  • Hunted & Solo Leveling #8

Posted on July 24, 2023 10:18 am by Offkorn Comment

It came as something of a surprise that Hunted was not the conclusion of Vanessa Nelson‘s Grey Gates series. No idea why I thought it was going to be a trilogy, but I did.

It’s pretty much as far from a conclusion as you can get, opening up the world in some questionable directions and leaning into the earlier hinted romance. Honestly it feels a bit like a stopgap, a stalling measure, as nothing is really resolved and only more questions are raised. It also stops sort of abruptly in an odd place. End result being that this is probably where I get off.

In a reverse of the above situation, the eighth Solo Leveling novel shockingly appears to be the series’ conclusion despite the wiki listing thirteen novels.

Weirdly enough the central conflict is resolved in the first few chapters with the rest devoted to an assortment of epilogue stories. It’s very strangely structured, sort of like they just lifted it wholesale from piecemeal webnovel form without any editing, but yet still somehow works for the most part. Assuming this actually is the end I’d classify the work as a pretty solid overpowered protagonist series with a slightly weak endgame.

  • The IDEAL SPONGER LIFE #9-12

Posted on June 10, 2023 1:10 pm by Offkorn Comment

My earlier misgivings turned out to be unfounded as very little focus is granted to the blonde girl in these four novels. Honestly… very little of anything gets any focus since not much of note occurs in them.

The northern princess is still in concubine limbo, his wife remains dead-set on making him take more concubines (the blonde girl still waiting in the wings), and there aren’t any developments to speak of besides some rather strong indications that the series wants to develop into a war drama of all things. The thirteenth book ~might~ finally result in the princess becoming an official concubine, but with the way things have gone recently I don’t trust the author not to drag it out further with church-related shenanigans.

  • The Case Files of Henri Davenforth

Posted on June 9, 2023 10:44 am by Offkorn Comment

A curious combination of police procedural and isekai (which eventually develops into a romance), Honor Raconteur‘s Case Files of Henri Davenforth series ends up remarkably entertaining for the most part.

Starting out being framed from Henri’s perspective, as time goes on more and more chapters are told from Jamie’s until by the ninth book (All in a Name) they’re more or less evenly split. While at times this can be a bit confusing it’s mostly a positive that introduces some welcome variety to what becomes a pretty standard story structure.

Each book generally has our protagonists running around for the first 75% or so chasing leads/clues that don’t really go anywhere, only to suddenly run across the antagonist kinda out of nowhere just before the end (sometimes literally, sometimes due to a spontaneous break in the case). So narrative isn’t really the strong point here. No, the character interactions are the main draw and it absolutely delivers on that front.

Only complaints would be Jamie’s constant pop culture references (I know people actually talk like that, but you’d think you’d tone it down after traveling to a different world where said culture doesn’t exist) and the rate of technological introduction speeding up in questionable directions within the later books. Why would you try to introduce modern TV to a fantasy-infused Victorian society? Like, that’s just pure demerits all the way down.

  • Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #3 & Min-Maxing My TRPG Build #6

Posted on June 6, 2023 7:06 am by Offkorn Comment

Free Life Fantasy Online’s third entry is much the same as the previous one: Roughly half’s devoted to game mechanic waffling, with a quarter focusing on food/cooking and the remaining quarter dealing with actual event development.

Simply put there are a lot of issues with this series, yet for some reason reading it doesn’t end up a chore. Not sure why, but I’ll likely keep following it until either the food elements begin to outweigh the game mechanic exposition or what few events there are develop in an unpleasant manner.

The sixth volume of TRPG Player ga Isekai Saikyou Build o Mezasu (which is the seventh book in the series) is almost wholly focused on the protagonist’s long awaited journey home. Which, due to his chronic bad luck, ends up peppered with multiple troublesome encounters alongside the temporary addition of a potential love interest. Everything is paced well, we finally get reunited with the supposed main heroine, and the short story at the end appears to be an apology for introducing the previous novel‘s heroine so late.

  • Fierce Heart, War Bound, & My Happy Marriage

Posted on May 31, 2023 10:41 am by Offkorn Comment

Tara Grayce‘s first two Elven Alliance books (Fierce Heart & War Bound) bring to mind the Elves of Lessa series in a few ways. This is a very different series however, with its main couple being surprisingly similar to one another and some rather central event developments that strain credulity.

Personally, I found it odd that both the protagonist and her love interest are so exceptionally considerate and understanding of each other despite having married (for political purposes) at almost literally first sight. Then there’s the whole ‘troll’ situation which doesn’t even remotely make any sense. Combined, these two issues make it rather difficult to drum up any interest in continuing the series.

A book with a similar issue, the first Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon entry also features a weirdly co-considerate pair of protagonists. This one’s problem is more in the subtext however: Our male love interest unilaterally rejects all bride candidates until a girl who acts even more subservient than your average servant shows up. It sort of underhandedly stigmatizes assertiveness.

  • Housekeeping Mage from Another World #5 & Death’s DAUGHTER and the Ebony BLADE #4

Posted on May 16, 2023 1:33 am by Offkorn Comment

The first two-thirds of Kasei Madoushi no Isekai Seikatsu‘s fifth entry are rather difficult to get through. For some reason the author decided the main plotline here would be idol-centric, which does not fit the setting at all (though to be fair they did make an attempt to camouflage it a bit). The last third however is quite good and provides some major advancements in the main couple’s relationship.

The fourth Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo novel is much like the third in that the battle focus is split between Mekia and Fernest’s forces. This entry mainly seems to be setting things up for the endgame with the upcoming follow-up looking like it will be the calm before the storm.

  • Magiford Supernatural City

Similar to how each of the Elves of Lessa books have the same type of romantic developments, each of K. M. Shea‘s Magiford trilogies share a similar story structure:

Book 1 has an underpowered young woman get entangled with an overpowered man, in Book 2 the protagonist becomes powerful in her own right and the two separate for some reason, then in Book 3 they become an established couple and overcome a persistent adversary.

Hall of Blood and Mercy is the first of these trilogies, doing a great job of introducing the setting without resorting to infodumps or reams of exposition. The only thing I can really criticize is how incredibly nonsensical the break-up in the second book is. Just a complete lack of logic to the point that the characters themselves don’t even try to defend it.

The second trilogy, Court of Midnight and Deception, builds on the groundwork lain by the previous one while suffering from a similar issue with the separation segment. Once again we have a decision that just completely lacks any sense, but at least in this case the characters get over it fairly quickly. Only other potential issue might be that many of the events in here lean toward the goofier side of things.

Finally we come to the Pack of Dawn and Destiny trilogy (since I’ve already talked about the Gate of Myth and Power one). This set of novels stands out for both switching up the formula a bit and being absolutely terrible. It switches things up by having the main couple already know each other from the beginning and essentially skipping over the separation event, while ending up the worst of the trilogies by far due to its overwhelming level of ridiculousness and poorly thought-out plot developments.

Fortunately, that third trilogy is pretty divorced from the other three (the series’ background conspiracy doesn’t even play an explicit roll in it) and can be safely skipped without issue.

  • The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles #2-3 & Mushoku Tensei #7-22

Posted on May 7, 2023 1:48 am by Offkorn Comment

Despite my earlier misgivings I decided to roll the dice on Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s continuation after all. Remarkably, the very issue I had with the first novel (the protagonist’s odd level of stupidity) was expressly addressed by the author in the second with the third basically staying the course. Makes me wonder if they got similar feedback to that effect during the original release. Regardless, it looks like I’ll be continuing to follow the series for a bit.

Originally I’d avoided reading the Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu series (English subtitle: Jobless Reincarnation) due to concerns that it would have a higher level of perversion than its Anime adaptation (since such adaptations usually tone that part down for a TV audience). As it turns out the fanservice level is pretty much the same, which is to say it’s certainly annoying but not quite at the deal-killing level.

The seventh novel picks up right from where the adaptation left off, making it a good place to jump in, and the author turned out to be pretty adept at storyline pacing. Most of the novels manage to work both as self-contained stories and parts of a greater whole, with only a couple being obviously incomplete (namely #16-17 and #20-21).

So overall it’s a pretty damn good series with the only real issues (aside from the splashes of perversion) being the protagonist’s frequent habit of second-guessing everything and the weird way he frames his anti-Man-God activities as if he’s working for a modern day corporation.

  • I Surrendered My Sword for a New Life as a Mage #2 & The Magic in this Other World is Too Far Behind! #1-7

Posted on May 3, 2023 10:08 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Moto Saikyou no Kenshi wa Isekai Mahou ni Akogareru book is a little odd in that it starts out as one thing only to loop back around to the beginning and become something else. That ‘something else’ being the prelude to an Academy storyline. Why? Why would a series that went in a relatively novel direction suddenly about-face into such a generic scenario?

I guess we’ll see how it handles it, but my expectations at this point are pretty low.

An earlier series by the author of Shikkaku kara Hajimeru Nariagari Madoushidou!, Isekai Mahou wa Okureteru! is a rather different beast. It’s much wordier (ponderous even at times) with only some of the character relationships and the technicality of the magic system feeling similar.

While I don’t actively dislike it, it takes a bit of effort to work through and doesn’t look like any continuation will appear any time soon. So I’ll be putting the remaining novels in the series on the backburner until a potential tenth is released.

The first Doukutsuou kara Hajimeru Rakuen Life: Bannou no Saikutsu Skill de Saikyou ni!? novel (English subtitle: Climbing to the Top with My Almighty Mining Skills!) is atrocious. There is not a single ounce of rhyme or reason to anything that occurs within it, starting from the very beginning when he’s ostracized for having a rare ability that everyone around actively refuses to research.

It only gets worse from there, as for no discernable reason he immediately begins finding new types ore that just so happen to possess the exact magical ability necessary to solve any issue that may arise. Can’t cast any magic because of a low mana pool? These tunnels are laced with thousands of kilograms of mana-expanding ore! Someone appears with a lifespan-shortening curse? Looks like this island contains ore that both dispels curses and extends your lifespan! It’s infuriating, and you’d probably be better off just reading/watching Isekai Nonbiri Nouka instead.

Kusushi no Majo desuga, Naze ka Fukugyou de Rikon Daikou shiteimasu meanwhile is a pretty standard ‘opposites attract’ semi-romance livened up with irreverent characters and a bit of a twist: The protagonist takes on requests to break off engagements/marriages, only for the couples to end up reconciling instead. It’s pretty fun.
