With Akira Inugami believed dead, Akiko makes her way to Alaska with Jin’s assistance. On the way back from the airport however, he receives a message from a mysterious woman indicating that Akira may yet still be alive.

An occasionally graphic action-drama with a minor romance subplot and small amount of nudity. Note that it begins in the middle of the story and only provides brief flashbacks to earlier events.

The Chikusei-sou dorm at first glance seems like any other university dorm, yet it holds a secret that only the landlord and Haiji Kiyose are aware of: It’s in fact a training area for the school’s track and field club. So the other nine residents are understandably shocked when Haiji reveals they’ll all be expected to participate in the upcoming Hakone Ekiden marathon… and it will require more than a little persuasion to get their diverse assortment of personalities on the same page.

A combination of sports shounen and character drama with a large amount of comic relief.

  • Some Movies and a TV Show

Posted on March 21, 2019 10:53 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

    Movies:

    • Quantum of Solace – The argument that it’s ‘overly violent’ for a James Bond film is patently absurd; most of the action is practically slapstick. The oddly bloodless and occasionally longwinded action sequences aside there’s not really anything to complain about here.
    • Skyfall – I see why people consider this a return to form for the franchise, but I don’t view that a good thing. The movie’s still decent, but it comes across like an imitation of days long past.
    • Spectre – Whomever’s responsible for all the extended chase scenes really needs to lay off them for a bit. That aside, what struck me was its anti-surveillance theme. Though clearly meant to be a criticism/warning I can’t shake the feeling that introducing surveillance states into fiction normalizes them. Oh, and despite what some may have claimed, there’s nothing even remotely confusing about the plot developments.
    • Fantastic Beasts: And Where to Find Them – Considering my acute dislike of Harry Potter I’m not sure what possessed me to watch this movie. The atmospheric connection between the two is hard to miss and would be bad enough alone, but far worse is how the protagonist here has the air of a child molester.

    TV Show:

    • Constantine – In the mood to re-watch the Constantine movie for some reason, I ended up reminded that a TV version of the franchise had been created and decided to check that out instead. While some of the episodes are a bit too episodic (and the non-English spellcasting scenes aren’t sold even remotely well) overall this is an often fun and consistently engaging series with perfectly fine production values.

In a time of great strife, three heroes shall be entrusted with the souls of the three great sovereigns who created the world in order to bring light to the darkness which has engulfed the land. That time is now.

A warfare-centric action series with a moderate amount of comic relief and a few dramatic elements. It’s a retelling of Romance of the Three Kingdoms with the cast represented by miniature Gundams.

What happens to a hero who’s outlived their usefulness? Unfortunately, in many cases they end up either abandoned or sentenced to death. The Hero Retirement Agency seeks to change that harsh reality by transporting them to Earth and teaching them how to live as normal people.

A character drama with a large amount of comic relief and minor ecchi aspects.

  • Tsukumogami Kashimasu

With fire being a common hazard in Edo, residents often choose to rent furniture, clothing, or decorations instead of buying them outright. Okou and Seiji run one such lending shop which has developed a reputation for being uncommonly experienced with matters involving tsukumogami.

A partly episodic period drama with slight romance, mystery, and educational elements alongside a large amount of comic relief.

With the long war finally over, those who defined themselves through military service must now find a new path… a task especially difficult for someone who was raised to be nothing more than a weapon. This is the position Violet Evergarden now finds herself in, and with the last words of her cherished someone still echoing in her head she decides to try her hand as a ghostwriter; to give shape to others’ feelings in the hopes of eventually understanding her own.

A post-war character drama with occasional splashes of comic relief, framed with romance elements and peppered with wartime flashbacks.

As it turns out Arato is somehow related to her creation, and her appearance entangles him in the often violent intrigues surrounding these ‘Lacia-class’ humanoid interface devices.

She instead ends up working there to help out the grandson of the shop’s owner, who handles most of the day-to-day business of appraisal and has come to be known around town as “Holmes-san” in part for his ability to get to the heart of any questionable situation.

It’s been two years since Ouriku began his training, and now he and a number of other disciples return to the mortal realm for the next phase of their enlightenment. There they are meant to learn to live among the common people… but what Ouriku finds in his hometown forces him to take on a more active role.

A continuation of Hoshikuzu-tachi no Utage which primarily focuses on community building. It has to be watched after that in order to understand the character behavior.
