  • The SAGA of TANYA THE EVIL #12 & The Hero Laughs While Walking the Path of Vengeance #6

Posted on September 20, 2023 12:30 am by Offkorn Comment

While waiting for the twelfth Youjo Senki novel to get translated I happened to notice that there was a rather massive gap between it’s Japanese release date and a potential continuation. Fortunately the thirteenth finally showed up last month so it looks like an indefinite hiatus has been avoided.

Regardless, this one is fairly self-contained and takes place almost entirely in Ildoa. To be honest there doesn’t seem to be much point to it as the action seems set to return right back to the Eastern front. Conquest for conquest’s sake which… may actually have been the point. Not sure if I’m going to jump right into the follow-up when/if it’s translated or wait several years until the next arc is complete before grabbing all of them at once.

I’d previously had misgivings about the direction the sixth Nidome no Yuusha book was heading. Fortunately, for the most part, it manages to pull the gamble off. There are certainly some issues with the sci-fi elements and I’m not thrilled by the sibling complex but all-in-all it ends up a solid continuation.

I find myself morbidly fascinated about where exactly a harem composed entirely of yanderes will end up. I certainly don’t see any sort of happy ending in the cards.

The second Nise Seijo book is much like the first. No particular surprises here beyond that it looks like the next entry will cover the last parts of the game’s timeline… potentially being the series’ conclusion.

Maseki Gourmet‘s second novel is also more of the same. That’s most definitely not a positive in this case however, and the character interactions in particular are just purestrain cringe to the point I don’t see any reason to follow it further.

  • A Wild Last Boss Appeared! #1-3 & Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter #9

Posted on September 15, 2023 9:30 am by Offkorn Comment

The Yasei no Last Boss ga Arawareta! series is sort of in the middleground between Leadale and Neta Character Tensei toka Anmari da!. It’s got a more legible writing style than the former without any of the problematic fetishes of the latter.

Sadly it trips up where the protagonist is concerned. Despite having partially merged with their character’s personality (an unapologetic warlord), they’re painfully confrontation-adverse to the point of exasperation. It ends up a total waste of the overpowered trope.

Also on the dropped list, with the release of it’s ninth entry, is Koujo Denka no Kateikyoushi. The breathless fawning has just gotten to be too much and the author is apparently utterly incapable of reigning in the number of love interests.

  • Hollow Regalia #2 & Let This Grieving Soul Retire! #1-2

Posted on August 31, 2023 10:56 am by Offkorn Comment

Looks like I’ll be dropping Utsuro naru Regalia with this second entry. I’ve had my fill of naïve bleeding heart ‘heroes of justice’ who can’t understand the consequences of their actions… and certainly don’t want to read about one as the main heroine.

Nageki no Bourei wa Intai shitai ~Saijaku Hunter ni Yoru Saikyou Party Ikuseijutsu~ is a series in the same vein as Kage no Jitsuryokusha, with key differences being that the protagonist is relatively weak instead of overpowered and highly values his party members and clanmates instead of constantly dismissing them. My only complaint so far is regarding the rather frequent “I want to barf” statements, which thankfully fall off a bit in the second novel.

  • Mushoku Tensei #24 & I’M not the HERO!

Posted on August 25, 2023 3:33 am by Offkorn Comment

As expected the twenty-fourth Mushoku Tensei entry mostly focuses on setting the stage for the final battle. Although it does feature a remarkably effective pre-emptive attack toward the end that makes you wonder just what the point of all that earlier build-up was.

The Shujinkou ja Nai! series is another ‘reincarnated into a game world’ type of story with the odd distinction of having a protagonist who insists he’s not one despite the world doing everything in its power to mark him as such. It’s a vaguely interesting setup whose overall entertainment value will lie in how he ends up reacting to later events. Also perhaps of note is that while it doesn’t currently have any romance elements, there are hints it may advance in an unconventional pseudo-incest direction; the sister of the person our reincarnated protagonist has become has a brother complex despite knowing he’s been possessed by an outsider.

  • Housekeeping Mage #6 & Tensura #16

Posted on August 23, 2023 11:49 am by Offkorn Comment

The sixth Kasei Madoushi novel starts off with an adventure which pushes Alec to finally confront his past, moves on to reveal said past in full detail, and finishes up with a stand-alone adventure. Strangely… what would be infuriating in another novel (the repetition of events from slightly different angles) somehow works here.

Unsurprisingly Tensura‘s sixteenth novel busies itself with going over what happened in the previous battle and covering a bit of the aftermath/clean-up. It also however goes over what was happening in the Labyrinth toward the end of said battle, which kind of came out of nowhere with how important it ended up being.

There are some issues though. The first is that the author decided to ignore their editor’s warnings and started power ranking everyone with specific power levels in giant stat blocks… which is just total nonsense and a complete waste of space. None of those numbers mean anything! They’re completely arbitrary! The second is that it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, for no discernable reason, when the next book is apparently going to be a collection of short stories from various points of view. Why would you do such a thing unless you hate your readers?

May end up having to drop it if said short story compilation doesn’t cover any interesting events.

  • Private Tutor to the Duke’s Daughter #5-8

Posted on August 15, 2023 12:39 pm by Offkorn Comment

Koujo Denka no Kateikyoushi‘s second arc differs from the first in that the focus is far more on the girls than the protagonist and how they grow (or, in one particular case, regress) in his absence.

It’s also notable for ending each of the first three books on a cliffhanger, a pretty painful state of affairs I’m extremely glad I sidestepped by waiting for the whole thing to be released before reading.

Overall I’d say these four books end up a near-perfect continuation/expansion of the series with pretty much nothing to complain about besides the above cliffhangers. That said… I do not see any way this harem situation could possibly be resolved amicably. Even if we were to dismiss the younger girls as simple crushes, that still leaves four (two duke’s daughters, the merchant girl, and his foster sister) who aren’t particularly close with one another in the running.

  • Villainous Lord #2 & Mushoku Tensei #23

Posted on August 13, 2023 7:52 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Ore dake Level ga Agaru Sekai book is much like the first. It just sort of breezes along doing its own thing not really bothering with any sort of exposition.

Mushoku Tensei‘s twenty-third installment on the other hand waffles about quite a bit. Not much really happens in it beyond a meeting with the mercenaries from the protagonist’s days of impotence and the antagonist acquiring a final ally toward the end.

Looks like there will be one more book of setup and then the twenty-fifth will presumably focus on the showdown with the Man-God’s agents. With only one book left after that… I’m left somewhat concerned over how the series will end.

  • Death’s DAUGHTER #5 & Full Clearing Another World #8

Posted on August 11, 2023 8:08 am by Offkorn Comment

This fifth Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo book is the weakest of the series’ so far, primarily due some bizarre structuring: It starts off with the trip to Mekia (which despite taking up half the book feels quite short), follows that up with several interludes (a couple of which seem achronological), and then continues on into the invasion of the Empire for the last quarter.

There’s a distinct disjointedness about it and if the next book actually ends up the last I can’t see how all these dangling plot threads (the assassins, the other death god, Olivia’s death god, the semi-love triangle, Mekia’s goals, etc.) could possibly be resolved. I fear it will turn out like Fushi no Kami.

Shinja Zero no Megami-sama‘s eighth volume (English title: The Hero of Light and the Demon War) is more of what you’ve come to expect from the series. The protagonist continues to dispatch foes with what to outsiders looks like unfathomable power while being utterly hopeless with resolving the ever-growing harem situation he finds himself in.

I’ve been playing catch-up a bit with all the books that’ve piled up while I’ve been preoccupied with ESO. So rather than drawing these out two at a time I’m just going to stuff them all together.

Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru (As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I’ll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World) #1–2: This series is basically your standard ‘reincarnated into a world suspiciously identical to a game world’, just set in a fantasy world which happens to include some game-like traits. So the protagonist can take advantage of his gameplay knowledge but does not know anything about the world or people that inhabit it. Aside from some weird expectations in the beginning (no idea why he thinks a 3 year old would/should be an expert at warfare) it’s a perfectly acceptable time-waster.

I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage #3: I was greatly worried about the third Moto Saikyou no Kenshi novel’s switch to an academy setting, but it handles it surprisingly well while also revealing exactly why he can’t use magic and appears to have no skills. I ended up enjoying it even despite the inclusion one of my least favorite fantasy isekai tropes (game-like dungeon-delving).

The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles #4: Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s fourth entry comes across as a bit rushed. It’s basically an extended rescue mission that feels very much like a highlight reel instead of a proper story.

Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 SUPER CHEAT POWERS #10: The tenth Lv 2 kara Cheat book looks to be where I’ll have to stop; the queen’s attraction to the elementary schooler with the appearance of an adult takes a rather central place toward the end and it’s just incredibly cringy all-around. Also an issue is that it’s hinted Blossom’s relationship status will travel in a similar direction.
