  • Ousama Game: The Animation

Posted on February 10, 2018 2:02 pm by Offkorn Comment

Following the traumatic events of the last King`s Game Nobuaki Kanazawa moves far away into a new school. Initially terrified of making new friends, he slowly opens up at the urging of his outgoing classmate Natsuko Honda… only to suddenly get a text message heralding the start of a new King’s Game.

A school-life horror story that alternates between present and past events. It’s an Anime-original combination of two manga versions and can be watched as a stand-alone.

  • Kizumonogatari

Posted on July 15, 2017 4:58 pm by Offkorn Comment

Walking home from the store one night Koyomi Araragi finds a vampire on the verge of death, and against his better judgement he decides to sacrifice himself so that she can survive. He does not die however. Instead, she transforms him into a vampire and tasks him with recovering her lost limbs from the hunters who stole them.

A prequel to Bakemonogatari, this series of movies fully fleshes out the brief flashback you get there. Content composition is similar with the main difference being that a larger percentage is dedicated to action and horror.

  • Mousou Kagaku ADV – Chaos;Child

Posted on March 31, 2017 4:10 am by Offkorn Comment

Strange suicides have begun occurring in Shibuya, deaths which bear a resemblance to the ones from the ‘New Generation of Madness’ incident from six years prior. For reasons of his own, the president of Hekiho Academy’s newspaper club has decided to investigate these incidents… ending up a target as result.

A horror thriller that eventually acquires the aspects of an ESP action series. While it’s a direct sequel to Chaos;Head, watching that is not required to watch this (though if you haven’t it would be a good idea to skip the ‘episode 0’ recap since it only works as a refresher).

  • Ao Oni: The Animation

Posted on March 25, 2017 3:24 pm by Offkorn Comment

Some students begin investigating an old folktale with curious similarities to the popular Ao Oni franchise and uncover a dark secret lurking beneath their school in the process.

A standard horror movie featuring simplistic 3DCG animation. It has no similarities with the short web series of the same name beyond the inclusion of the blue monster.

Four students enter a deserted mansion and find themselves locked inside with a large blue monster.

An absurdist comedy that plays common horror tropes/situations for laughs. Each episode has a random theme and features either some or all of the students getting killed/eaten, then everything gets reset the next episode.

  • biohazard: DAMNATION

Posted on January 7, 2017 2:10 pm by Offkorn Comment

Following the events of Biohazard: Degeneration, Leon is investigating rumors of monster sightings in eastern Europe. There he becomes entangled in a civil war in which the rebel fighters have begun using bio-organic weapons to even the playing field against the government’s military superiority.

Unlike the prequel which doesn’t rely on any detailed references to the games, this one expects you to know what happened in the fourth Biohazard game. It mixes monster-horror action with a bit of war drama.

  • biohazard: DEGENERATION

Posted on January 6, 2017 2:04 pm by Offkorn Comment

Seven years after the events of the first two Biohazard games, Claire Redfield ends up trapped in the middle of another T-virus outbreak. Leon S. Kennedy is tasked with the job of rescuing her and some other survivors, and the two of them stumble upon another conspiracy after getting caught up in a terrorist plot.

A full-CG action/horror movie. If you’ve ever played a zombie-themed corridor shooter, well this is basically that in movie form capped off by an elaborate boss battle.

Yuuta Gamon runs an occult aggregator blog that’s not doing as well as he’d hoped financially. In an effort to increase its popularity he ends up getting involved with actual occultists and finds himself in the middle of an extremely dangerous situation.

A hectic show that alternates between firing off dialog and densely-packed visuals at a remarkably quick pace. It also switches things up by alternating between off-the-wall comedy and mysterious/violent drama/horror.

  • More Caitlín R. Kiernan

Posted on June 9, 2013 12:10 pm by Offkorn Comment

This next set of Kiernan‘s books is somewhat different from the previous set. Three of them are constructed as though they were written by their in-universe characters (unreliable narrators all) while the last is a short-story compilation in graphic novel form.

The Red Tree is the literary equivalent of a ‘found footage’ movie. It is also brilliant. Beyond brilliant. Written in the form of a 1st-person diary as told from the point of view of a not particularly successful author on a summer retreat, it ends up eminently realistic and shockingly engrossing.

The follow-up to the above is The Drowning Girl. It’s quite a bit more fantastical and abstract than The Red Tree is as a result of being written from the perspective of a schizophrenic. It also has an extremely nonlinear narrative which can end up somewhat confusing at times. It’s still a remarkably intriguing read, just not exactly immersive and better appreciated as a fictional work than a potential reality.

Slightly changing gears from the previous two books, Blood Oranges‘ in-universe author’s lack of reliability does not come from mental distortions. Rather, it comes from her being a junky and prone to lies. Thematically speaking this is quite a bit different from the previous novels in that it’s conventional cut-and-dry urban fantasy rather than theoretical urban fantasy (i.e. fantasy that may just all be hallucinations/delusions instead of ‘real’). Presumably this is why it was written under the name of Kathleen Tierney… then again it says right on the cover: “Caitlín R. Kiernan Writing as“. So… who knows what the point of using a secondary name was. Anyway, it’s fairly amusing in a cynical fashion and quite entertaining. Somewhat busy though with lots of different supernaturals all crammed in together.

Finally we come to Alabaster: Wolves. This is a graphic novel compilation of short stories focused on the albino girl who appears in Threshold. Curiously, her personality seems quite a bit different here than it does there. Different bad rather than different good; the conversations are atrocious. The stories also seem especially simplistic and are frankly not particularly enjoyable in any respect. On the bright side, this contains some fairly fantastic pieces of full-page artwork.
