  • Fake Saint of the Year #4 & The Frontier Lord #2

Nise Seijo‘s conclusion turned out to be a total disappointment, coming across much like a ‘what if?’ fanfic. The Off to Japan segment in particular is just beyond baffling due to its massive food focus. Was the author just bottling up their desire to write a travelogue this whole time?

Basically, unless you’re absolutely desperate for a contrived happy ending, stick with treating the third novel as the series’ finale.

The second Ryoumin 0-nin Start novel meanwhile is much like the first, which I suppose shouldn’t be surprising since according to the Afterword it’s essentially the second half of the story’s prologue. At the moment I’m cautiously optimistic for future developments, but the indications of potential future romantic tensions do not bode well.

Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou! #6: This series‘ sixth entry is split into two parts. The first focuses on the unveiling of the protagonist’s invention and a hint of the future attention he’ll attract, while the second is the start of an academy arc. The author claims in the Afterword that ‘some things can only happen in a school setting’ as a defense for its inclusion… but I have to call bullshit on that.

Shinja Zero no Megami-sama to Hajimeru Isekai Kouryaku #10: This marks the start of the protagonist’s journey into the past. Featuring an almost entirely new cast of characters it nevertheless keeps up the general mood and feel of what came before. Will be interesting to see how/if all these fairly massive changes affect the future timeline.

Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou sugite #14: Serving as the series‘ conclusion, this final entry does a remarkably good job of wrapping up loose ends. The way they kind of just throw the whole Cave Quest plotline in the trash is a bit too meta, and it really never should have been included at all, but there’s otherwise nothing to complain about.

TenSura #17: This book of side-stories defied my earlier expectations. While the first one is pretty weak the rest are quite good and shed some light on both what the fire dragon was up to chasing soul fragments and how the Empire is going about rebuilding (neither of which would’ve worked as part of the main plotline). Looks like I’ll be continuing the series after all.

Nise Seijo #3: I suspected this novel might be the series’ conclusion, but that turns out to not quite be the case. While it does conclude the main plotline, the aftermath/epilogue is left for a fourth and final book. Definitely interested to see where the characters go from here.

The second Nise Seijo book is much like the first. No particular surprises here beyond that it looks like the next entry will cover the last parts of the game’s timeline… potentially being the series’ conclusion.

Maseki Gourmet‘s second novel is also more of the same. That’s most definitely not a positive in this case however, and the character interactions in particular are just purestrain cringe to the point I don’t see any reason to follow it further.

The first Nise Seijo book (English subtitle: You Wanted the Perfect Saint? Too Bad!) turned out far better than its synopsis would indicate. The reaction comedy is on-point, it’s not laden with fanservice, and there’s a nice mix of the protagonist’s actions backfiring in both expected and unexpected ways. Glad I decided to give it a chance after initially dismissing it.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Mugen Gacha (massive title omitted). It is every bit as bad as its synopsis would suggest. This book is purestrain self-insert wish fulfillment in its lowest and most half-assed form: Little rhyme or reason to event developments, every single side character fawning over the protagonist like Diablo from Tensura, and zero justification for his instantaneous transformation from wimp to merciless incarnation of vengeance.
