  • HERETICAL FISHING #3 & RUTHLESS SPACE PIRATES ARE MARAUDING AND ALL I GOT IS THIS STAT MENU

In the third of Haylock Jobson’s Heretical Fishing novels we appear to be reaching the endgame. The town had been upgraded, enemies have been exorcised, the core romance has evolved, and the protagonist seems to be just a small step away from godhood. That said, the author could instead theoretically just shift into repetitive slice-of-life mode perpetually…. Guess we’ll have to see.

Considering the disappointing conclusion of All I Got Is This Stat Menu‘s third entry, the wait for the fourth book felt like it took forever. As expected the whole captivity thing didn’t last long, but instead of focusing on the Union or Empire it instead focuses on an independent sector plagued by pirates. Only at the very end does the Empire-related background plot and conflict with that one Warden Commander spontaneously erupt and get resolved. With only two books left in the series I’m rather curious where exactly it plans to go from there.

Aside from some grammatical issues and a bizarre cover image, the fourth book in D.C. Haenlien‘s Adelheid series is okayish I suppose. I’m not really sold on the vampire aspects though and the war focus isn’t all that interesting. Not sure if I’m going to continue it or not at this point.

Haylock Jobson‘s second Heretical Fishing novel starts off rather worse than the prequel; it goes a bit too heavy on the cultivator aspects while introducing far too many new awakened animals. Yet, at the very end, an utterly ridiculous plan to assault the capital comes together beautifully and makes all the lead-up worthwhile.

I’ve got almost no complaints with the third entry in Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 series. It continues merrily along the path it set out with the only hiccup being an incredibly out of place drinking contest. Plenty of action, some comedy, and even a bit of notable romantic development.

The most notable thing about the third Psychokinetic novel is the technical errors. There are quite a few editing-related issues such as garbled/missing words, duplicated sentences (in one case an entire duplicated scene), and even a couple completely indecipherable engrish sentences. Relatively speaking there aren’t that many, but they do unfortunately stand out quite a bit when they appear.

That issue aside I’m not sold on the story’s progression aspects. The strength of various antagonists just comes across as completely arbitrary with each combat encounter feeling more like stage dressing to justify granting the protagonist higher levels. The implementation of which seems fundamentally flawed in general, individual strength being completely discordant from stated level. So, yeah, I don’t think I’ll be following it any further.

I’d initially dismissed Amazon’s recommendation of Haylock Jobson‘s Heretical Fishing as too goofy. But after seeing Dungeon of Knowledge‘s author recommend it as well I decided to give it a chance… and I’m sure glad I did.

While it is absolutely just as goofy a comedy as the description would have you believe, there’s also some bite to the underlying events and background setting. Ultimately what it will come down to is whether or not the comedy style works for you, as it’s what everything else revolves upon. Well, that and being able to relate to a ‘master of the universe’ who threw it all away to go fishing and magically ends up even more well off.
