  • Sen-Yoku-no-SIGRDRIFA & Machikado Mazoku

Posted on February 4, 2021 6:12 am by Offkorn Comment

Senyoku no Sigrdrifa (which has an excessively long subtitle I can’t be bothered to transcribe) is a strange series that I went into expecting something edgy. Instead, it’s more like one of those ‘girls as anthropomorphic weapons’ types of shows that mostly focuses on silliness and/or daily life outings.

While the drama present at the beginning of the first episode periodically returns over time, ultimately I feel it gets drowned out by the completely inappropriate ecchi content. Resulting in a series that’s far more difficult to watch than it should be based on technical quality alone.

Machikado Mazoku meanwhile is a school-life magical girl parody that actually manages to handle a comedic poverty theme competently. It’s a solid all-around series with nothing notable to complain about.

  • Majo no Tabitabi: THE JOURNEY OF ELAINA & Shachou, BATTLE no JIKAN Desu!: THE ANIMATION

Posted on January 24, 2021 12:17 pm by Offkorn Comment

Majo no Tabitabi caught me by surprise. Based on the description I was expecting something mostly laid-back and/or relaxing, yet it ended up having quite a bit of (remarkably well-animated) action alongside some significant dramatic twists and themes (episode 9 in particular stands out). It’s not a simple episodic travelogue, nor is it a generic ‘cute girls being cute’ comedy (though it takes elements from both)… it’s more a character study that’s not adverse to poking fun at itself.

After the surprising animation quality of the previous series I looked up the studio responsible only to discover that not only were they involved with SukaSuka, but they also happened to have made another series in 2020.

That series being Shachibato (which I had skipped over in my earlier scan through the Spring releases), a parody based off of a now defunct online RPG. It’s… okay I guess? Watchable as a distraction. There are some notable oddities (why are noncombatants brought into the dungeon?) and annoyances (the doormat protagonist’s altruism), but the animation is fine and it’s amusing more often than not.

  • Kanata no Astra: ASTRA LOST IN SPACE & WATASHI, NOURYOKU wa HEIKINCHI dette Itta yo ne!

Posted on September 2, 2020 2:59 pm by Offkorn Comment

A bit of a rarity these days, Kanata no Astra happens to be a completed adaptation of a completed work. And though not quite a mixed genre series (the comedy is absolutely the main focus) it treats its dramatic aspects with all due seriousness without cutting any corners or using any cheap tricks. Really the only thing negative I can say about it is that there’s one plot twist too many; the overarching reasoning behind why they found a ship where they did ends up on just the wrong side of unbelievable… particularly when combined with the habitability of the various planets they visit.

The pseudo-gag comedy Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne! is unfortunately far less well structured. It combines 4th-wall breaking parody, 4th-wall breaking exposition, reaction humor, ecchi humor, serious drama, not-so-serious drama, action of both the sincere and not-so-sincere variety, and (at the very end) battle shounen elements. It is, simply put, a mess. They needed to either drop the dramatic/sincere bits or drop the nanomachine-related commentary and 4th-wall breaks, as the two do not mix well at all. Hell, even just sticking to one or two varieties of comedy might have resulted in something less scattershot.

  • Tejina Senpai & ITAI no wa IYA nano de BOUGYORYOKU ni KYOKUFURI Shitai to OMOIMASU.

Posted on August 23, 2020 4:19 pm by Offkorn 1 Comment

The half-length episode series Tejina Senpai starts out as an amusing enough version of Ueno-san, only to run out of steam partway through and lean ever more heavily on lewdness as a crutch. The joke variety is also lacking and the additional two members that eventually get added to the club don’t really help much in that department (unless you’re a fan of inexplicable pseudo-incest).

Also a comedy, Bofuri takes the virtual fantasy land action-adventure aspects of Sword Art Online and combines them with a somewhat random style of reaction humor focusing on Mary Sue parody. Before the guild gets formed most of the amusement comes from the sharp contrast between Maple’s appearance/personality and fondness for unintentional brutality… and this part of the show works fantastically. Eventually however it leans too far into the ‘overpowered main character’ shtick to the point event developments become tiresome. Remarkably high-quality action scenes throughout though.

That’s the danger of parody: You run the risk of becoming the very thing you’re trying to laugh at.

  • SHINCHOU YUUSHA ~Kono YUUSHA ga ORE TUEEE Kuse ni SHINCHOU Sugiru~ & Hataage! Kemono Michi

Posted on August 19, 2020 1:53 pm by Offkorn 1 Comment

Shinchou Yuusha is an interesting series in that you can clearly see it’s an amalgam of earlier works, yet the fusion is pulled off competently enough to result in a consistent whole. The reaction-based comedy is stylistically identical to Konosuba‘s, but in content it’s quite different with a much greater focus on JRPG parody than sex/ecchi. Meanwhile it also has a Goblin Slayer-like stoically single-minded main character and splashes of similar gory drama.

The combination never comes across as forced, with the one seamlessly blending into the other.

After that somewhat surprising success story, it seemed like a good idea to try another series (strike while the iron’s hot and all that). Which is where Hataage! Kemono Michi comes in. Also a comedic isekai with a… monomaniac central character the two seemed like they might complement one another. And despite this being more ecchi-centric they actually do. There’s no genre shifts here though; it’s pure comedy.

As a sidenote: I didn’t realize these two aired at the same time when deciding what to watch after Shinchou Yuusha. It’s strange that shows with such a similar theme (and I’m not talking about them both being isekai) got scheduled in the same season.

  • Han-Gyaku-Sei Million Arthur

Posted on June 30, 2019 1:05 pm by Offkorn Comment

The legendary sword Excalibur grants anyone it deems worthy incredible power and bestows upon them the title of ‘Arthur’. However… its standards are quite low and soon the world was overrun with many different varieties of Arthur to the point that reality itself became distorted. So now it falls to a team of six different Arthurs to track down and destroy a million Excaliburs of the past in the hopes of restoring the present to its natural state.

A parody-heavy comedy with secondary action elements, a moderate level of ecchi, and occasional bits of drama. Each televised episode also includes an episode of Jakusansei Million Arthur following the credits.

Long ago on the island of Naral there was an evil demon lord who was eventually defeated by a brave hero. Unfortunately the demon lord could not be permanently killed, and so a cycle began in which a new hero would arise to defeat her whenever she reappeared. This time however something went awry. Instead of being sealed the demon lord was instead transported several years into the past… giving her an unexpected chance to prevent the hero from becoming a hero.

A blend of schoolgirl daily life comedy and fantasy RPG parody. It also includes minor action and yuri-themed romance elements.

Enamored of violence and destruction, Yao Sakurakouji decides to join the Miami police force in the hopes of participating in gunfights and car chases. There she’s partnered with the police chief’s daughter Lu Amano, a reserved and no-nonsense officer, and together they set out to clean up the streets by taking out assorted criminals.

A mostly episodic action comedy with a moderate amount of ecchi. The comedy style is a mix of slapstick, absurd situations/reactions, and a variety of different parodies.

Following a crash landing on Earth, the loss of the Durandal sends Subaru into severe cockpit withdrawal. Can he manage to survive long enough to reunite with the Tiramisu?
