  • Homunculus Tears & The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #11

Posted on April 29, 2025 11:05 am by Offkorn Comment

I had to drop the Homunculus Tears novel (subtitle: Alchemy for the Brokenhearted) halfway through. It’s just so painfully overloaded with both forced sentimentality and forced fanservice. Basically nothing redeeming about it.

Something else I ended up dropping was the eleventh Kuitsume Youhei novel, which features the protagonists acting like complete idiots. They’ve experienced mind control before! Why are they so baffled about the people in this village not acting normally? When the animal companion is the smartest person in your party something has gone very, very wrong.

Not much to say about the fourth Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei novel, as it’s much the same in atmosphere to the prequels. So if you greatly enjoyed the character behavior up to this point it should continue to deliver. Personally though, the titular optimism is starting to wear on me.

The tenth Kuitsume Youhei installment feels phoned-in. It’s not bad exactly, but just comes across like filler. It seems to only exist as an excuse to inform the protagonists of the missing dark gods’ names… but you could’ve just had the known dark god list them off and not have bothered with this otherwise pointless trip.

  • The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #9 & HOW I BECAME KING BY EATING MONSTERS

Posted on December 8, 2024 5:55 am by Offkorn Comment

After the disappointment of Kuitsume Youhei no Gensou Kitan’s eighth novel I wasn’t really expecting anything (besides further disappointment) from the follow-up. Fortunately though it turned out pretty decent and more or less on par with the earlier books. Guess I won’t be dropping the series just yet after all.

Picking up Monster no Niku o Kutteitara Oui ni Tsuita Ken on a whim, I ended up pleasantly surprised that it’s primarily a misunderstanding-based comedy somewhat in the vein of Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai. The protagonist here however isn’t a dissembling coward and it gets quite a bit more graphic in the combat department. That said, the beginning is pretty rough with how he basically gets brow-beaten into adopting his training regime and it doesn’t truly pick up until after he becomes king about a third of the way through.

Nidome no Yuusha wa Fukushuu no Michi o Warai Ayumu is a series in the vein of Tate no Yuusha and Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi, just focused almost entirely on gruesome vengeance with not much in the way of sexual elements. There is a harem situation, but it’s a bit unique in that all the girls are some flavor of yandere.

Issues would be the not quite universal nature of the initial time reset (if others kept their memories it kind of undermines the whole premise), the vast majority of the third novel (which is mostly flashback), overuse of laughter-related onomatopoeia, and the cliffhanger ending of the fifth novel. It goes in an extremely unexpected direction there in one of the worst ways possible. Then again, it certainly hasn’t shied from torturing its protagonists alongside their enemies… so perhaps that isn’t quite as random as it seems.

Either way, it looks like the sixth novel will either make or break the series.

Speaking of cliffhangers, the eighth Kuitsume Youhei novel also happens to end on one, albeit one far less severe. It also feels a lot shorter than previous entries and honestly doesn’t really accomplish/add much of anything.

If the next book continues that trend I’m probably going to end up dropping it.

The Utsuro naru Regalia series is apparently written by the same author as Strike the Blood. You wouldn’t know it from reading the first book (Corpse Reviver) though, as it bears no resemblance to that series… what it reminds me of instead with the military focus, post-apocalyptic setting, and dragon powers is God Eater.

A solid enough start all things considered.

The seventh Kuitsume Youhei novel meanwhile switches things up a little from the previous ones in the resolution department. The general outline is much the same however (which to me at least is a good thing), so don’t expect any surprises.

Based on the cover of the first Kuitsume Youhei no Gensou Kitan novel, you might expect to find a variation of Berserk‘s main character as its protagonist… and those expectations would be fulfilled. This series is basically pre-demon invasion Guts if he happened to live in Goblin Slayer‘s setting.

It is not obsessed with goblins however, so each novel (so far) features a different sort of antagonist ranging from undead, to slimes, to fae. What binds everything together are three ongoing background plots: The evolving relationship between the two main characters, the periodic appearance of unsealed dark gods, and the mystery behind Loren’s abilities/training.

It’s a lot of fun, mainly thanks to the interplay of the characters’ personalities. Only thing I can complain about is the localization. This is a series that would’ve greatly benefited from leaving the honorifics alone instead of trying to translate them; each “Mr. Loren” causes physical pain.
