  • ULTIMATE TRUTHS & MAGICAL GIRL: RENDING NIGHTMARE

Posted on April 16, 2025 1:17 pm by Offkorn Comment

Coming as something of a shock after the disappointment of the sixth novel, Shawn Wilson‘s seventh Ultimate Level 1 novel is quite good. He somehow managed to sidestep the issues caused by the protagonist’s sudden exponential growth relative to his teammates while expanding the scope of the main plotline.

Crystal Genocide turned out to indeed be the start of a new series, and RavensDagger‘s follow-up draws heavily on the setting for the Stalker video games. So heavily that I’m kind of amazed it was able to be published… though I suppose it could be argued that it’s actually Roadside Picnic‘s setting. Regardless, if you liked that first novel this one’s quite similar in structure and character behavior.

  • Baba & DEAD TIRED III

I had some rather high expectations going into Baba, the first of a new series of stand-alone stories, after having greatly enjoyed the authors‘ White Mage series. And shockingly enough it fully delivered; the book is a fantastic combination of unrestrained vengeful brutality and assorted emotional developments.

The third of RavensDagger‘s Dead Tired books focuses mainly on visiting/conquering the various settlements in the Ashen Wastes with a subfocus on the limpet’s rise to a leadership position. It’s much like the prequels, so if you got this far there’s no reason not to continue on through this one as well.

  • LEVER ACTION & INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH MAGIC

Posted on March 3, 2024 3:07 am by Offkorn Comment

To my great surprise Lever Action turned out to be a perfectly normal fantasy/mecha-infused western. Unlike RavensDagger‘s other books I’ve read, there’s practically no comedy here and events are solidly grounded.

I can see why some people might think Macronomicon is a Brandon Sanderson alt; the massive output, the style of character banter, and technically-inclined world building all have parallels. Their first Industrial Strength Magic novel is a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy action-comedy with some relatively subtle romance aspects that look to be developing into a polyamorous love triangle. Both the complex setting and occasionally caustic character interactions are particular stand-outs, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing the series.

  • ALL I GOT IS THIS STAT MENU & MAGICAL GIRL: CRYSTAL GENOCIDE

Posted on February 20, 2024 11:07 am by Offkorn Comment

The All I Got is This Stat Menu series, by J.J. Ackerknecht, is interesting for not being escapist. While the protagonists do almost always win, it’s almost never without significant cost; while they get free power from a leveling system, leveling is both restricted and capped fairly low besides; though they save the world, the various ‘old world’ authorities tend to be shortsighted/selfish assholes who marginalize them.

It’s a highly well-balanced mix of elements that works incredibly well… mostly. The one discordant note is the central romance, which feels very much tacked on, as though the author only included it because it was expected. On a more personal note I was incredibly aggravated by the way the main protagonist instantly caved to the unreasonable demands of yet another power-mad control freak at the end of the third book (only saving grace is that it doesn’t look like that situation will survive contact outside the Sol system).

RavensDagger‘s Magical Girl Crystal Genocide novel has the same energy as Dead Tired without any of the intentionally bad dad jokes. Which is to say that it’s fantastic in all respects. Particularly notable is that it works perfectly well as either a stand alone story or the start of a new series.

  • DEAD TIRED & Vigor Mortis

Posted on January 22, 2024 10:59 am by Offkorn Comment

RavensDagger’s Dead Tired series is an interesting mix of tabletop RPG elements, cultivation, and dad jokes… with the dad jokes (e.g. bad puns for miles) being by far the weakest part. The strongest aspect, which handily carries the series, is the character interactions. The maid, limpet, and both mantis girls are all fantastic and well worth wading through the occasional burst of cringe-inducing wordplay.

Natalie Maher‘s Vigor Mortis series is a work that’s overall quite good, but only consistently so in the first novel.

The second has an issue of expectation, where something occurs about halfway through promising serious consequences… only to end up just kind of ignored until nearly the end. The third makes it clear there’s a bit of shounen-itis going on (i.e. the protagonist seemingly becomes powerful only for someone/thing to randomly show up and curb-stomp her; repeat). And the fourth, despite having an ending that fits the series’ main themes, feels like a punt (and includes a baffling therapy segment partway through which reminds me of how the Evangelion TV show ended).

Those themes, by the way, would be: Self-acceptance (or the lack thereof), no good deed goes unpunished, and pleasant servitude vs. unpleasant freedom (i.e. is it better to serve in heaven or reign in hell).
