  • I PARRY EVERYTHING #2 & Dahlia in Bloom #7

The second Ore wa Subete o Parry suru book completes the storyline the first left incomplete in a ridiculously over-the-top fashion. It just keeps one-upping the power levels with every encounter to the point I just don’t see any reason to keep reading; it’s already gone far beyond what could be considered believable opposing forces and shows no signs of slowing down.

Madougushi Dahlia‘s seventh entry on the other hand sort of goes backwards. While you have the standard massive food focus, what should be the half devoted to magical tool making instead evangelizes heated tables. Why write a fantasy setting if you’re just going to obsess over modern conveniences?

Don’t think I’ll be following either of these series any further.

  • Dahlia in Bloom #6 & Enough with This Slow Life! I WAS REINCARNATED AS A HIGH ELF AND NOW I’M BORED

The sixth Madougushi Dahlia novel immediately gets (some of) the food rhapsodizing out of the way to introduce a semi-dramatic plotline focusing on making a particularly complex tool for her best friend. It also both closes up the loose ends with her ex-fiancé and puts the the seemingly slow romantic development in perspective; only about four months have passed since the start of the series.

The lengthily-titled Tensei shite High Elf ni Narimashita ga, Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita is a bit misleading in its description. He does not actually abandon living a slow life, just slightly alters the magnitude of how slow it is; he has no trouble spending decades advancing his hobbies (blacksmithing, swordfighting, eating, and finally magic).

While it in general reminds of Kino no Tabi (with an actually powerful protagonist who can drive change), the timescale ends up the defining feature with this first book covering roughly thirty years. And I certainly hope it continues at that scale if for no other reason than the apparently impending introduction of a child character.

  • Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start With Magical Tools #1-5

Madougushi Dahlia wa Utsumukanai turned out to be a fairly entertaining pseudo-Cinderella story.

It splits its time between relationship development, both with the central couple and assorted side characters, and occasionally technical crafting segments not too dissimilar from Kajiya de Hajimeru‘s. Which is to say it classifies cooking as a crafting discipline.

No joke, at least 30% or so of each novel is food and drink-related with the main saving grace being that they are not pagecount-starved. So you still get quite a bit of magical tool making, amusing character interactions, business development, and class-based anxiety.

Only real potential issue with it is how the two leads doggedly insist on considering themselves ‘just friends’ despite being a couple in every way that matters… though personally I kind of find that refreshing.
