  • Fushi no Kami: Rebuilding Civilization Starts with a Village #1-6

Posted on December 10, 2022 11:26 pm by Offkorn Comment

On the surface, Fushi no Kami is your standard ‘person with knowledge of advanced tech finds themselves in a low tech world’ type of story.

As it progresses however it turns out it’s not quite that simple. For one thing, rather than from modern-day Earth, the protagonist appears to have been reincarnated from an advanced nanomachine using society. For another this isn’t a generic fantasy world, but rather a post-apocalyptic one with mostly exhausted natural resources (no fossil fuels, metals and even stone are relatively rare). It’s also not quite a pure kingdom building story, as there’s both a significant romance subtheme and a re-occurring plotline hinting that there’s far more to the protagonist than mere memories from a past life.

Character-wise it also shakes things up a bit by having neither of the two romantic leads fit into a particular gender stereotype: Maika has the attributes of both a cute girl being cute and a hardened, bloodthirsty swordsmaster. Ash the traits of both a charismatic leader of men and somewhat ditzy airhead when it comes to interpersonal relations. The dynamic works shockingly well and even extends to the various side characters who get paired up over time.

So I’ll definitely be continuing to follow this series to see whether or not the author can stick the landing.

A surprisingly good series that doesn’t overly resemble anything else (that I’ve seen/read, apart from its use of common genre tropes like gamified dungeons), Seija Musou remains consistent through its first seven volumes. Character interactions are entertaining, there’s no weird fanservice, and the world-building is solid.

Only real issues would be the introduction of a ‘slaves want to stay slaves’ trope (which fortunately, eventually, gets resolved) and the protagonist’s oddly strenuous objections to revealing himself as a reincarnation in a world where reincarnations aren’t exactly rare.

The eighth novel is a bit of a different story though. That’s where the forward momentum kind of dies out and event developments start to take on a sort of episodic and random/arbitrary feel. A feeling which persists through the ninth and tenth novels as well. I wouldn’t go so far as to say this segment of the series is bad, but it’s definitely disappointing and doesn’t engender much hope for a proper conclusion.

  • Chillin’ in Another World with LV 2 Super CHEAT POWERS #1-7

Posted on December 9, 2022 11:22 am by Offkorn Comment

As you might expect from the title, Lv 2 kara Cheat datta Motoyuusha Kouho no Mattari Isekai Life is for the most part a comedy… although it also has quite a bit of romance (both regular romance and romantic comedy). I would say it’s something like a cross between Shin no Nakama and Tensura without any of the drama.

Two main things stand out. The first is that the protagonist has been summoned from a similar fantasy world rather than Earth (so there’s no culture bulldozing or tech saviorism), and the second is that the central romance is a monogamous relationship established almost immediately (with whiplash-inducing speed). So then what about all the various side characters? The series does quite a bit of matchmaking resulting in a wide variety of different relationships.

Which brings us to two red flags: The rather frequent comedic sexualization of an adolescent dragongirl, and the way demon and half-demon children apparently age in dog years.

  • The World’s Fastest Level Up #1-2 & The Magician Who Rose From Failure #5

Posted on December 5, 2022 10:52 am by Offkorn Comment

The only way I can describe Sekai Saisoku no Level Up is: A knockoff Solo Leveling. Just about every aspect of these first two books is done better in that series. The only exceptions being that this has more fanservice and they both have equally ill-defined power levels.

Seriously, just go read (or re-read) that instead.

In other news, the fifth Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou! novel is something of an intermission. It mostly concerns itself with cleaning up the aftermath of Book 4‘s insurrection and positioning the protagonist to receive far more notoriety than he may be able to handle from various other countries which may or may not get explored in more detail down the line.

So it basically stays the course.

  • Isekai Tensei: RECRUITED TO ANOTHER WORLD #1-2 & Oversummoned, Overpowered, AND OVER IT! #1-2

Posted on December 2, 2022 11:21 am by Offkorn Comment

Although filled to the brim with tropes of all sorts, the first Isekai Tensei no Boukensha novel starts out pretty good and manages to stay moderately engaging for quite some time. Unfortunately, the last part is a total mess. Just ludicrous development after ludicrous development crammed into far too small a space.

Still, bad endings/cliffhangers are basically par for the course. So I decided to continue on into the second novel and… it turned out okay, I guess? There’s some issues with repetitive prose and ill-defined power levels but it’s readable enough. The problem lies in the roadmap (based on the web version) the author lays out in the Afterword; future events do not sound particularly interesting. So at this point I’m on the fence as to whether or not to keep following it.

The Meccha Shoukan sareta Ken series meanwhile is a completely different beast. The English title evokes something a bit goofy, but it’s only lighthearted in the same way Overlord or Goblin Slayer is. Which is to say the silly parts are there to make the fairly dark/heavy content go down easier.

The protagonist of this series is an odd flavor of sociopath in that while most of the time he doesn’t care what others think, as something of a hobby he enjoys actively making people dislike/hate him. So unlike the protagonist of Overlord, who has fun playing the villain, the one here goes all-out in being a villain… when he can be bothered to do anything at all. Which brings us to the second oddity: The overpowered protagonist is only overpowered at night. During the day he’s weaker than most normal humans and would like nothing more than to sleep or just laze about.

It’s a curious mix of elements and I’m definitely interested in seeing where it goes.

  • Did I Seriously Just Get Reincarnated as My Gag Character?! #2 & That Time I Got Reincarnated as a SLIME #15

Posted on November 27, 2022 3:25 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Neta Character Tensei toka Anmari da! volume (“The Labyrinth of Memory”) really hammers home how much I dislike Aisha; a main romantic interest who looks/acts like a child, claims to be an adult, and is ambiguously aged for plausible deniability. Just incredibly distasteful all-around and unlike the first book, there’s nothing really here to offset that. Worse, if the Afterword is to be believed, the next novel will focus on her even more. So I think this will be where I get off.

The follow-up to the cliffhanger at the end of Tensura’s 14th installment begins by turning back time to see how things fell apart from various other perspectives… which ends up being a fairly annoying thing to do since it doesn’t really add anything.

Once it starts moving forward though it does so quite smoothly, laying everything out in a remarkably efficient manner considering the shear mass of characters we’re dealing with here. My fears that this would be a repeat of his demon lord awakening sequence thankfully went unrealized and instead you get just peak overpowered steamrolling. Which makes sense since you never actually got to see him fight after having evolved so many of his subordinates.

The Afterword also answered my earlier question as to why there were so many more volumes to go despite the original web novel not appearing to have much remaining content: The LNs have apparently diverged enough by this point to become their own story.

So all-in-all a fairly satisfying installment, and I’m looking forward to seeing where exactly the author intends to take this version.

  • Min-Maxing My TRPG Build In Another World #1-4 Canto II

Posted on November 27, 2022 3:00 am by Offkorn Comment

TRPG Player ga Isekai Saikyou Build o Mezasu (English subtitle: Preach the Good Word of Mr. Henderson) is a series in the vein of Hell Mode, just minus the grind obsession and with more focus on harem/romance elements.

Two things are odd about it: The first is that the alleged main heroine gets almost immediately disappeared in the second book, and the second is that the fifth book is labeled as Part 2 of the fourth instead of as its own volume… despite being larger. Very strange labeling scheme.

Oddities aside it’s a remarkably engaging series with fun characters and relatively few issues. Those issues being that said main heroine is exceptionally small of stature (giving a distinct pro-lolicon vibe despite how vehemently anti-lolicon the rest of the content is), a similar localization issue as Kuitsume Youhei (I would love to know what mental gymnastics justified using “Mr. Brother” as a valid form of address), and the protagonist’s penchant for thinking of this world as a game despite having spent nearly a decade in it already (e.g. yelling at imaginary game masters for bad balancing).

Pretty minor issues all-in-all, and the ‘alternate path’ short stories at the end of each novel are a really cool idea.

  • Full Clearing Another World under a Goddess with Zero Believers #5 & Death’s DAUGHTER and the Ebony BLADE #2

Posted on November 16, 2022 11:11 am by Offkorn Comment

Although the fifth Shinja Zero no Megami-sama book (Dragon Menace of Macallen) mainly concerns itself with developing the harem, it also somehow manages to squeeze in not one but two boss fights (needless to say the pacing suffers a bit from this). So quite a bit happens here, though nothing particularly surprising or alarming… beyond of course the hints that the harem will grow even further.

The second Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo book also doesn’t do anything surprising. There are no sudden left turns here and if you liked the first book there’s no reason you shouldn’t like this one as well since the structure and general content is pretty much identical.

There’s some indication the next book will be a departure however that focuses on city life and Olivia’s search for Z/her past, along with hints of possible drama revolving around Ashton (who’s background may be more complicated than he lets on).

It’s been some time since I last saw Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka?. So long that I actually forgot it was incomplete and based on an LN series.

While that adaptation apparently ends partway through the third book, I figured I’d make things easy and just jump right to the fourth… and did not end up regretting that decision. Aside from a slight time gap (which presumably contains the details of Chtholly’s final battle), going from the end of there to the beginning of Book 4 is pretty smooth sailing.

While at the time I’d wondered why they never bothered adapting the full work considering how relatively short it is, after reading through this conclusion the reason becomes clear: The story of the first three books is one of a tragic romance. The full story however is one more focused on Willem, the Beasts, the Visitors, and the general concept of ‘loss of home’. The Anime ends where Chtholly’s story does, while the fourth and fifth books conclude Willem’s.

    They’re real good.

  • Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- & The Magician Who Rose From Failure: Tales of War and Magic #1-4

Posted on October 23, 2022 9:51 am by Offkorn Comment

Free Life Fantasy Online turned out to be quite similar to Bofuri. Main differences are a significant cooking subfocus and how the protagonist here is an experienced gamer who deliberately seeks out an eccentric character build. There’s also a pretty big focus on explaining/expositing upon the game design which I honestly could do without.

If the Afterword is any indication though, I doubt the series will get any less technical as it progresses. Seems the author actually wanted to be a game dev and decided that writing a novel was the best way to realize that dream.

The Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou! books on the other hand don’t remind me of any one particular series, but rather several; Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, Ansatsu Kizoku, and Knight’s & Magic. Almost no romance elements here though, at least not yet (the stage is set for a potential love triangle-slash-harem down the line however).

What’s most interesting about this series is the magic system. Basically, it takes a standard ‘language of power’ setup and tweaks it by having spell effectiveness be determined by sentence structure, personal imagination, and environmental context. For example: A spell that uses ‘darkness’ or ‘night’ in its incantation will be less effective when cast in daylight (regardless of its intended effects). It’s a neat idea that provides a credible reason for why the protagonist can be so effective in combat situations despite his lackluster magic reserves.
