    THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION

This, now this, is basically everything I’m looking for in an overpowered protagonist and/or kingdom-building series. It’s practically perfect. The only black marks against it are that the entire orc leadership sidequest reads like it was ripped from a battle shounen and that the author is one of those who refuses to fix mistakes pointed out in the comments (the rarity of those mistakes makes it all the more glaring).

    Dragonlord

I’ve come to find that I’m rather fond of ‘time travel isekai’ and this series is no exception. While there are some believability issues, and the early academy arc in particular is rather forced, the character interactions are fun and the setting’s mythology is interesting.

    URBAN KNIGHT: Return of Legends

Also (apparently) a time travel isekai, this series goes in an urban fantasy direction. While I certainly enjoyed it at first, after about twenty or so chapters I had to conclude that the level of sentimentality (e.g. ‘warm gazes’) was just too high for my taste.

    Fallen Magic

An urban fantasy, coming of age, magic academy series which aims for realism over spectacle (it’s also got a dark undercurrent that may or may not become more prominent later on). It ended up more enjoyable than expected, mainly due to the character interactions, but I had to drop it a little over 20 chapters in after it went far too hard on the ‘mercy for a traitor’ subplot.

    The Legend of the Luminaires

Reads a lot like a western young adult novel, and those are not something I generally enjoy reading. Also has a weird font.

    An Angel’s Road to Hell

The conversation style didn’t work for me.

    Infernal Investigations

While I’m not thrilled with how the protagonist deliberately weakens herself nor how many are keen to take advantage of her, the world-building is interesting and the parts where she’s not pigeonholed as a victim are top notch.

    Shadowbane

Something about the irreverent atmosphere doesn’t quite feel right when meshed with the heavy subject matter and it’s annoying that the protagonist has such a perfect assassination ability yet no offensive abilities or ranged weapons to go with it. Was also more than a little annoyed by the soft reset at the end of the first book.

I will strive Beyond This Cursed Bloodline

This story reads very much like a fan-translation of a Japanese light novel, with a large number of odd turns of phrase and instances of broken syntax. Personally I ended up finding the style kind of charming… even if I did have to give up providing edit suggestions only a few chapters in. No, ultimately what caused me to drop it near the end of the second book was the whole ‘can’t control her powers’ plotline that got introduced. It just felt completely arbitrary and at odds with how her soulscape had been built up specifically to grant total control over her abilities.

    Farisa’s Crossing

Definitely interesting, but I’m starting to think psychological and/or underdog stories just aren’t what I’m looking for.

    DEMON QUEEN Wants to Paint

The title is pretty accurate, far moreso than I was expecting honestly. Starting her off as a baby was a bold move when combined with her total rejection of everything around her, and one that just doesn’t work for me.

    1% LIFESTEAL

The setting pissed me off just a little bit too much to stick around long enough to see how/if the protagonist’s personality evolved.

  • Min-Maxing My TRPG Build in Another World #9 Canto I-II & From Villainess to Healer

Posted on December 30, 2024 12:47 pm by Offkorn Comment

The tenth and eleventh TRPG Player books are once again a split volume. The focus this time is on bringing down a drug cartel while facing off against a team of assassins, assassins who moonlight as love interests in the second half’s surprisingly sex-centered alternate timeline segment (the first alternate timeline segment features the protagonist as a pirate-hunting privateer). Nothing much to complain about in either half.

Kaifukushoku no Akuyaku Reijou meanwhile is an extremely light-hearted and low-stakes adventure with basically zero believability that looks like it’s going to end up more travelogue than dungeon-crawler. And though the ‘healer’ part of the title is well-represented, you can completely ignore the ‘villainess’ part since the only villain in this story so far is her former fiancé.

  • One Moo’r Plow #1-2 & Rift Magus REBORN #1-2

Posted on December 28, 2024 4:53 am by Offkorn Comment

The One Moo’r Plow series reminds me of The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects, just with more action instead of any problematic romance elements. That said, some romance elements are eventually introduced toward the end of the second book… which is otherwise almost entirely action-focused. Which is to say this series is in no way a ‘cozy farming fantasy’ (a description I strongly suspect was added ironically). Instead it’s a rather blood-drenched mercenary tale with daydreams of capitalist expansion.

Rift Magus Reborn on the other hand (subtitle: Rise of the Arcane Aristocrat) reminds me of Legend of the Arch Magus. They start out quite similar and have similar themes, with the key difference being that the protagonist here doesn’t have any land under his control. So the first two books are mostly concerned with establishing a dominant position both militarily (through personal strength) and financially (through business deals secured with the former). The pacing is pretty swift so far so I don’t think it will be much longer until he has a similar level of authority as well.

  • The Water Magician: The Central Provinces Arc III & Dimension Wave

Posted on December 19, 2024 12:46 am by Offkorn Comment

The third Mizu Zokusei novel is much like the first two. If you enjoyed the banter in those then there’s no reason not to continue on through this one.

Dimension Wave is a story in the vein of Free Life Fantasy, except with a protagonist who’s obsessed with fishing rather than crafting and isn’t (yet) notably overpowered. There isn’t anywhere near as strong a focus on game mechanics either, with it being more ensemble-based with a greater emphasis on character interaction… and fairly strong hints of future harem development.

  • REBORN as the FIRST BOSS #5 & Winterborn

Posted on December 17, 2024 11:10 am by Offkorn Comment

The fifth of Stuart Grosse‘s Reborn as the First Boss novellas is almost stand-alone, focusing as it does on the elimination of an inquisitor squad. In a way it comes across as filler… despite not being any worse than the earlier entries.

Another series by the same author, albeit one of full-length novels, Winterborn resembles the above series. The key distinction is that while that is a story with RPG elements, this is more a novelized Icewind Dale campaign complete with positioning grids, fully transcribed dice rolls, and (in the later novels) hundreds of pages of character sheet.

The first three books cover a relatively low-level scenario focused on werewolves with the evil protagonist being of the ‘self-centered’ variety rather than the ‘slaughtering innocents’ variety. Of particular note is that while sexual topics/encounters come up from time to time, they don’t go into any detail. The second three then cover an epic-level campaign (following a time skip) and are much more like First Boss, with explicit sex scenes and a shift toward conquest on a societal level.

Overall I enjoyed the series quite a bit, with only two things in particular being annoying. The first is that the fifth book (Invader) in general is by far the weakest. Both because that’s where the explicit sex starts spontaneously popping up and because there’s an entire chapter devoted to, of all things, FFXIV fanfiction. The second annoyance is far more minor: We never see the reactions of the Dale tribes to any of her actions. While it’s fairly fitting for a D&D campaign to kind of ignore the PC’s backstory… it feels like a loose end.

  • The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind! #8 & Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #8

Posted on December 16, 2024 10:52 am by Offkorn Comment

I picked up this eighth volume of Isekai Mahou wa Okureteru! after seeing the series had finally come off hiatus only to promptly drop it ~15% of the way through after being reminded of everything I didn’t like about it.

Speaking of things I didn’t like, I still have no idea why I keep following Immortal Princess. Somehow despite coming within a hair’s breadth of dropping it at the beginning of the eighth installment, which starts off incredibly randomly, I ended up at the end with an ambivalent “may as well keep reading to see where it goes”. Can’t even begin to explain how that happened.

  • Pathfinder: WotR – A DANCE OF MASKS & Aeon/Devil/Gold Dragon

Posted on December 10, 2024 10:52 am by Offkorn Comment

The A Dance of Masks DLC for WotR adds two things to the main campaign.

The first is a somewhat sizable questline which triggers partway through Chapter V, which happens to include a mostly optional set of arena battles against an assortment of fairly random opponents. Apart from some awkward voice acting, as if the actors hadn’t had time to re-familiarize themselves with the roles (only Regil and to a lesser extent Woljif didn’t stand out), there’s nothing much on the technical side to complain about. Mechanically it’s pretty easy and tosses a bunch of overpowered items at you on top of that. That said, the arena fights on the other hand are a completely mixed bag. While most don’t pose much of an issue, there are some that are just plain ridiculous (like the wild hunt, or that shadow monk if you don’t have Mass Heal). I certainly do appreciate the free Greater Restoration after every match though and the rewards are useful enough.

The other addition is a new quest available to the Devil mythic path if the queen survives the events at Iz. Not really sure what the point of that was honestly as it feels kind of like it’s sectioned off into its own thing and doesn’t really flow well.

I played the above shortly after quickly running through the Gold Dragon endgame and finishing up my Aeon playthrough (made some mistakes there like going Crossblooded when the Abyss STR bonus gets overridden by DoM’s +4 attribute potion and forgetting Transformation) to finally get that Sadistic Game Design achievement.

Aeon’s unique ending is pretty good and the whole altering the past theme is integrated fairly well. Gold Dragon on the other hand is mostly just annoying, with its quests sending you out into the middle of nowhere, but it also has a somewhat unique ending which at least fits the theme. Devil, as it turns out, is even more annoying than Gold Dragon since you have to wait months to work through the event chain that grants Mythic Level 9… and it doesn’t even have a unique way to resolve the final battle.

Final thing to note is that I also cleared the full-power version of Sithhud added by importing a Lord of Nothing save. It is not something I ever wish to do again. The first two phases are fine, no problem. The third though… in the third you have to kill him nine times while he gets slightly stronger after each death and constantly jumps around the arena. I actually almost ran out of Empowered+Bolstered Hellfire Rays on Ember while taking him down.

  • The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #9 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS

Posted on December 8, 2024 5:55 am by Offkorn Comment

After the disappointment of Kuitsume Youhei no Gensou Kitan’s eighth novel I wasn’t really expecting anything (besides further disappointment) from the follow-up. Fortunately though it turned out pretty decent and more or less on par with the earlier books. Guess I won’t be dropping the series just yet after all.

Picking up Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken on a whim, I ended up pleasantly surprised that it’s primarily a misunderstanding-based comedy somewhat in the vein of Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai. The protagonist here however isn’t a dissembling coward and it gets quite a bit more graphic in the combat department. That said, the beginning is pretty rough with how he basically gets brow-beaten into adopting his training regime and it doesn’t truly pick up until after he becomes king about a third of the way through.

  • The Otome Heroine’s Fight for Survival #3 & The Former Assassin Who Got Reincarnated as a Noble Girl #2

Posted on December 6, 2024 11:09 am by Offkorn Comment

The third Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival book goes on a bit of a sidequest to eliminate a village full of orcs before looping around at the end to return to the conflict with Graves, while also setting the stage to pull the protagonist back into the Princess’ orbit. It’s perfectly fine.

Moto Ansatsusha‘s second entry meanwhile unexpectedly introduces harem elements instead of focusing on the established love triangle. Is each book going to feature her attendant and the prince being jealous over a new suiter (whom she doesn’t even realize is attracted to her)? That seems like it will get old fast. Putting that potential issue aside, the only other problem is how weirdly the remaining twin is handled. Flipping from ‘delusional idiot’ to ‘promising assassin’ so quickly makes no sense whatsoever.
