The third of Sam Winton‘s Rift Magus novels mainly concerns itself with the introduction of a fight club that the protagonist proceeds to join and the conclusion of the Thornwood subplot. Basically, he gets cocky, reveals things he shouldn’t, and almost pays for it at the end with a pseudo-cliffhanger.

Michael Sisa‘s penultimate Legend of the Arch Magus entry spends most of its time in the dwarven kingdom, but also manages to squeeze in the demon realm’s implosion. With the main plotline now effectively complete almost as an afterthought… I can’t even begin to guess how it’s going to end.

I had thought the thirteenth Arch Magus novel was taking longer than usual to appear, and apparently (according to the Afterword here) it’s because the author burned out and was thinking of ending the series. They changed their mind though and this entry is kind of a transitory one centered on giving some backstory to that group of Imperial witches mentioned a few times earlier.

Michelle Sagara‘s latest Elantra novel focuses mainly on wrapping up the ‘seeing ghosts’ plotline while also tying it into and adding an addendum to the gold dragon’s backstory. Or rather, I’d like to say it focuses on that, but instead it mostly consists of chained recap segments which only eventually get around to dealing with that in a tortuously roundabout manner.

Michael Sisa‘s Legend of the Arch Magus novels are an unambiguous guilty pleasure sort of series. Just an overpowered protagonist steamrolling his way through various issues thanks to a combination of pure personal domination and suspiciously reasonable secondary characters, with a small bit of kingdom building thrown in for good measure. So long as you don’t expect any sort of nuance it should be enjoyable enough for fans of the genre (though do beware of both pointless cliffhangers and fairly low page counts).

The first book in Talia Beckett‘s Dragon Apparent series has a couple issues. The first is the setting: Why is it raining so much in Los Angeles? Why are the dragons more afraid of humans than unstoppable soul-devouring centipedes? The second is more severe: Most of the characters, the protagonist in particular, suffer from either suicidal stupidity or inconsistent characterization (sometimes both).

Maybe things smooth out later on, but right now I just don’t have the stomach to power through such high levels of bizarre naïveté.
