  • My INSTANT DEATH ability is so OVERPOWERED: After Story & Sword Saint Adel’s Second Chance #3

Posted on January 8, 2025 3:29 pm by Offkorn Comment

Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou sugite‘s Atoshimatsu-hen installment, oddly, starts off by detailing the healer’s first isekai adventure which occurred before the series proper began. Why? Who would ever care about that? From there it moves on to briefly address the other classmates before focusing on the one beastkin guy and the ninja duo. Little time is spent with the assorted Dannoura’s, and the protagonist barely appears.

The third Kenseijo Adel no Yarinaoshi novel is basically a mess. It starts out with far too much unicorn/pegasus fanservice and then ends with a ludicrously forced boss fight. Just the most hamfisted resolution possible.

  • The Eminence in Shadow #4 & Sword Saint Adel’s Second Chance #2

Against my better judgement, I went and picked up the fourth Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! novel after watching the second season of the Anime. The adaptation of the third novel wasn’t as head-and-shoulders above the one for the first two, so I figured I wouldn’t be missing much by reading the source material’s version of the ‘return to Earth’ arc immediately.

Two things quickly became clear. The first being that the original version of the wedding arc was severely lacking compared to the adaptation, and the second being that the start of the ‘return’ arc is completely different from what was shown at the end of the Anime. There are neither cyborgs nor a rescue in the original, which leaves me wondering what exactly the showrunners are up to.

Kenseijo Adel no Yarinaoshi‘s second entry is much like the first content-wise. Though a little on the short side, the pacing is solid and events are wrapped up nicely without any glaring absences. The most notable aspect would probably be Adel obliviously stealing the affections of the princess’ alternate timeline fiancé.

  • Sword Saint Adel’s Second Chance & Hazure Skill #1-3

Posted on February 15, 2024 10:38 am by Offkorn Comment

A work by the same author as Eiyuuou, Bu o Kiwameru Tame Tenseisu, Kenseijo Adel no Yarinaoshi (English subtitle: A Peerless Swordmaster Begins Anew as a Saint to Save the Princess) has a number of similarities to that series. For the most part they’re basic genre-related aspects though and the story/character details are rather different; I in fact didn’t even notice they were by the same person until the Afterword section explicitly mentioned it (which was fortunate since I probably wouldn’t have even picked it up had I known).

Anyway it’s decently entertaining if a bit on the rushed side, so I plan to keep following along so long as the author doesn’t repeat the mistakes he made with that pervious series.

Hazure Skill (English subtitle: The Guild Member with a WORTHLESS SKILL Is Actually a LEGENDARY ASSASSIN) is a series I initially skipped over due to some negative reviews complaining about a messed up story structure that was difficult to follow… and I have no idea what book they were reading because it certainly wasn’t any of these. Something of a cross between Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica and Lv2 kara Cheat this series is an overpowered protagonist comedy with an ecchi subfocus and a fondness for small forward timeskips.

Most chapters end with one and sometimes they even show up mid-chapter, giving the books a sort of anthology or 4-koma feel to them. A more minor thing to note would be that the title is a bit of a misdirection considering the protagonist possesses obscene physical, magical, and tactical abilities wholly independent of his relatively weak skill. The skill is completely beside the point.

If that were all I’d probably keep reading since the comedy bits are often pretty good, but, unfortunately, there’s also a rather large flaw: The romance aspects. They’re real bad, with innumerable lust-crazed women and girls throwing themselves at the protagonist often for no more reason than because he’s stronger than they are (to be fair, the rare male side characters throwing themselves at anyone with big breasts aren’t depicted any better). It gets old fast.
