Sword Gai: The Animation

Not all swords are created equal. Some have become so soaked in dark intent they develop wills of their own, wills that can overwhelm and supplant those of their wielder to become Busoma. Gai Ogata was born holding such a sword, and after an accident results in the loss of his arm that same sword is fashioned into a prosthetic limb… a limb which grants great power at the cost of forcing him into perpetual combat against the Busoma.

An action-drama with a small philosophical streak which eventually adopts a few battle shounen aspects.

After finally recovering the use of her legs following an accident that killed her family, Aiko Tachibana is suddenly confronted by the fact that not only is her body not her own, but that her mother and brother might still be alive. Now she must follow Yuuya Kanzaki and a special forces team deep into the heart of a biological disaster zone in the hopes of reclaiming her family and stopping the expansion of the mindless self-replicating organism responsible for the accident.

An action-drama with an even split between both action and drama, of varieties both personal and political, and a bit of mystery.

While following the trail of the vigilante killer ‘B’, the officers of the Royal Investigation Service become entangled in the machinations of the secret organization Market Maker. They are looking for B for reasons of their own and seek to lure him out of hiding with elaborate crimes, crimes which few besides the eccentric Keith Flick can see the truth of.

Part mystery thriller and part sci-fi action with a moderate streak of comic relief.

During the third Holy Grail War the Grail was lost due to outside interference, only to suddenly resurface sixty years later in the hands of a group of loosely allied magi who proclaim their independence from the Clock Tower association. A proclamation marking the start of a new Holy Grail War, one in which two teams consisting of seven master-servant pairings fight to the death in order to have their wishes come true.

An action-drama with a touch of ecchi, comedy, and romance. It’s a stand-alone story taking place in an alternate reality where the events of Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night never occurred.

DEVILMAN: crybaby

Mass disappearances, outbreaks of violence, and people with mysteriously high physical ability are all on the rise. Ryou Asuka believes this to be the work of devils who have secretly infiltrated society, and to both prove it and eliminate the threat he decides to have his old friend Akira Fudou become host to one of the most powerful devils in existence.

A hyper-violent drama with a large quantity of sexual content and occasional early splashes of absurdist comic relief. It’s a completely new adaptation of the source material and does not require having seen anything else.

Children of the Whales: Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau

Adrift in a seemingly endless sea of sand, the people of the ‘Mud Whale’ live and die on their ship-like island with no knowledge of how their existence began. The elders of the society know more than they let on however, and when a mysterious girl is found on a passing piece of land they begin to ask her questions related to the ‘mainland’. Overhearing this, the young archivist Chakuro realizes that she just might be the key to unlock the mystery surrounding his world.

A mystery-tinged drama focused on the trials and tribulations of a small isolated community. Though it becomes a war drama for a while, the majority of the focus is on social conflicts.

Hyakkaou Private Academy, a prestigious school for the elite that bases its internal hierarchy on gambling prowess with the losers becoming slaves to the whims of the victors. Into this closed environment walks Yumeko Jabami, who gambles purely for the thrill of it and actively begins to shake up the established power structure.

A gambling-centric show specializing in cheating methods and over the top drama with a noticeable amount of yuri-themed ecchi.

Far in the future humans are forced to live in scattered pockets of a city they’ve lost their connection with, hiding from the autonomous machines which seek to eliminate them. A group from one such hidden village stumbles across a mysterious lone wanderer while out scavenging for food: His name is Killy, and he’s searching for someone with the net terminal gene in order to restore the city to human control.

A fully self-contained action movie that uses cell-shaded CGI.

After being stabbed to death in a train station, Masaru Katou finds himself transported to a sparse room filled with several other people. There it’s explained that his old life is over and in this new life he must hunt down and kill aliens in an elaborate death game.

A full-CGI sequel to the 2004 TV series Gantz that can be viewed as a stand-alone story. It mostly consists of gore-heavy action scenes, though there’s also some drama and a small amount of romance mixed in.

Ajin: Immortal beings able to manifest powerful avatars made of dark particles. Hunted by the government for research purposes and vilified as inhuman monsters, a group of Ajin come together to form a terrorist organization with visions of forcing reform. Meanwhile, an otherwise normal student recently revealed to be an Ajin finds himself on the run from both groups.

The first half of the show is an action drama focused on Kei Nagai’s capture and eventual flight from government agents, with Satou’s terrorist actions providing the backdrop. The second half however transitions into something closer to an agency thriller, with the conflict between special forces and the terrorists taking center stage.
