  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE #3 & My Magical Career at Court #5

Posted on September 27, 2024 12:10 pm by Offkorn Comment

The third Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei book mostly concerns itself with the recruitment of additional crafters so that, eventually, the protagonist doesn’t have to do everything himself. Aside from that… there’s also a bit of character development for his fiancée.

Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru‘s fifth entry busies itself with the establishment of Luke’s new taskforce and Noel growing into her role as a superior officer. Unfortunately, we once again come to the cusp of romantic progression only to have it snatched away at the very last moment (the novel ends on a cliffhanger). Which is annoying enough that I don’t think I’m going to follow it any further.

The second Savage Fang Ojousama novel is 90% school life (a culture festival) with the rest being a quick boss fight. It’s kind of ‘meh’ all things considered and I’m leaning toward dropping the series here.

Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru‘s fourth installment ends up having zero romantic development as the protagonist rationalizes the previous novel‘s confession away as a declaration of bromance. Fortunately, there is some notable development in other areas and the various character interactions remain amusing.

  • Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #6 & My Magical Career at Court #3

Free Life Fantasy remains perplexingly readable despite its sixth installment essentially being just an extended blog post. Like, why would anyone care about a fictional character’s upcoming crafting plans and daily grinding regimen? Yet somehow it continues to work.

The third Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru novel is basically a tournament arc in which the protagonist shows off her freakish adaptability. The elves at the end of the previous novel turned out to be a misdirection, as there’s still no explanation for why she has this superhuman ability, and it looks like there will be actual romantic development in the next book… assuming her impressive level of self-delusion doesn’t kick it up a notch.

The second Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru novel showcases the source of the protagonist’s power; namely her ability to endlessly adapt to whatever situation she finds herself in. Of course why she has that ability is still a mystery, but considering where the book ends it seems likely it’s related to elves in some manner.

Speaking of elves, I had held off on continuing the Tensei shite High Elf ni Narimashita ga, Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita series after some reservations about some foreshadowing at the end of the first book. Fortunately, the child character doesn’t stay a child for long and fairly quickly moves off in a different direction. So for the most part the series remains a solo journey through various societies that get influenced both directly and indirectly by the protagonist’s whims.

It’s certainly nothing fancy, and there’s an issue with repetitious exposition, yet I’m still looking forward to future installments.

The first Black Madougushi Guild o Tsuihou sareta Watashi, Oukyuu Majutsushi toshite Hirowareru novel (English subtitle: Living the Dream After My Nightmare Boss Fired Me from the Mages’ Guild!) turned out to be an incredibly cute action-romance. The central characters are all great and the comedy style works well. That said, I can see the protagonist’s obliviousness to her friend’s romantic intentions becoming an issue if dragged out too long.

Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s ninth entry introduces us to the last of the major goddesses, shows off the protagonist’s final form, and finally brings the moon priestess into the harem. Lot of other stuff as well. It’s remarkably dense.
