  • The KING’S QUEEN & The Elves of Lessa

Posted on April 25, 2023 8:20 am by Offkorn Comment

The conclusion to K. M. Shea‘s Gate of Myth and Power trilogy ends up quite good. All the important subplots are wrapped up and none of the developments feel particularly forced. There’s still the matter of the organization behind the antagonist, but that will presumably be addressed in later Magiford-related trilogies.

A work by the same author (unrelated to the above and set in a fantasy world), the Elves of Lessa trilogy (RED ROPE of Fate, ROYAL Magic, & The PRINCE’S BARGAIN) takes a particular romantic formula and applies it to three different couples across the span of a few years. While the oblivious love theme does get a bit old by the time you reach the end, each character has their own unique attributes and the background storyline manages to continue progressing apace.

It’s a remarkably engaging set of novels with a detailed setting and amusing character interactions… enough so that I may have to pick up the author’s other trilogies after all.

  • The Hero Laughs While Walking the Path of Vengeance a Second Time #1-5 & The Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary #8

Posted on April 21, 2023 9:20 am by Offkorn Comment

Nidome no Yuusha wa Fukushuu no Michi o Warai Ayumu is a series in the vein of Tate no Yuusha and Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi, just focused almost entirely on gruesome vengeance with not much in the way of sexual elements. There is a harem situation, but it’s a bit unique in that all the girls are some flavor of yandere.

Issues would be the not quite universal nature of the initial time reset (if others kept their memories it kind of undermines the whole premise), the vast majority of the third novel (which is mostly flashback), overuse of laughter-related onomatopoeia, and the cliffhanger ending of the fifth novel. It goes in an extremely unexpected direction there in one of the worst ways possible. Then again, it certainly hasn’t shied from torturing its protagonists alongside their enemies… so perhaps that isn’t quite as random as it seems.

Either way, it looks like the sixth novel will either make or break the series.

Speaking of cliffhangers, the eighth Kuitsume Youhei novel also happens to end on one, albeit one far less severe. It also feels a lot shorter than previous entries and honestly doesn’t really accomplish/add much of anything.

If the next book continues that trend I’m probably going to end up dropping it.

  • Chillin’ in Another World #9 & Full Clearing Another World #7

In the ninth installment, Lv 2 kara Cheat manages to continue balancing its feel-good nature against its couple of problematic relationships. This book’s a bit more focused on the blonde hero’s party than usual but is otherwise more of what you should have come to expect by now from the series.

The seventh Shinja Zero no Megami-sama novel picks up right where the previous one left off and proceeds along at a rather brisk pace. You get a power-up for both the protagonist and Aya, some focus on one of the scattered former classmates, and a bit of political intrigue alongside awkward harem antics.

  • Survival Strategies of a Corrupt Aristocrat & The GM has LOGGED IN #2

Posted on April 15, 2023 11:38 am by Offkorn Comment

There are several problems with the first Akutoku Kizoku no Seizon Senryaku novel, which I suppose you could say is somewhat similar to MobSeka.

Chief among them is the erratic protagonist; his personality flits around between cold-blooded schemer, hot-blooded shounen battler, clueless harem lead, and manic workaholic (his actions after becoming Jack not lining up with what’s shown of his history certainly doesn’t help). The end result being a product that feels more like a loosely connected web of scattered ‘great ideas’ than a proper story.

The second GM ga Isekai ni Login Shimashita installment just so happens to share that particular protagonist issue.

While the prequel was already going in some questionable directions, this one simply has no direction at all: Cringy relationship developments, cringy fanservice, combat scenes incorporating game elements from multiple (sometimes conflicting) genres, a new kingdom-building and ‘introduce modern concepts to a fantasy world’ focus, an expanded food focus, and no idea whether it wants to be a breezy overpowered protagonist series or a cliffhanging nailbiter.

Reading the Afterword, where the author proclaims the lead (who is literally invincible, has effectively infinite crafting materials, and can cast any spell or use any ability he wants) is “playing on hard mode”, it seems clear that there’s no hope of it ever getting any better.

  • ARIFURETA #13 & Arifureta After I-V

Posted on April 4, 2023 12:46 am by Offkorn Comment

The last of the main Arifureta novels starts out much like Tensura’s fifteenth novel; showing the battle going on outside the Sanctuary from multiple different perspectives.

That ends up taking quite some time, with most of the rest being spent on Hajime’s confrontation with Ehit… leaving little space for any kind of epilogue. So really, while this book serves as a solid enough conclusion to the Tortus conflict (and even Arifureta Zero due to the second epilogue) it’s less useful as a finale to Hajime’s and the other students’ story.

No, for that you’ll have to read on into the Arifureta After chapters which were started around the time the fifth novel was published and are still ongoing even now (with allegedly one more arc to go before completion). Although mainly urban fantasy, they cover the protagonists’ return to Earth and related continued adventures in rather expansive detail across multiple genres including some more fantasy and even a couple sci-fi arcs.

Only the unedited original web version is currently available however, so be prepared for a highly variable level of both quality and chronological progression. Some arcs are hilarious, others are painful, and very few of them occur in the order they were written.

Tentative chronological order for the various arcs (the one-offs are all over the place):

    School Festival Arc 1-3
    Shizuku Arc 1-4
    Tio Arc 1-17
    Tortus Travel Arc 1-60
    Brutal Hero Shia Arc 1-14

    Abyss Lord Arc 1-27
    Shia Arc 1-6
The Two At That Time 1-2

    Kouki Arc 1-18
Hero & Demon King Arc 1-8
Hero & Demon King Arc Sequel 1-8
School Trip Arc 1-3 (Mundane School Life 2-4)
Abyss Lord Chapter 3 Arc 1-24
As the Daughter of Demon King Arc 1-5
    Liliana Arc 1-5
    Fleur Knights Arc 1-3 (Chapters 294, 296, & 297)

  • Hollow Regalia & The Strange Adventure of a Broke MERCENARY #7

Posted on March 24, 2023 8:13 am by Offkorn Comment

The Utsuro naru Regalia series is apparently written by the same author as Strike the Blood. You wouldn’t know it from reading the first book (Corpse Reviver) though, as it bears no resemblance to that series… what it reminds me of instead with the military focus, post-apocalyptic setting, and dragon powers is God Eater.

A solid enough start all things considered.

The seventh Kuitsume Youhei novel meanwhile switches things up a little from the previous ones in the resolution department. The general outline is much the same however (which to me at least is a good thing), so don’t expect any surprises.

  • Green Gryphon & Obsidian Queen #4-5

Posted on March 13, 2023 1:52 pm by Offkorn Comment

The first book in JS Kennedy‘s Mackenzie Green series shares some remarkable similarities with Ilona Andrews first Kate Daniels novel. A key difference which prevents me from wanting to follow it any further though is that (what appears to be) the main love interest is arrogant in all the worst ways.

Shari L. Tapscott‘s last two Obsidian Queen novels (Creatures of Midnight & Queen of Aparia) manage to both resolve the love triangle, albeit in a rather overly convenient manner, and pretty much wrap up every loose end from earlier… also in a rather overly convenient manner. Not sure what I was expecting really, but to have basically everyone instantly accept the new status quo doesn’t feel quite right. Kind of anticlimactic with a somewhat rushed epilogue.

  • Dahlia in Bloom #6 & Enough with This Slow Life! I WAS REINCARNATED AS A HIGH ELF AND NOW I’M BORED

Posted on March 3, 2023 2:00 pm by Offkorn Comment

The sixth Madougushi Dahlia novel immediately gets (some of) the food rhapsodizing out of the way to introduce a semi-dramatic plotline focusing on making a particularly complex tool for her best friend. It also both closes up the loose ends with her ex-fiancé and puts the the seemingly slow romantic development in perspective; only about four months have passed since the start of the series.

The lengthily-titled Tensei shite High Elf ni Narimashita ga, Slow Life wa 120-nen de Akimashita is a bit misleading in its description. He does not actually abandon living a slow life, just slightly alters the magnitude of how slow it is; he has no trouble spending decades advancing his hobbies (blacksmithing, swordfighting, eating, and finally magic).

While it in general reminds of Kino no Tabi (with an actually powerful protagonist who can drive change), the timescale ends up the defining feature with this first book covering roughly thirty years. And I certainly hope it continues at that scale if for no other reason than the apparently impending introduction of a child character.

  • GATE OF MYTH AND POWER #1-2 & Obsidian Queen #1-3

Posted on February 24, 2023 4:37 am by Offkorn Comment

The King’s Captive and The King’s Shadow are the first two books in K. M. Shea‘s Gate of Myth and Power trilogy, a part of her larger Magiford Supernatural City universe. They remind me of a cross between the Hollows series and Fukushuu o Chikatta Shironeko wa Ryuuou no Hiza no Ue de Damin o Musaboru.

Fortunately, even not having read any of her previous books in the setting, these are easy to follow despite including quite a number of references to those earlier works. The characters are fun, the developments are entertaining enough, and the romance surprisingly does not come across as forced. Definitely interested in seeing how the trilogy concludes… but I’m not sure I’ll bother with any of the related trilogies.

Shari L. Tapscott‘s first three Obsidian Queen novels (Guild of Secrets, Princess of Shadows, & Knights of Obsidian) are interesting primarily due to the protagonist’s personality.

Generally in urban fantasy and/or paranormal romance the lead is either a scrappy underdog or ‘boringly’ average; these books however feature a high society heiress-type. The romantic (and other) developments are what you’d expect for the genre though, so if the novelty of a non-standard protagonist doesn’t grab you there won’t be much point in reading past the first entry.

  • APPARENTLY, Disillusioned ADVENTURERS will Save the World #2 & The Disowned Queen’s: Consulting Detective Agency

Posted on February 23, 2023 1:52 pm by Offkorn Comment

The second Ningen Fushin book ends up pretty heavily idol-centric, ultimately revealing where that influence came from: The setting is actually a post-apocalyptic Earth. There’s a gambling focus as well, but it’s mainly all about Nick’s issues. We’ll see how the third book goes… but if the idol content doesn’t drastically decrease I’m going to have to drop it.

Speaking of dropping things, I won’t be following Kandou sareta node Tanteiya Hajimemasu! past its first installment. The characters and romance are okayish for the most part (her living family are all scum), but the genealogy is sketchy (If she’s her grandmother’s blood relative, why is her father written as if he married into the family? If she was adopted by her grandmother, how can she have the imperial bloodline?) and I honestly just can’t stand the ‘Phantom Thief’ trope.
