  • Only the Villainous Lord Wields the Power to Level Up & Infinite Dendrogram #16

Ore dake Level ga Agaru Sekai de Akutoku Ryoushu ni Natteita, which has a misleading title since the protagonist is not vicious/villainous in the slightest, perhaps unsurprisingly resembles Akutoku Kizoku no Seizon Senryaku in many ways. The execution here is notably better though with far more consistent character behavior.

The sixteenth Infinite Dendrogram novel is similar to the eleventh in that it’s a flashback focused on a different set of characters. Differences would be which characters are focused on (Hugo and the remaining previously unseen IF guild members in this case) and events taking place around the same time as the ninth book rather than the distant past.

While structurally sound, I didn’t find any of the featured characters here particularly interesting. Making this, for me at least, one of the worse books in the series. I’ll probably wait for the relatively recently released 20th entry to get translated before deciding whether or not to follow the series any further.

Infinite Dendrogram is a series that reminds me of The Great Cleric, Sword Art Online, and a bit of Strike the Blood as far as catchphrase overuse goes.

Primarily an action-comedy, it also has periodic heavy drama sections and a negligible amount of romance. Despite the presence of various harem elements the character interactions almost never go beyond the friend level (barring the occasional embarrassed reaction). It’s honestly a bit odd in that respect, with only the princess showing any explicit attraction.

Aside from that what sticks out most early on is the author’s inability to weave multiple narratives into a single whole. Rather than providing alternate points of view as the story progressed, they instead completely segregated them. The result being a couple novels that just suddenly end halfway through with the remaining pages covering side stories which should have been integrated into the main part. Fortunately, following the end of the series’ first major arc (the conclusion of Franklin’s Game) it ceases to be an issue.

Only other potential problem is the complete lack of combat balance inherent to the setting; you have to go into this series with either securely suspended disbelief or not at all.
