  • The Brilliant Healer’s New Life #3 & Rebuild World IV

Posted on June 15, 2024 5:04 pm by Offkorn Comment

The third Yami Healer novel starts off with a summer festival and then follows it up with a story centered on a temporary new love interest. While neither is handled badly, and I’m impressed at the author’s relative restraint regarding the permanent love interest count, there’s not really any variation in the character dynamics. It’s an average romcom harem through and through.

Rebuild World IV is the seventh book in the series and has a similar issue to the above novel; a limited range of character behavior. While the setting’s been interesting enough to get me to stick around this long, I believe this will be where I drop it since the Akira/Alpha interactions and supporting characters’ baffled suspicion are becoming prohibitively repetitive.

  • Rebuild World III & OTHERSIDE PICNIC

Posted on January 25, 2024 1:53 am by Offkorn Comment

The third part of Rebuild World is once more composed of two novels… two novels which don’t really have much in common plotwise. What they do share are some pretty painfully idiotic scenes involving the Druncam hunters to the point I hope to never see them again.

Urasekai Picnic is notable for being something of a collection of sequential short stories rather than a conventional novel. Sadly, while the protagonist being a low-key psychopath is an interesting choice, both main characters are pretty dumb with a tendency to keep reacting to things as if they had never encountered supernatural phenomenon before. Not sure at this point if I’m going to follow it any further.

  • Disillusioned Adventurers #3 & Rebuild World II

The third Ningen Fushin novel unsurprisingly has a bit of a focus on the priest. More surprising is that it’s pretty much entirely focused on story/character development without any hobby-based sidetracking, leaving me cautiously optimistic for future installments.

Like the first, the second Rebuild World volume is split into two books (English titles: Users of the Old Domain & Revengeware). Both are very heavy on action while not really doing much to advance toward the presumed end goal, although we do get confirmation that Alpha’s goal will be detrimental to a large number of people along with evidence she’s not the only one working toward it.

So this volume is mostly about providing an excuse to boost the protagonist’s power/resources while introducing a secondary political background plotline that will almost certainly cause complications down the line.

  • Rebuild World & I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage

The Alluring Specter & Crazy, Reckless, and Rash are the first two books in the Rebuild World series, which uses an unconventional numbering scheme in addition to the rarity of having individual titles for each novel.

Basically they chart the path of a street urchin on his way to becoming an established mercenary as he’s guided by an AI with unknown (though almost certainly nefarious) goals through a post-apocalyptic wasteland. It’s hard sci-fi for the most part with hints of potential romance/harem elements down the line and nothing much to complain about.

The first Moto Saikyou no Kenshi wa Isekai Mahou ni Akogareru book meanwhile is a more common example of a fantasy-to-fantasy overpowered protagonist reincarnation isekai. Said protagonist is overpowered thanks to retaining god-level swordsmanship from his previous life, while the isekai label appears to just be there to provide an excuse for in-character exposition about the setting.

Although nothing to write home about, it doesn’t have any glaring issues and should be entertaining enough for fans of the genre.
