  • EASYGOING TERRITORY DEFENSE #2 & As a Reincarnated Aristocrat #4

Posted on April 7, 2024 8:48 am by Offkorn Comment

The second Okiraku Ryoushu no Tanoshii Ryouchi Bouei novel continues along the same path laid down by the first, with the protagonist cheerfully running around making weapons of mass destruction and plopping down new settlements one after another while onlookers watch in amazement. He does a bit of attacking toward the end here though, rather than defending, and it looks like the next book will be war-centric.

Speaking of wars, the fourth Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru novel eventually wraps up its civil war arc. While it’s good that it concluded, the path taken ended up pretty unbelievable. Having a neighboring country (recently over its own civil war) throw away tens of thousands of soldiers in order to attack the protagonist out of nowhere is already out of line. Then giving them an infinite morale cheat on top of it? Incredibly heavy-handed.

Regardless, if the Afterword is to be believed the series will return to a more sedate recruitment-focused pacing in the next book.

  • THE HALF-LIFE EMPIRE & Liches Get Stitches

Posted on March 23, 2024 11:40 pm by Offkorn Comment

Shami Stovall‘s first Half-Life Empire novel has quite an interesting and well-developed setting… so it’s rather unfortunate that the protagonist gets victimized so often. Apart from the very first theft she’s constantly getting captured or fully reliant on someone else to save her (sometimes in a less than believable manner). While the third book’s description hints that she eventually develops power of her own, I’m not thrilled by the idea of wading through two books worth of ‘damsel in distress’ to get there.

The Litches Get Stitches books, by HJ Tolson, tell the story of a gardening and crafts-loving witch who gets in touch with her inner axe-murderer after unexpectedly transforming into a lich. The contrast between her homemaking interests and (occasionally self-destructive) impulsive bloodlust works rather well and the stakes rise from defending a house in the first book, all the way to planning to oppose a god in the fourth. I’m interested to see if it escalates further or actually concludes the story with deicide.

  • The Otome Heroine’s Fight for Survival & 7th Time L∞p #1-3

Posted on March 11, 2024 2:29 pm by Offkorn Comment

Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival makes a couple of unexpected choices in its event trajectory. Rather than have the protagonist be isekai’d into the game world, she’s instead naturally one of the game’s characters who awakens to self-awareness after killing someone who was isekai’d into the story. Then later on it looks like it’s going to go the independent murderhobo route only to swerve into noble-backed battle maid training instead.

Definitely a number of interesting elements floating around so far and I’m curious to see how things develop. That said, the first quarter or so is a bit of a chore to get through due to being absolutely drenched in background exposition and overflowing with various training-related monologues. Would’ve been nice had that part been condensed to like a chapter or two max.

The lengthily, and slightly misleadingly, titled Loop 7-kaime no Akuyaku Reijou wa, Moto Tekikoku de Jiyuu Kimama na Hanayome Seikatsu o Mankitsu suru series (English subtitle: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!) starts out as a fairly enjoyable slow-burn romance with hints toward a larger background plot. The protagonist is a nice mix of competent and awkward, the love interest is a pretty standard kuudere, and events play out in an entertaining manner… for the first two novels at least.

The third novel, however, is atrocious. The focus there mainly falls on two children, each annoying in a different manner, while the protagonist falls back on behaving like a servant from one of her previous loops (despite now being an empress-to-be) and the prince basically becomes an afterthought. With the event development and secondary characters not being any good either, I’m likely not going to bother following the series any further.

  • STAND ALONE, TAKING GROUND, & SHATTERED DREAMS

Posted on March 8, 2024 9:34 am by Offkorn Comment

A human-centric space opera, John Van Stry‘s first two Wolfhounds novels are remarkably proficient at depicting shades of indefensible behavior. There aren’t really any unequivocal ‘good guys’ here, yet the protagonists still manage to be the people you want to win in the end. My only complaint so far is that the romantic development in the first book is quite abrupt.

Suffering a bit from a shaky start, Shattered Dreams is the first of Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 novels. The (minor) issue here is that the protagonist starts out terrible yet does a complete 180 after leaving town. So… why not just have him start out with that decent personality? It wouldn’t have changed anything about the awakening event itself, would’ve made reading through said event far less painful, and avoided any whiplash inducing characterization issues afterward.

Anyway, opening chapter aside the book is a perfectly engaging action-focused zero-to-hero type of story. Particularly notable things at this point would I suppose be the dark undercurrent relating to the protagonist’s skill and the absence of any serious romance elements.

  • Inheritance & A Matter of Secrets and Spies

Posted on December 24, 2023 9:19 am by Offkorn Comment

The first book of an intended trilogy, Nora Roberts‘ Inheritance is an urban fantasy mystery/romance with occasional horror/suspense elements which starts off quite good and stays that way for the most part. The main issue being the fantasy elements, which become more pronounced as the novel progresses up the point of complete saturation at the (cliffhanger) ending. They work best here when used subtly rather than boldly out in the open.

Honor Raconteur‘s tenth Henri Davenforth novel is basically more of the same as far as character interactions go. What’s different is the 3-part open-ended structure. You basically have three separate cases that all end up both related and incomplete, which in turn makes the book itself feel incomplete. I think it would’ve been better if the vacation segment stayed a simple vacation instead of trying to squeeze in a criminal element.

  • The Brilliant Healer’s New Life in the Shadows & You Were Experienced, I Was Not: OUR DATING STORY

Posted on December 15, 2023 9:26 am by Offkorn Comment

The massively titled Isshun de Chiryou shiteita noni Yakutatazu to Tsuihou sareta Tensai Chiyushi, Yami Healer Toshite Tanoshiku Ikiru is a variety of overpowered protagonist harem in which the protagonist serves as the straightman to a cast full of goofballs. Not much else to say about it since the healer gimmick is sort of undermined by his scalpel ability and mastery of defensive/enhancement magic.

I picked up Keikenzumi na Kimi to, Keiken Zero na Ore ga, Otsukiai suru Hanashi. on a whim hoping for some kind of cute romantic comedy. Unfortunately, while there are some cute parts, there’s far more awkwardness and cringe with not really any comedy. The fairly strong indication there’ll be love triangle elements in the future does it no favors either.

  • A Bunch of LNs

Posted on October 21, 2023 12:11 pm by Offkorn Comment

The Watashi wa Teki ni Narimasen! series ends up a bit interesting for combining a reincarnation trope with a time loop. Unfortunately it doesn’t really do much else of note, having relatively low stakes, besides have a pretty fun/cute protagonist. Basically it’s the kind of series you can read off and on while doing other things. It’s really not made for binging.

The Lily Clairet series is similar in that respect, being a low-stakes slice of life series focused almost entirely on conversational interplay (one reviewer compared it to Bakemonogatari, and that’s fairly apt). Key things to note would be that it’s a natively English LN with a Japanese setting instead of a translated work, there aren’t actually any romance elements (besides some yuri subtext) until the sixth entry, and the protagonist is a near total doormat who lets everyone walk all over her.

The fifth Shinwa Densetsu novel escalates things by quite a bit. It’s been long hinted that there was something off with the protagonist’s past, and that darkness now appears to be poised to take center stage.

Moving on, it turned out I was right about one book not being enough to wrap up Shinigami ni Sodaterareta Shoujo‘s storyline. This sixth novel only manages to conclude the battle with Felix before quickly moving on (in a painfully contrived manner) to confront the death god behind the scenes and end on a double cliffhanger. It doesn’t really engender much enthusiasm for the finale to be honest.

Lastly we come to Shinwa Densetsu no Eiyuu no Isekaitan‘s fourth entry. This wraps up (the first part of?) the academy arc before launching the protagonist off into the unknown on a new adventure. I seriously hope it never returns to the academy, as while the setting wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t particularly interesting or meaningful either.

  • THE MOST HERETICAL LAST BOSS QUEEN #1-3 & The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess

Posted on September 5, 2023 11:48 am by Offkorn Comment

Starting off a bit like Nise Seijo, Higeki no Genkyou to Naru Saikyou Gedou Last Boss Joou wa Tami no Tame ni Tsukushimasu. (English subtitle: FROM VILLAINESS TO SAVIOR) quickly goes in a more standard otome game direction focused on drama and romance with frequent comedic relief.

As far as genre goes there’s no issue since all the various elements are blended together well. No, the issues lie with the protagonist (who’s something of a ditz) and the writing style (heavy on repetition). She’ll fret about troublesome upcoming game events… then go out of her way to encounter them, change how they play out… then act shocked when future events deviate from the game’s, deliberately trigger all of someone’s romance flags… only to be perplexed when he falls in love with her instead of her sister. It’s exasperating.

The first Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon book is a bait and switch, starting off as a perverted comedy only to swerve straight into heavy drama for the second half. I ended up liking neither incarnation; the perversion level is much too high in the comedic half while the antagonist of the dramatic half is one of the worse archetypes (blames everyone for their problems except the person actually responsible).

I didn’t really have any expectations going into Maseki Gourmet (English subtitle: eating magical power made me the Strongest!), so it ended up a bit of a pleasant surprise that despite the name there isn’t any notable food focus. Beyond that it’s a fairly by the numbers reincarnation isekai that suffers from a somewhat strange dialog style and a few highly questionable events.

The second Kusushi no Majo novel stays the course the previous one set while laying some groundwork for potential dramatic development down the line. Though it doesn’t do anything particularly exciting, nor does it make any missteps.

  • Solo Leveling #7 & Banished from the HERO’s PARTY #8

Posted on March 22, 2023 2:24 pm by Offkorn Comment

There’s a great deal going on in the seventh Solo Leveling novel.

We get the (apparently) full backstory on the war between the Rulers and Monarchs, why it’s happening on Earth, why the Shadow Monarch’s position has been so ambiguous, and why Jinwoo was chosen. The conclusion of his father’s arc is also included along with a small bit of romantic development. Most notable however is that this book features the dissolution of the titular leveling system… an ambitious thing to do considering there’s still five left to go.

As for Shin no Nakama‘s eighth entry, it’s basically reinforced all my earlier misgivings about the series. There’s just something particularly unnatural about the event development that makes it a bit of a chore to read. So yeah, I’ll be dropping the series here.
