  • Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite shimatta… & Lapis Re:LiGHTs

Posted on November 3, 2020 2:28 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

The show with the excessively long title (which can be more sensibly shorted to HameFura if you’re so inclined) is a slightly unconventional isekai variant in which the protagonist doesn’t actually have any notable abilities. Her lack of notable skill is, in fact, apparently the very reason all the other characters like her so much (well, that and the way she unconsciously steals all the character-specific romance events for herself). This presents a problem; there’s not much of a reason to root for someone who continually fails into success after all.

A slightly more conventional ‘magical academy’ series, Lapis Re:Lights starts out featuring some pretty generic character behavior and event developments. Unilaterally forcing Tiara into Rosetta’s group at the beginning was completely unnecessary and leaves a bad taste, while the eventual idol reveal in the second episode (which almost completely invalidates the setting’s premise) is just soul-crushingly banal. I couldn’t bring myself to go any further.

Then there’s also Honzuki no Gekokujou, another reincarnation-based fantasy isekai with an unpowered protagonist, which I long suspected wouldn’t appeal to me based on said protagonist being a child. A suspicion that turned out to be completely accurate.

Desperately wishing to become a part of the Tactical Sound Unit Walküre, whose songs are integral to fighting outbreaks of a mysterious disease known as Vár Syndrome, the Windermiran Freyja Wion smuggles herself across the galaxy only to get caught up in a Vár outbreak while in transit. Rescued by the human pilot Hayate Immelmann, she manages to join Walküre just as war breaks out between Windermirans and the rest of the galaxy.

An alternative version of the Macross Delta TV series with a similar genre composition.

  • Gintama.: Porori Hen

While not always dealing with world-ending threats, where the three members of Yorozuya are concerned even normal everyday events such as going out for ramen can result in mass destruction or alien invasion.

A collection of primarily comedic stories which occur during the first half of Gintama°. For the most part they can be watched even by those unfamiliar with the series.

  • Ongaku Shoujo

Posted on October 10, 2018 5:37 am by Offkorn Comment

Perennially unpopular, the members of the Ongaku Shoujo idol group have tried just about everything to increase their sales or attract more attention. Their luck finally changes one day after meeting the idol-crazy Hanako Yamadagi, who’s currently visiting Japan with her musician parents: With the help of her advice and practically eidetic memory they suddenly begin to improve by leaps and bounds.

A comedic management-focused idol series with small flashes of relationship drama. Though it includes the characters from the 2015 movie of the same name, in all other respects the two are unrelated.

Having failed their boss one time too many, a group of three yazuka are forced to undergo gender-reassignment surgery in order to debut as a female idol group. A career change which, much to their horror, they turn out to be remarkably well-suited to.

A situational gag comedy with limited animation that plays off the juxtaposition of idols behaving like yazuka.

  • Mahou Shoujo Ore

Posted on June 19, 2018 1:29 pm by Offkorn 1 Comment

Saki Uno is just an ordinary girl with a crush on a popular idol, a feeling strong enough that she’s tried to become an idol herself in order to get closer to him… with notably lackluster results. Even worse, after coming home from yet another failed event she gets browbeaten by what appears to be a member of the yakuza while her crush gets kidnapped. One thing leads to another and soon she’s fighting demons as a crossdressing man with great physical power. Will her life ever be normal again?

An absurdist, 4th-wall breaking magical girl action comedy with an idol subtheme and several romantic subplots.

In a world without horses there exists a subset of girls who have inherited the souls and physical attributes of racehorses from our world, and a special academy was created for these horse girls in order to prepare them for nationally-viewed racing and performance events. Special Week is one such girl who has recently arrived from the countryside, and she’s determined to rise to the top of the rankings.

An idol-focused school life show fused with a horse-racing themed sports comedy.

  • Idolish Seven

Posted on June 14, 2018 9:57 am by Offkorn Comment

Wanting to expand into the idol business, Otoharu Takanashi has scouted seven promising young men to form a new group that will be managed by his daughter Tsumugi. Becoming successful will be an uphill battle however as not only do neither she nor the boys have any experience, but the owner behind the current top idol group has taken an unhealthy interest in them as well.

An idol-centric drama whose character interactions occasionally act as comic relief.

One morning while handing out balloons for a part-time job, Kanade Amamiya gets scouted by the super-idol Haruto Mikami. Though not interested at first he quickly comes around after being challenged to a training competition by one of the more hotheaded rookie idols. Now he and four other rookies must work together in order to secure a CD debut by winning their company’s annual Dream Festival competition.

An upbeat male idol show that often dips into relationship-related drama and features a concert segment at the end of nearly every episode.
