Similar to Ikinokori Renkinjutsushi wa Machi, the fifth Koushaku Reijou no Tashinami book marks the main storyline’s conclusion; later novels tell a prequel story focused on the protagonist’s mother.

The series begins with what I now have to assume is a common otome game setup: A prince’s fiancée is brought before him to answer for crimes against his girlfriend. This is the fourth time I’ve seen it now (Mobseka, Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou, & Kangoku Slow Life being the previous three) and so far each implementation has been slightly different.

From there it quickly transitions into an ‘introduce modern concepts to a fantasy world’ type of series before eventually dipping into conventional romantic developments.

Personally I’d have to say that the first three books are the best, with the fourth and fifth suffering from being a bit too laden with preachy monologues and overly convenient event developments. While it’s true the protagonist always had an abnormally easy time implementing her policies locally, the way she ends up effectively bulldozing through on a national level as well (without even trying to) heavily strains credulity.

Still, it’s a pretty fun series all in all. Just don’t expect much in the way of believable conflict.

While Ikinokori Renkinjutsushi wa Machi de Shizuka ni Kurashitai (English subtitle: Now Dreams of a Quiet City Life) is actually a six-book series, the main storyline is concluded in the fifth. As far as I can tell the sixth, which I’ve decided to skip, is sort of like a DLC bonus story.

Part ‘crafting’ slice of life and part ‘cute girl being cute’, it nevertheless manages to continually advance its central plotline while also tossing in small bits of romantic yearnings. I’ve also got to give the author credit for not giving in to the temptation of including cooking segments, thereby keeping potion and medicine-making at the forefront.

As far as complaints, my main one would have to be how long-winded and/or repetitious the descriptive text often is. More minor issues would be the penchant for ominously foreshadowing ultimately innocuous events along with there being some editing issues in the fifth novel.

The 17-book Zettai ni Hatarakitakunai Dungeon Master ga Damin o Musaboru made series brings to mind several others: Tensai Ouji no Akaji Kokka Saisei Jutsu (the protagonist’s attempts to abdicate responsibility constantly backfiring), No Game No Life (the comedy, fanservice, and to a lesser extent strategic aspects), and Overlord (the nonhuman subordinates and occasional dips into bloody ruthlessness).

While it starts off shaky due to all the problematic aspects (slavery, rape, potential loli love interest), that first novel’s contents are not indicative of (most of) the rest of the series. Only the slavery aspect remains a central theme, and it both has a plausible justification and isn’t used as a source of fanservice. The series is first and foremost a comedy and it absolutely delivers on that front with only the sixth (gets pretty dark), seventh (heavy trap and brainwash content), and fifteenth (the foot fetish returns with a vengeance) novels containing notably drop-worthy red flags.

That said, it does take a bit of a dive in the fourteenth volume and doesn’t really recover its earlier energy until about halfway through the sixteenth. Not sure what it is exactly but the events in that period just come across as forced/half-assed. To be honest, had I not been aware that there were only a few more books to go I probably would’ve dropped it at that point.

And I’m glad I stuck it out because the ending ends up pretty damn good all things considered, even managing to tie in the differences from the web novel version.

  • PRISON LIFE is EASY for a Villainess & Grimgar #3

Posted on December 27, 2022 11:10 am by Offkorn Comment

The two-book series Konyaku Haki kara Hajimaru Akuyaku Reijou no Kangoku Slow Life is a masterwork of reaction comedy. Just a constant stream of glorious absurdity centered on a particularly charismatic psychopath which I would love to see animated one day (as admittedly unlikely as that is). My one and only complaint is that it goes much too far overboard with the yandere character.

The third Grimgar novel picks up right from where the Anime adaptation left off. And while I certainly liked that, what worked in a visual format doesn’t do so hot as text alone.

The main problem here is the same as that plaguing the Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e novels; the protagonist’s cringey inner monologue. Both adaptations downplay/eliminate that aspect and end up far better for it, and so as with that series I have to recommended avoiding these novels at all costs if you happened to enjoy the Anime.

  • The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles & Adelheid #1-2

Posted on December 25, 2022 2:16 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan series apparently spans thirteen novels, but only the first of them appears to have been translated into English so far.

Simply speaking its a standard overpowered-protagonist isekai with above average world building and a mostly solid cast of characters. The main issue lies with that previous ‘mostly’. One character in particular is pretty terrible and, unfortunately, it just so happens to be the protagonist; he’s dumb. Really dumb. So dumb I almost stopped reading partway though on multiple occasions. And considering this is already his second time being summoned I have little hope he ever gets any better later in the series.

The Seventh Princess and The Reginnaglar Ceremony are the first two books in D.C. Haenlien‘s Adelheid series. A work they claim is a “Western Portal Fantasy”… which is either a shameless lie or an indicator of extreme ignorance.

What the series is, is a Japanese reincarnation isekai right down to the inexplicable cooking subfocus (explicitly featuring Japanese cuisine no less). There’s nothing ‘western’ about it and I strongly suspect ‘portal fantasy’ is just a nonsensical rebranding of the term isekai.

The author’s questionable attribution practices aside the novels themselves are in fact quite good. Solid world building, a varied cast of characters, and more or less believable event developments (on par with most ‘modern day conveniences get introduced to a fantasy world’ stories anyway). Only real issues at this point are some minor editing mistakes, the aforementioned inexplicable food focus, and the possibility that the modern day convenience angle gets too far out of hand.

  • Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court #1-2 & Banished from the Hero’s Party #7

Posted on December 24, 2022 1:45 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Futsutsuka na Akujo dewa Gozaimasu ga series (subtitle: Suuguu Chouso Torikae Den) is a remarkably entertaining ‘walk a mile in another’s shoes’ type of story with a few minor romance elements.

The main plotline is resolved in just the first two novels (which were apparently originally all there was), but it seems poised to continue on into a more romance-heavy form that will presumably focus on the recently formed love triangle. Personally, I don’t really see any possible ‘good ending’ here unless they somehow rope Keigetsu into it and all four of them share via the bodyswap spell. Which would fit the setting but… I’m just not very interested in watching it happen.

The seventh Shin no Nakama novel meanwhile finishes up the arc started in the previous entry. Honestly, at this point I’m not really sure what to say about it with the way events seem to resolve themselves just as quickly as they suddenly appear.

While I wouldn’t say I actively dislike it, there’s something off-putting about the structure that nags at me while reading. I’ll probably end up dropping it if the eighth book doesn’t change things up.

  • Demon Princess magical Chaos & APPARENTLY, Disillusioned ADVENTURERS will Save the World

Posted on December 23, 2022 12:15 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first book in the Demon Princess Magical Chaos series (The Tentacle Awakens) resembles both Kumodesuga and Neta Character Tensei. The protagonist is sort of like the former’s (which is good) while her ‘main’ love interest is sort of like the latter’s (which is bad).

Awkward/creepy sexual elements aside though the book’s main issues are how erratic the protagonist’s personality is and incredibly contrived the event developments are. It requires some significant suspension of disbelief to get into, and doesn’t really have any noteworthy traits to justify that investment.

Ningen Fushin no Boukensha-tachi ga Sekai o Sukuu Youdesu (English subtitle: The Ultimate Party Is Born) meanwhile resembles Grimgar a bit in setting and characters, although it’s much more irreverent and not an isekai story. That second part ends up important as a result of the inexplicable modern-day idol industry subplot. Why was that included? Are reincarnations/isekai’d travelers going be introduced down the line? Just bizarre.

Apart from the ill-fitting idol elements the only other complaint I can really level is that the protagonists’ backstories are a bit too melodramatic. It really hammers home how unjustifiably screwed they all were almost to the point of parody… which may have been the point. Guess we’ll see how the upcoming second novel goes.

  • In the Land of Leadale #7 & Reborn to Master the Blade #7

Posted on December 15, 2022 3:46 am by Offkorn Comment

I can no longer chalk up the consistently disjointed character interactions in the seventh Leadale novel to simple technical mistakes. At this point I’m convinced that the Anime adaptation just had particularly good scriptwriters. Regardless, I’ll be dropping the series here since in addition to that the length leaves much to be desired (and the unchecked growth of the recap section is fairly alarming as well).

Joining the above on the dropped pile, the seventh Bu o Kiwameru Tame Tenseisu novel is even shorter. Adding insult to injury, it also happens to end mid conversation. As if that weren’t bad enough, the author goes on in the Afterword about how they ‘have so much more to write’ and ‘think it’s best to be writing multiple series concurrently’. You can’t even finish an arc in this one! It’s just plain insulting.

  • CAST IN ETERNITY & Solo Leveling #6

Posted on December 14, 2022 12:28 am by Offkorn Comment

Michelle Sagara‘s follow-up to Cast in Conflict decides to greatly expand the backstory on a previously minor side character. While initially this seems like a baffling decision, it eventually pays off with the introduction of several new ancient entities. As a plus, the level of metaphysical technobabble manages to stay on the restrained side of things.

The sixth Solo Leveling novel picks up right from where the last left off and centers itself around combat. Both with magical beasts and even some hunters. Basically, this book appears to mark the turning point between focusing on dungeons and focusing on particularly strong individual enemies.

  • Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start With Magical Tools #1-5

Posted on December 12, 2022 11:22 am by Offkorn Comment

Madougushi Dahlia wa Utsumukanai turned out to be a fairly entertaining pseudo-Cinderella story.

It splits its time between relationship development, both with the central couple and assorted side characters, and occasionally technical crafting segments not too dissimilar from Kajiya de Hajimeru‘s. Which is to say it classifies cooking as a crafting discipline.

No joke, at least 30% or so of each novel is food and drink-related with the main saving grace being that they are not pagecount-starved. So you still get quite a bit of magical tool making, amusing character interactions, business development, and class-based anxiety.

Only real potential issue with it is how the two leads doggedly insist on considering themselves ‘just friends’ despite being a couple in every way that matters… though personally I kind of find that refreshing.
