With Akira Inugami believed dead, Akiko makes her way to Alaska with Jin’s assistance. On the way back from the airport however, he receives a message from a mysterious woman indicating that Akira may yet still be alive.

An occasionally graphic action-drama with a minor romance subplot and small amount of nudity. Note that it begins in the middle of the story and only provides brief flashbacks to earlier events.

Excited to finally be a high school student, Eriko Takahashi and her friends sneak onto the school grounds a day early to explore. What they find is that in many ways an all-girls school can end up far worse than a co-ed arrangement.

    A heavy-ecchi schoolgirl comedy.

24 and single, Ekoda does her best to navigate both relationship trouble and an assortment of everyday pitfalls.

A collection of gag comedy segments and daily life short stories. Each features a different art style and voice actor, and nearly all feature nudity of some form. Note that ~23 minutes of each episode consists of live-action behind the scenes interviews.

  • Alita: Battle Angel & Captain Marvel

Posted on March 13, 2019 8:00 am by Offkorn 1 Comment

The live-action Alita movie is pretty bad in ways fairly common to Anime adaptations: Spontaneous romance, questionable character behavior, and suspect plot developments. Then it decides to throw in some of the more eye-rolling tropes from superhero origin stories (“I know kung-fu!“, only worse) as a bonus. The action scenes at least are engaging for the most part, though that’s certainly not enough to outweigh the cringe-worthy performances (Zapan‘s is the only decent one, and even he goes to shit at the end) and face-palming events.

Captain Marvel is an actually competently constructed adaptation comparatively. Though not without problems (most notably any scene designed to evoke sadness/sympathy) it’s a consistently entertaining mixture of action, comedy, 90’s references, and self-discovery with even the most minor characters getting a brief chance to shine. One aspect which could be taken either way is how events progress/develop at a brisk pace over a short timeframe; on the one hand this keeps you engaged with what’s happening, but on the other it makes the close Danvers-Fury friendship come across as pretty unnatural.

The take-away here is that I’m definitely not watching any potential Alita sequels in the theater (where skipping through painfully awkward scenes isn’t an option), while I just might end up going to see Avengers: Endgame (which ties directly into Marvel‘s post-credits scene).

  • Kamen no Maid Guy

Posted on January 10, 2019 6:03 am by Offkorn Comment

With only six months left before Naeka Fujiwara inherits her family’s vast fortune, her grandfather decides to hire two combat maids as a ward against possible assassination attempts: Fubuki, a young woman skilled in ninja techniques, and Kogarashi, a hulking cyborg with few social graces. Though both are effective at subduing potential enemies, Kogarashi in particular often causes just as much trouble for Naeka as he prevents.

A heavy-ecchi comedy fond of slapstick humor and breast-related jokes.

Working as a professional relief pitcher for the Toyko Spiders, Natsunosuke Bonda constantly worries about the comparatively low amount of money he makes. An injury could sideline him at any moment and at age 26 he doesn’t have much time left before hitting the dreaded age cutoff makes it difficult to keep playing. With this in mind he does the only thing he can to increase his career statistics: Obsessively research any players he might have to pitch against.

An often comedic daily life series, focused on baseball’s business and professional aspects, with a number of educational segments threaded throughout. Note that the second half is more story-driven and introduces a few romance elements.
