  • Go-Toubun no Hanayome

Posted on April 4, 2019 12:01 pm by Offkorn Comment

The day of his wedding having finally arrived, Fuutarou Uesugi thinks back to how it all began. When he was a debt-ridden high school student who blindly agreed to tutor a wealthy family’s daughter… only to discover that he’s expected to tutor five sisters rather than one, quintuplets who would rather do anything else at all than study.

A reaction-focused romantic comedy with harem elements and a small amount of ecchi.

Posted on April 2, 2019 1:37 pm by Offkorn 1 Comment

Due to a twist of fate, the recently orphaned novelist Subaru Mikazuki ends up living together with an abandoned cat wary from time spent on the streets. With neither being particularly sociable their initial relationship is an awkward one, yet as time goes by the small actions of day-to-day life together begin to add up to something more.

A pet-centric daily life comedy with minor dramatic elements. Note that part of each episode is a retelling of events from the cat’s point of view.

  • Saiki Kusuo no Sainan

Posted on July 8, 2018 8:23 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

Witness the daily routine of Kusuo Saiki, a psychic with godlike power who just wants to live a calm ordinary life. A desire constantly thwarted by the ensemble of hyperactive characters who seem drawn to him like a magnet.

A segmented semi-random absurdist gag comedy. Note that it includes a remade version of the earlier web special.

  • Aquarion Logos

In a world where text-based communication has begun to dominate discourse, a virus has appeared that causes certain Kanji to run amok. To counter this threat the DEAVA organization has gathered up people with Verbalism abilities to pilot special mecha called Aquarions.

An action series with a large comedic streak and minor romance elements which becomes more of a multi-genre series in the second half. While the OVA that precedes the first episode is a crossover between Aquarion and Evol, the series proper has no connection to those shows beyond a few setting details.

Far in the future a mysterious disease eliminates the planet Altair’s female population. Not wanting their race to go extinct they decide to abduct women from the planet Vega, which responds by forming a gender-segregated defense force to repel the increasingly brazen attacks. However, only by coming together can the pilots harness the true power of the Aquaria mecha.

A relationship focused action series that’s set thousands of years after the events of Sousei no Aquarion. The connection between the two is mostly limited to the character reincarnation theme and having seen that isn’t necessary to follow along here.

  • Tales of Zestiria the X

Posted on May 1, 2017 8:11 am by Offkorn Comment

Alisha is a princess desperately trying to avoid war while searching for a ‘Shepard’ to save the land from an encroaching darkness. Sorey is the lone human in a village of seraphim, beings invisible to most humans, who loves exploring ancient ruins. A chance meeting between the two sets in motion events that just may change the world.

An action drama with comedic ‘next episode preview’ segments. While almost entirely an adaptation of the Zestiria video game, a couple episodes (5-6) adapt the beginning of Beseria. Note that the Doushi no Yoake special is included here in a slightly altered form.

  • Saiki Kusuo no Sainan

Posted on April 6, 2017 10:28 am by Offkorn Comment

Brief glimpses into the disastrous life of Kusuo Saiki, a powerful psychic who hides his abilities from the public and tries not to stand out.

A random-style gag comedy broken up into 4-minute long segments. While there isn’t much in the way of plotlines, there is consistency between the episodes and the protagonist’s deadpan delivery stays constant throughout. The web episode from 2013 is included in this version.

  • Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars

Posted on November 27, 2016 5:51 pm by Offkorn Comment

    regalia-title

Following a mysterious mass disappearance that occurred 12 years prior, Rena just wants to live a quiet everyday life. This is not to be, as the past catches up to fling her and her surrogate family into a conflict over the power of lost gods.

Primarily consisting of action and drama, the show also periodically dips into daily life territory every few episodes as a sort of reprieve. Don’t go into it expecting lighthearted fluff though, as while it’s not full grimdark it still tries to play things seriously more often than not.

  • Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?

An MMO-playing otaku finds out that his online wife (Ako), who’s not a very good player, is a socially awkward girl in real life who can’t separate online fantasy from offline reality. Not only that, she and the other two members of his guild all turn out to attend the same school he does. Together they try to both improve Ako’s skills in game and help her separate fantasy from reality.

The show alternates between virtual reality settings (primarily fantasy), depicting the characters’ online gaming adventures, and a modern day school setting. The comedic setup isn’t much different from an ecchi harem at the base level, the main difference being that only one of the girls is pursuing the male protagonist.

  • D.Gray-man HALLOW

Posted on October 10, 2016 11:21 am by Offkorn Comment

    d-gray-man-hallow

A continuation of 2006’s D.Gray-man, this series picks up an indeterminable amount of time after the point that one ended. The protagonist(s) get their first chance to visit the Black Order’s new headquarters since being destroyed in the previous series, and Allen finds himself treated like an enemy after learning that he may no longer be alone in his own head.

The show does a decent job explaining the plot for people who may not have seen the earlier 103-episode series, but doesn’t elaborate on or explain the characters’ relationships with one another. So while you can jump right into the story here, treating it as an example of in medias res, you’ll probably not get much out of it since the character behavior/interactions are fairly central.
