  • [PSYCHOKINETIC] EYEBALL PULLING #3 & HERETICAL FISHING

Posted on May 19, 2024 8:48 am by Offkorn Comment

The most notable thing about the third Psychokinetic novel is the technical errors. There are quite a few editing-related issues such as garbled/missing words, duplicated sentences (in one case an entire duplicated scene), and even a couple completely indecipherable engrish sentences. Relatively speaking there aren’t that many, but they do unfortunately stand out quite a bit when they appear.

That issue aside I’m not sold on the story’s progression aspects. The strength of various antagonists just comes across as completely arbitrary with each combat encounter feeling more like stage dressing to justify granting the protagonist higher levels. The implementation of which seems fundamentally flawed in general, individual strength being completely discordant from stated level. So, yeah, I don’t think I’ll be following it any further.

I’d initially dismissed Amazon’s recommendation of Haylock Jobson‘s Heretical Fishing as too goofy. But after seeing Dungeon of Knowledge‘s author recommend it as well I decided to give it a chance… and I’m sure glad I did.

While it is absolutely just as goofy a comedy as the description would have you believe, there’s also some bite to the underlying events and background setting. Ultimately what it will come down to is whether or not the comedy style works for you, as it’s what everything else revolves upon. Well, that and being able to relate to a ‘master of the universe’ who threw it all away to go fishing and magically ends up even more well off.

  • Enough with This Slow Life! #6 & The Frontier Lord #3

Posted on May 14, 2024 11:31 am by Offkorn Comment

The sixth Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita novel is about a quarter kingdom building (without much actual kingdom building), half warfare focused, and a quarter subtle romantic development. You also get quite a bit of backstory on the world’s creation as something of a bonus. Not sure where it will go from here since all his goals have been met.

Ryoumin 0-nin Start‘s third novel is pretty much all daily life scenes with a tiny bit of foreshadowing toward the end. It’s consistently entertaining, but along with the massive age gap I’m not much of a fan of the sheep… whose numbers have now multiplied. So I’m a bit ambivalent about continuing the series.

  • Phoenix Peaks & by Blood Oath Bound

Posted on May 11, 2024 5:54 am by Offkorn Comment

Despite the title, the twelfth Beneath the Dragoneye Moons novel only has 3-4 chapters centering on the Phoenix Peaks. The vast majority of the book is centered on the protagonist’s wedding, various daily life things, and a trip she takes to learn more about wizardry (with a couple chapters devoted to traveling through the northern territory near the end). That’s not to say it’s bad, but it’s definitely a bait-and-switch.

Kenley Davidson‘s second Night Elves of Abreia book on the other hand could be considered bad, depending on your point of view. There’s a massive amount of railroading here and the protagonist is continuously forced into doing things she does not want to do, while the romance aspects center on a less than stellar ‘love at first sight’ variation in which neither person is willing to admit their feelings. It’s fairly painful.

  • SHATTERED LIMITS & C.O.R.P.S.E. #1-3

Posted on May 5, 2024 11:12 am by Offkorn Comment

The second of Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 novels, Shattered Limits continues along the outlined progression path with the only hiccups being the occasional technical error and unclear formatting (time skips and scene breaks aren’t visually distinct from conversation breaks). If you liked the first book there shouldn’t be any surprises here, though do note it ends on a cliffhanger.

Michael Anderle‘s first three C.O.R.P.S.E. novels (Out in the Cold, Blade in the Dark, Silence After the Storm) tell the story of a highly advanced android assassin navigating a path between getting revenge on her mentor’s murderer and learning what it is to be human. The first two are quite good, but things begin to fray in the third with somewhat forced event developments and awkward romance elements. It took me awhile to get through it and looking at the descriptions for the next three books in the series I suspect they’ll be much worse where the former issue is concerned.

Let’s start off with the new series:

Dainana Maouji Zilbagias no Maou Keikokuki (English subtitle: How the Seventh Prince Brought Down the Kingdom): A ‘reincarnated into the same world’ story, this focuses primarily on the drama associated with suddenly becoming the child of your worst enemy with occasional bursts of comic relief here and there. What’s interesting is that learning about this enemy race’s attributes from the inside only makes the protagonist more determined to destroy them. The only real issue here is toward the end with the introduction of the high elf petplay, which I can only see growing more repellant as events progress.

Botsuraku Yotei no Kizoku dakedo, Hima Datta kara Mahou o Kiwametemita: Also a ‘reincarnated into the same world’ story, this one is instead a guilty pleasure power fantasy with a protagonist that loves training to a degree similar to Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s. Unfortunately (like with Ore wa Subete o Parry suru) the event progression is so blisteringly fast that you reach a point that’s exceptionally hard to swallow before the first book even ends. The whole magical familiar contract situation is also all kinds of problematic.

Buchigire Reijou wa Houfuku o Chikaimashita. (English subtitle: How I Crushed My Homeland with My Mighty Grimoires): Basically Konyaku Haki kara Hajimaru Akuyaku Reijou no Kangoku Slow Life if it were a kingdom-building revenge story instead of a comedy. While at first the protagonist here comes across as fairly well-adjusted, by the end of the novel it becomes clear she’s arguably even more psychopathic than that series’.

Now on to the continuing ones:

Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan #7: Contrary to my earlier assumption the protagonist does not leave the stage… he doesn’t even manage to disguise his new identity long enough to reach the end of the novel. Honestly, I have no idea what even the point of faking his death in the first place was since it doesn’t seem to have accomplished much of anything he couldn’t have done openly.

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken #18: The eighteenth Tensura novel starts out quite dire and remains so for roughly the entire first three-quarters. Just an incredible waste of time. Why use a cliffhanger in the prequel only to have it lead into a bog-standard meeting? Bizarre. The last quarter is quite good though, so there’s that.

  • REBORN as the FIRST BOSS #1-2 & LEVIATHAN

Posted on April 25, 2024 9:27 am by Offkorn Comment

Another novella series, Reborn as the First Boss is notably different from the author‘s Lich Returnee series.

That’s post-isekai while this is ‘reincarnated into a game world’, that features an asexual antihero while this has a promiscuous villain in the lead, and that is superficially anti-slavery while this is openly pro-slavery. What they share is a similar page count, an overpowered protagonist (albeit less of one here), and entertaining character interactions. So give it a chance if you liked that and don’t mind the occasional sex scene.

I picked up Erik Schubach‘s Leviathan, the first book in his Worldship Files series, by accident. See, I have two hard rules about whether or not to pick up a series: Avoid those that advertise the genre in their title (Half-Life Empire slipped through here because I mistook ‘Alien Apocalypse’ for the series name), and avoid any with a consistently sub-200 page count (novellas excluded). This falls into the latter category, with each book being a bit shorter than your average light novel.

That said, it seems decent enough if you can look past the rather forced romance elements. ‘Urban fantasy on a colony ship’ is a pretty interesting setting at least.

  • The Eminence in Shadow #4 & Sword Saint Adel’s Second Chance #2

Posted on April 15, 2024 6:27 am by Offkorn Comment

Against my better judgement, I went and picked up the fourth Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! novel after watching the second season of the Anime. The adaptation of the third novel wasn’t as head-and-shoulders above the one for the first two, so I figured I wouldn’t be missing much by reading the source material’s version of the ‘return to Earth’ arc immediately.

Two things quickly became clear. The first being that the original version of the wedding arc was severely lacking compared to the adaptation, and the second being that the start of the ‘return’ arc is completely different from what was shown at the end of the Anime. There are neither cyborgs nor a rescue in the original, which leaves me wondering what exactly the showrunners are up to.

Kenseijo Adel no Yarinaoshi‘s second entry is much like the first content-wise. Though a little on the short side, the pacing is solid and events are wrapped up nicely without any glaring absences. The most notable aspect would probably be Adel obliviously stealing the affections of the princess’ alternate timeline fiancé.

  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE #2 & As a Reincarnated Aristocrat #4

Posted on April 7, 2024 8:48 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei novel continues along the same path laid down by the first, with the protagonist cheerfully running around making weapons of mass destruction and plopping down new settlements one after another while onlookers watch in amazement. He does a bit of attacking toward the end here though, rather than defending, and it looks like the next book will be war-centric.

Speaking of wars, the fourth Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru novel eventually wraps up its civil war arc. While it’s good that it concluded, the path taken ended up pretty unbelievable. Having a neighboring country (recently over its own civil war) throw away tens of thousands of soldiers in order to attack the protagonist out of nowhere is already out of line. Then giving them an infinite morale cheat on top of it? Incredibly heavy-handed.

Regardless, if the Afterword is to be believed the series will return to a more sedate recruitment-focused pacing in the next book.

  • Last Epoch Update

Posted on March 28, 2024 11:59 am by Offkorn Comment

Took a bit, but now I have eleven of Last Epoch‘s fifteen available specializations sitting at the Cultist Camp. Which (while still quite early game) is a good point to get a feel for most of the builds’ playstyles.

The Chaos Warlock gets real crazy once it unlocks Chaos Bolt. Just a constant stream of devastation. What’s particularly nice about this build is that since you only have 3 active skills, you can put skeletons or a bone golem on the free slots for some extra damage/distractions with zero drawback. Speaking of which, taking Blood Pact so far has worked out well. It has no downside against powerful single targets and against groups the life drain is negligible with all the healing you get.

Less chaotic but no less insane damage-wise, the Sparking Spellblade starts getting real crazy once all the synergies start firing. Although early on you’ll want to play it a bit safe and use Lightning Blast manually as a starter, by the time you reach the surface of the Ruined Timeline you should be able to just teleport into masses of enemies and destroy them with both Mana Strike and Static discharges. I cannot wait until Surge gets unlocked and the final piece of the puzzle is assembled.

The Bleed Bomb Falconer starts off quite slow since all the key abilities are unlocked later, yet once you acquire Falconry stuff just gets minced. Even without Net and Dive Bomb the Falcon Strike ability alone just lays down total devastation. Zero complaints.

Last of the Icy Veins builds, the Cleaving Void Knight just takes off once you get Erasing Strike. The combo of Lunge -> Void Cleave -> Erasing Strike -> Volatile Reversal is just plain unfair. Nothing to complain about with this build either.

And that’s it for the builds I modified. Now on to the ones I put together from scratch.

One of the later ones, the Harvest Lich build focuses on the titular Harvest skill supported by Spirit Plague, (unchanneled) Drain Life, and Reaper Form. Spirit Plague melts anything it touches to a shocking degree. At first I was torn on whether to use Transplant or Reap as the mobility skill, but ultimately Transplant’s Bone Armor tipped the scales in that direction. Currently Reaper Form is saved for bosses, but eventually it should have basically full uptime. We’ll see.

Last of the Acolyte specializations is the Volatile Necromancer. This build had a bit of a journey, as first the idea was to just cast nothing but Volatile Zombies with the Bone Marrow node activated. Then I realized that Summon Wraith could handle spawning the zombies and Cycle of Putrescence would always keep at least one perpetually spawned. And then, finally, I realized I was being silly and dropped Bone Marrow completely in favor of leveling the wraiths. Just beware of Transplanting into a hostile situation and nothing should ever be able to get close to you.

For Sorcerer I decided to go with a fire-based channeling build. The idea here is to use Disintegrate on general trash mobs and then switch to Elemental Nova for bosses or massive swarms. Flame Ward provides constant protection, Teleport acts as both mobility and extra damage (from the Nova nodes), and Arcane Ascendance is just there to add insult to injury. Main issue here is the perpetual mana shortage and early game the damage is rather lacking. At this point (Cultist Camp) the damage finally seems to be catching up to some of the above builds, so we’ll see how things develop.

Lots of minor changes have been made to my Stormy Beastmaster build. I kept flip-flopping on how to ultimately level the wolves, finally settling on maxing out Tundra Stalkers, Stormborn, and On the Hunt while ignoring the Howl nodes. Gathering Storm also had some back-and-forth and may yet still depending on how the mana situation is later on. Pretty happy with its damage and crowd-control aspects so far though.

For the Thorn Druid build I eventually decided on going the 24/7 shifter route. It will be some time until I can see if Swarmblade is worth it, but right now the Totems (and unleveled Wolf) combined with Spriggan Form’s Vines and Spirit Thorns just massacre enemy groups. I’ve been using leveled Gathering Storm with the staff bolt and physical shift nodes as a placeholder so far to decent effect, but plan to replace it with Summon Spriggan once that’s unlocked and start using unleveled Upheaval as the main attack (assuming my shapeshift uptime is still lacking at that point).

Next up is the Ethereal Marksman, who seems to wield something closer to a machinegun than a bow. Flurry is fast. One of the ‘late bloomer’ builds, you’re going to have some difficulty with swarms early on until Multishot unlocks (I ended up using a combination of Acid Flask and Decoy to acceptable effect). Once it does you never really have to do anything other than Flurry, toss the occasional Decoy, or drop an (unleveled) Smoke Bomb at your feet if something gets close. The endgame strategy here is to Flurry everything, then if something nasty gets hit use (unleveled) Dark Quiver into Decoy and follow that up with a Flow-boosted Hail of Arrows. Time will tell if the gimmick is worth it or not.

And last up is my Retaliation Sentinel build, which specializes as a Forge Guard. Gods I love retaliation builds. Sure it’s less than thrilling when you’re fighting something slow or physically resistant, but when you can just (unleveled) Shield Charge through multiple groups of enemies then double back to Rebuke them all into paste…. Few things can even dent my health pool through the Vengeance defense buffs, and those that do get instantly nullified by the Healing Hands auto-spam. Just crazy survivability so far.

As for the four remaining specializations (Runemaster, Bladedancer, Paladin, and Shaman)… I’m going to hold off making any of them for the time being. I want some progress in the main quest to get a better feel for the expected progression level first.

Posted on March 27, 2024 12:30 am by Offkorn Comment

Free Life Fantasy remains perplexingly readable despite its sixth installment essentially being just an extended blog post. Like, why would anyone care about a fictional character’s upcoming crafting plans and daily grinding regimen? Yet somehow it continues to work.

The third Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru novel is basically a tournament arc in which the protagonist shows off her freakish adaptability. The elves at the end of the previous novel turned out to be a misdirection, as there’s still no explanation for why she has this superhuman ability, and it looks like there will be actual romantic development in the next book… assuming her impressive level of self-delusion doesn’t kick it up a notch.
