Kachou Ouji: HARD ROCK save the SPACE

Once the guitarist for the popular hard rock band Black Heaven, now Ouji is just another hapless salaryman. This all changes one night when he meets a mysterious woman who reunites him with his guitar and claims to need his sound to end an intergalactic war.

This is both a mid-life crisis drama and a romantic comedy focused on the uncommon timeframe of life after marriage. The galactic war is more of an excuse to get the band back together and isn’t fleshed out much.

Sakamichi no Apollon: KIDS ON THE SLOPE

An introverted boy with acute anxiety issues stemming from continuously having to move from school to school, Kaoru Nishimi tries to keep to himself. This all changes on his first day at a new school following a chance meeting with Sentarou Kawabuchi, a jazz-loving delinquent. It’s an encounter that will change the way he sees the world.

A school-life relationship drama set in the late 1960’s. While it has a bit of action in the form of schoolyard fights and some situational comedy arising from the mismatched pair of protagonists, for the most part it’s a serious coming-of-age story with a jazz-band backdrop.

Choujikuu Kidan: Southern Cross

Far in the future humanity has begun to colonize other parts of the galaxy, with one of their most recent colonies being located at the edges of known space. Here the Southern Cross defense force is drawn into a war following the sudden appearance of an advanced alien race in the skies above. A conflict in which Jeanne Fránçaix, the inexperienced and irresponsible 2nd officer of the 15th Squad, will end up playing a large role.

Lots of mecha action with periodic bursts of comic relief arising from Jeanne’s carefree personality. Eventually various dramatic revelations are added along with a few romance subplots.

On an alternate plane there exists beings neither human nor god who control the forces of nature on Earth. As a right of passage, on their 16th birthday they travel there to spend a week experiencing the elements firsthand while avoiding the attention of humans. During this period a girl by the name of Chun accidentally causes the death of a human boy, setting in motion a chain of events that threaten to destroy the heavens.

A high-fantasy fairytale drama with a small number of action scenes mostly concentrated in the third quarter and a bit of romantic development.

Rewrite: 2nd Season

Kotarou Tennouji wakes from a dream of past memories and climbs to the peak a flower-covered hill where a lone girl awaits. There he dies, only to awaken again the next night to repeat the journey.

This is two shows in one. The first part is less a continuation of the first season and more the framework in which the first season took place (almost nothing that occurred there matters here, but you have to watch that first if you want to know who the characters are). The second part is a complete reset that begins in the 4th episode; it has little comedy and can be watched without having seen anything else.

Sousei no Onmyouji

Rokuro Enmadou and Benio Adashino are both exceptionally powerful exorcists with tragic pasts. Though Rokuro responded to the tragedy by swearing off exorcism, in Benio’s case it only motivated her to become more powerful. Now the two of them have been proclaimed the ‘Twin Star Exorcists’ and must work together to cleanse the world of evil spirits.

A battle shounen slightly darker than usual with a fairly even mix of comedy, drama, and action. The romance aspect, despite being introduced early, does not become a central focus until the 10th episode while the comedy eventually ends up taking a backseat to the action/drama.

An average student with no particular future plans or goals suddenly finds himself the focus of various girls’ attention.

This show takes place ~9 years after Amagami SS and consists of a similar collection of mutually-exclusive romance arcs. There are three in all, each featuring the same protagonist and focused on a specific type of girl; mischievous, gamer, & childhood friend.
