  • Null Peta & Space Battleship YAMATO – STAR BLAZERS 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi

Posted on February 9, 2021 12:22 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

A short, 5-min episode series that presents itself as a comedy should probably avoid trying to instill any kind of moral values. Null Peta disagrees. Here is a show that attempts to mine comedy from not only having to put up with a overbearing, naggy older sister… but actively wanting to subsume your life to her desires even if it kills you. Especially if it kills you. It’s infuriating on every level, particularly when it tries for drama/pathos near the end.

As a follow-up to Yamato 2199, Ai no Senshi-tachi is a pretty much complete disappointment. It has all the negatives of a Yamato work (idiotic character behavior, random plot developments, space mysticism, toxic nationalism/hero worship, etc.) without any of the surprisingly engaging combat encounters 2199 pulled off. All of the battles here seem to both start and end in arbitrary manners with inconsistent power levels and destructive potential. They come across like empty setpieces.

  • Otome Game no Hametsu Flag shika nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei shite shimatta… & Lapis Re:LiGHTs

Posted on November 3, 2020 2:28 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

The show with the excessively long title (which can be more sensibly shorted to HameFura if you’re so inclined) is a slightly unconventional isekai variant in which the protagonist doesn’t actually have any notable abilities. Her lack of notable skill is, in fact, apparently the very reason all the other characters like her so much (well, that and the way she unconsciously steals all the character-specific romance events for herself). This presents a problem; there’s not much of a reason to root for someone who continually fails into success after all.

A slightly more conventional ‘magical academy’ series, Lapis Re:Lights starts out featuring some pretty generic character behavior and event developments. Unilaterally forcing Tiara into Rosetta’s group at the beginning was completely unnecessary and leaves a bad taste, while the eventual idol reveal in the second episode (which almost completely invalidates the setting’s premise) is just soul-crushingly banal. I couldn’t bring myself to go any further.

Then there’s also Honzuki no Gekokujou, another reincarnation-based fantasy isekai with an unpowered protagonist, which I long suspected wouldn’t appeal to me based on said protagonist being a child. A suspicion that turned out to be completely accurate.

  • Kanata no Astra: ASTRA LOST IN SPACE & WATASHI, NOURYOKU wa HEIKINCHI dette Itta yo ne!

Posted on September 2, 2020 2:59 pm by Offkorn Comment

A bit of a rarity these days, Kanata no Astra happens to be a completed adaptation of a completed work. And though not quite a mixed genre series (the comedy is absolutely the main focus) it treats its dramatic aspects with all due seriousness without cutting any corners or using any cheap tricks. Really the only thing negative I can say about it is that there’s one plot twist too many; the overarching reasoning behind why they found a ship where they did ends up on just the wrong side of unbelievable… particularly when combined with the habitability of the various planets they visit.

The pseudo-gag comedy Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne! is unfortunately far less well structured. It combines 4th-wall breaking parody, 4th-wall breaking exposition, reaction humor, ecchi humor, serious drama, not-so-serious drama, action of both the sincere and not-so-sincere variety, and (at the very end) battle shounen elements. It is, simply put, a mess. They needed to either drop the dramatic/sincere bits or drop the nanomachine-related commentary and 4th-wall breaks, as the two do not mix well at all. Hell, even just sticking to one or two varieties of comedy might have resulted in something less scattershot.

  • Märchen Mädchen

Posted on July 3, 2019 12:53 pm by Offkorn Comment

Socially awkward and as a result involuntarily a bit of a loner, Hazuki Kagimura spends much of her time engrossed in books of all kinds. One day after suddenly discovering a strange book in her possession she stumbles across someone who appears to be a mage straight out of one of her stories. Consumed by curiosity, she ends up following the mysterious girl through a portal leading to a fantasy world where those known as ‘mädchen’ learn different sorts of magic sourced from a variety of fairy tales.

A schoolgirl comedy with secondary action elements. It features occasional bursts of ecchi and a streak of drama threaded throughout.

  • Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur

Posted on June 30, 2019 1:05 pm by Offkorn Comment

The legendary sword Excalibur grants anyone it deems worthy incredible power and bestows upon them the title of ‘Arthur’. However… its standards are quite low and soon the world was overrun with many different varieties of Arthur to the point that reality itself became distorted. So now it falls to a team of six different Arthurs to track down and destroy a million Excaliburs of the past in the hopes of restoring the present to its natural state.

A parody-heavy comedy with secondary action elements, a moderate level of ecchi, and occasional bits of drama. Each televised episode also includes an episode of Jakusansei Million Arthur following the credits.

The Taishou period is drawing to a close and Japanese society is in the midst of change as Western influences continue to take hold. Girls are still sheltered in many ways, and so when Akiko Ogasawara asks her friend Koume Suzukawa to help create a baseball team for their all-girls school they quickly run up against resistance to the idea on multiple fronts.

A mix of schoolgirl club comedy and baseball-themed sports shounen with a small amount of romance and a few pockets of drama.

  • Bermuda Triangle: Colorful Pastorale

Posted on April 2, 2019 11:30 am by Offkorn Comment

Far beneath the sea’s surface lies the nation of Maggallanica, a nation much like any other despite being primarily inhabited by mermaids. Follow the daily adventures of five such young women as they explore the streets and various locales of the remote village of Parrel.

A lightly comedic slice of life series. No familiarity with the Cardfight!! Vanguard franchise, of which it’s a spin-off, is required to watch it.

  • Mini Toji

With the great aradama defeated, daily life has now returned to something resembling normal for the various Toji Miko. Can a day in the life of a sword-wielding spirit hunter ever truly be considered normal though?

A sequel to Toji no Miko featuring chibi artwork and a focus on comedic interactions. Although not plot-driven, having seen that first is advised.

In a time of great strife, three heroes shall be entrusted with the souls of the three great sovereigns who created the world in order to bring light to the darkness which has engulfed the land. That time is now.

A warfare-centric action series with a moderate amount of comic relief and a few dramatic elements. It’s a retelling of Romance of the Three Kingdoms with the cast represented by miniature Gundams.
