  • THE GREATEST MAGICMASTER’S RETIREMENT PLAN & Mushoku Tensei #26

Posted on February 1, 2024 3:44 pm by Offkorn Comment

I picked up the first Saikyou Mahoushi no Inton Keikaku novel despite earlier misgivings on a whim and… ended up suitably disappointed. Things starts out okayish in the first half mostly due to it not being quite clear whether or not the tropes are meant to be satire, but by the third quarter it becomes apparent the story is being told in earnest. The spontaneous harem is one thing, but the contrived setting (there would be zero danger of the shield failing if they just stopped expanding) combined with the protagonist instantly caving to every imposition despite being demonstrably all-powerful is just too much to put up with.

Based on the disappointment of its prequel, I went into the final Mushoku Tensei novel with fairly low expectations. So imagine my surprise when it turned out to be fantastic. Just a beautifully done combination of final battle, epilogue, and overall summation of the series. Zero complaints.

Not all that much to say about the third Ore dake Level ga Agaru Sekai novel. It’s essentially more of the same content, while plotwise we’ve only just reached the game’s starting point. Potential trouble on the horizon would be hints the romance elements may develop into a love triangle or even harem situation… something it definitely does not need.

Speaking of harems, Mushoku Tensei‘s penultimate installment oddly does not deliver a big climatic battle. All the foreshadowing made it out like there was going to be some grand melee and they basically only ended up fighting one guy. Then, as insult to injury, a second guy shows up at the last second to end things on a cliffhanger. Really disappointed in how this series’ conclusion is playing out so far.

  • Mushoku Tensei #24 & I’M not the HERO!

As expected the twenty-fourth Mushoku Tensei entry mostly focuses on setting the stage for the final battle. Although it does feature a remarkably effective pre-emptive attack toward the end that makes you wonder just what the point of all that earlier build-up was.

The Shujinkou ja Nai! series is another ‘reincarnated into a game world’ type of story with the odd distinction of having a protagonist who insists he’s not one despite the world doing everything in its power to mark him as such. It’s a vaguely interesting setup whose overall entertainment value will lie in how he ends up reacting to later events. Also perhaps of note is that while it doesn’t currently have any romance elements, there are hints it may advance in an unconventional pseudo-incest direction; the sister of the person our reincarnated protagonist has become has a brother complex despite knowing he’s been possessed by an outsider.

The second Ore dake Level ga Agaru Sekai book is much like the first. It just sort of breezes along doing its own thing not really bothering with any sort of exposition.

Mushoku Tensei‘s twenty-third installment on the other hand waffles about quite a bit. Not much really happens in it beyond a meeting with the mercenaries from the protagonist’s days of impotence and the antagonist acquiring a final ally toward the end.

Looks like there will be one more book of setup and then the twenty-fifth will presumably focus on the showdown with the Man-God’s agents. With only one book left after that… I’m left somewhat concerned over how the series will end.

  • The Mythical Hero’s Otherworld Chronicles #2-3 & Mushoku Tensei #7-22

Despite my earlier misgivings I decided to roll the dice on Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s continuation after all. Remarkably, the very issue I had with the first novel (the protagonist’s odd level of stupidity) was expressly addressed by the author in the second with the third basically staying the course. Makes me wonder if they got similar feedback to that effect during the original release. Regardless, it looks like I’ll be continuing to follow the series for a bit.

Originally I’d avoided reading the Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu series (English subtitle: Jobless Reincarnation) due to concerns that it would have a higher level of perversion than its Anime adaptation (since such adaptations usually tone that part down for a TV audience). As it turns out the fanservice level is pretty much the same, which is to say it’s certainly annoying but not quite at the deal-killing level.

The seventh novel picks up right from where the adaptation left off, making it a good place to jump in, and the author turned out to be pretty adept at storyline pacing. Most of the novels manage to work both as self-contained stories and parts of a greater whole, with only a couple being obviously incomplete (namely #16-17 and #20-21).

So overall it’s a pretty damn good series with the only real issues (aside from the splashes of perversion) being the protagonist’s frequent habit of second-guessing everything and the weird way he frames his anti-Man-God activities as if he’s working for a modern day corporation.
