an isekai romance, Risou no Himo Seikatsu eventually becomes more focused on introducing modern conveniences to a fantasy world (this is the first time I’ve seen someone bring a hydroelectric power generator with them across worlds) and political pseudo-drama.

The romance becomes more of a background thing which only comes to the forefront when the topic of concubines is broached. In a manner similar to Arifureta, the protagonist here is staunchly monogamous despite those around him trying to force a harem… only to slowly give in to the outside pressure as time goes on.

The first four books are solely focused on his wife, while the next four introduce and effectively lock in the girl who’ll become his second. Presumably books nine through twelve will continue the theme with the new covergirl but… well, my first impression of her is far from a good one and I’m honestly not looking forward to any amount of focus devoted there.

So I think I’ll wait for that twelfth novel to be released before considering whether to continue any further.

  • SKELETON KNIGHT in ANOTHER WORLD #1-8

Posted on January 28, 2023 1:37 pm by Offkorn Comment

Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechuu was originally an 8-volume series that ended up being continued roughly a year later. Personally, I’m content with that original slightly open-ended conclusion and won’t be following it any further.

The books are at their core a pretty standard overpowered protagonist isekai, which isn’t an inherently bad thing, with a couple noteworthy traits (the oddly subdued romance and lack of any harem elements being the main ones). The characters are all pretty likable and it does a great job with the pacing, a particularly laudable accomplishment considering the barely acceptable pagecount.

Issues would be the noted small size of most of the volumes (based on the second Afterword, the author is apparently one of those who feels readers are inconvenienced by having more to read), the spontaneous cooking subfocus that pops up in the fifth and sixth novels, and the persistent use of the term ‘wagging’ to describe the catgirl’s tail movement (which may just be a translation issue). Although I guess you could also consider the lack of direct romantic development a problem as well.

  • Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers #6 & Housekeeping Mage from Another World #4

Posted on January 26, 2023 3:46 pm by Offkorn Comment

The sixth Shinja Zero no Megami-sama book continues on from the previous in much the same way. The protagonist gains another, albeit limited, ability (tied to his weapon) while additional harem candidates are introduced. Far better pacing however.

Kasei Madoushi’s fourth novel also continues directly from where its predecessor left off. Difference here being that it’s concluding an arc rather than starting one. Unlike the previous novels, this one focuses more on action/drama for most of its pagetime with only the last third or so featuring a notable amount of ‘housekeeping’. Only noteworthy issue is some odd recap placement: For some reason a character who you’ve just spent half the book with gets re-introduced as if you’ve never seen her before.

  • BERSERK: OF GLUTTONY #1-4 & The GM has LOGGED IN to ANOTHER WORLD

Posted on January 26, 2023 2:05 am by Offkorn Comment

Like a lot of series that focus on leveling systems, Boushoku no Berserk has an issue with stat inflation and balancing in general. This is even despite the author’s inclusion of a reset mechanic… because for ~some reason~ that same mechanic is tied to a weapon which requires exponentially more stats to unlock higher evolutions.

Still, the first three books manage to keep things under control for the most part and end up entertaining enough. The fourth however just has a parade of issues: Random guys stronger than the divine dragon just hanging out in the city the entire time, Myne’s baffling character assassination, the way Memil ends up being treated despite being an unambiguous victim, and the author apparently forgetting both that gluttony devours souls and that anyone with E-level stats is supposed to be immune to the paralyzing gaze of those with higher stats then themselves.

Just a total mess I have no interest in following any further.

GM ga Isekai ni Login Shimashita. on the other hand doesn’t need to worry about balancing since it’s an overpowered protagonist series with a literally invincible lead. Said protagonist’s personality is odd in that while he’s altruistic, he’s also a bit of a sociopath that isn’t phased by dismembering people… and has the bizarrely nonsensical belief that actual slavery is somehow beneficial (for the slave) when compared to modern-day wage slavery.

Strange personality aside, the rather abrupt/half-assed romance elements are the only other issue. Seems likely this will turn into an ‘ever-growing harem’ type of thing with little actual thought put into the relationship dynamic.

  • ROLL OVER AND DIE #1-4 & Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #2

The “Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omouna” to Yuusha Party o Tsuihou sareta node, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai series, which has a completely different English title, starts off incredibly similar to Shin no Nakama only to quickly diverge.

While as that focuses on slice of life events and romance (with interludes of action/drama), this instead mainly features gore-flinging violence and body horror (with slice of life and romantic interludes). And rather surprisingly, it does a pretty good job managing the balancing act through these first four novels. There only ends up being two issues: The first and less serious (since it only really applies to the first novel) is that the setting’s slavery implementation is little better than a plot device with basically no logic behind it.

The second, more serious issue, is the shoujo ai elements that piggyback off the central yuri relationship. There is not one, but two old woman <-> young girl pairings in here that advance very quickly in red flag-triggering directions.

Free Life Fantasy’s second novel meanwhile is basically more of the same content present in the first. Which is to say detailed cooking scenes take center stage with hemming and hawing over mechanic choices coming in second. Action and setting development then round things out as almost filler content. To give you an idea of just how important this series considers cooking to be: A fighting tournament is completely glossed over in favor of describing the preparation of some beef stew. Let the implications of that sink in for a bit.

And yet… it still ends up entertaining for the most part. Only real potential issue is that it looks like it may be going down the same road as Bofuri in piling overpowered abilities onto the protagonist.

  • the SAGA of TANYA THE EVIL #5-11

Posted on January 21, 2023 9:37 am by Offkorn Comment

Picking up some time after the movie‘s events (the Salamander group has already been formed and seen action), part of which were Anime-original, the fifth novel is a bit of an odd place to enter the series.

As things turn out, the ratio of dialog to action is surprisingly similar to Tensura‘s… right down to its conversational style which places an emphasis on repeatedly discussing events that have or are going to occur. The difference is that while there it does so from multiple points of view, here the preference is to focus on individual characters’ circuitous thought patterns.

And no lie: That can get extremely tiresome.

Fortunately, the seventh novel marks a bit of a turning point in the series’ structure. Much more time is devoted to the Empire’s internal issues and it morphs into a bit of a thriller. The stretch from the 8th through 11th then is basically a chronicle of the country’s last gasps and ends up remarkably gripping as certain people are forced to face a reality they had long been averting their eyes from.

So far we’ve seen the post-war survival of several key characters via flash-forwards, but the question of just what will happen to Tanya and her subordinates (who those characters do not mention) remains shrouded in uncertainty. Hopefully there won’t be too many more volumes to go to reach the end.

  • I’m in Love with the Villainess #1-2 & Chillin’ in Another World #8

Posted on January 14, 2023 2:07 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou. -Revolution- series starts off as a pretty standard otome game parody. Only odd thing being that the male characters don’t show much interest in the heroine (who’s aggressively pursuing the villainess). That first book is pretty heavily focused toward comedy, which works more often than not, the second… the second however swerves into pretty serious social justice-tinged drama and romance territory (while keeping the same style of comedy as a subtheme). It’s an odd mix that never manages to feel like a coherent whole.

The eighth Lv 2 kara Cheat novel basically stays the course charted by the previous seven. Everyone’s pretty much just hanging out and having a good time with no noteworthy conflicts in sight. Only thing worth pointing out I suppose is that the series isn’t shy about spreading the power around; the protagonist’s allies are plenty overpowered themselves. Oh, and I guess it is a bit odd that the number of side characters with harems keeps increasing.

Not sure how long I’ll keep following it though, as both the Belano/Minilio and Garyl/queen relationships look like they’ll be getting greater focus in the future.

  • Legend of KEEPERS

Posted on January 8, 2023 2:12 am by Offkorn Comment

I can’t remember when it is I actually bought this game, but I only just got around to playing it this week.

Generally speaking it’s similar in structure to Slay the Spire, as you progress down a series of choices before eventually reaching the final challenge of a run. Gameplay is quite different however since it’s not a card game. Instead, it’s more like classic turn-based RPGs with each enemy/ally being able to use one attack per turn.

The base game comes with three player archetypes (although two of them have to be unlocked) each with their own perk trees and preferred gameplay styles. The default Slavemaster archetype appears to favor direct damage to morale and health while the Enchantress is more focused on debuffs and damage over time. The Engineer meanwhile (which I haven’t unlocked yet) presumably focuses on enhancing the trap mechanic. In addition to those, you can also buy three additional archetypes as DLC. Not sure how they stack up to the starters since none looked particularly interesting to me.

General advice (when playing on Normal) would be to first focus on rewards that give new monsters until you have ~8-10 so you have a buffer for injury events or morale restoration, then switch to focusing on gold for training them all to higher levels. Manager upgrades are low priority for the most part since enemies should rarely reach the final area of a dungeon with a full lineup. Artifacts can be incredibly good… but they’re a crapshoot since what you get is totally random.

Overall an okay time waster, but there’s definitely an issue with repetition.

Posted on January 3, 2023 2:22 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Kasei Madoushi no Isekai Seikatsu series (English subtitle: Making Your Adventures Feel Like Home!) is an isekai romance featuring a protagonist lacking any world-breaking advantages. She is in fact at quite the disadvantage in many ways (the one exception being magical control, similar to Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s protagonist).

The books balance themselves between the mostly light-hearted present day relationship between the two leads and more serious flashbacks to their pasts… which can delve into some surprisingly heavy topics such as human trafficking and mental abuse. There is also of course quite a bit of ‘housekeeping magic’ on display, from the requisite cooking segments (and accompanying lectures on proper diets and flavor profiles) to the creation of baths and sleeping arrangements.

All-in-all a pretty solid series I plan to keep following. Sadly, I can’t say the same for Fukushuu o Chikatta Shironeko wa Ryuuou no Hiza no Ue de Damin o Musaboru (English subtitle: as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap).

As a romance-framed overpowered protagonist isekai, it’s as carefree and lighthearted as you might expect. The issue lies with said protagonist. Being both an airhead and something of a doormat besides she’ll occasionally make decisions that come across as face-palmingly idiotic. Not helping matters is that while she’s supposedly just started college, she reacts more like a middle-schooler.

The end result ends up infuriating just a bit too often to continue reading.

Posted on January 2, 2023 2:05 pm by Offkorn Comment

The main problem with Isekai Meikyuu no Saishinbu o Mezasou (English subtitle: Aim for the Deepest Level) is the protagonist. He’s pretty dumb, and despite having a special ability that makes him less dumb when that idiocy starts to threaten his existence… it never quite sticks. Just an incredibly unpleasant head to be stuck in.

Another series I can’t recommend picking up is Ansatsushadearu Ore no Status ga Yuusha yori mo Akiraka ni Tsuyoi nodaga. While the protagonist here isn’t intolerable, the work as a whole comes across like a half-baked Arifureta imitation. That wouldn’t even be so bad if it weren’t for the constant stream of incredibly arbitrary character and event developments that kicks off after he leaves the castle.

Maybe the author manages to discover the concept of cause & effect later, but this beginning is so atrocious I have no desire to find out.
