Expelled from his last school after being involved in a huge brawl, Fudou Nomura is accepted into the Shiritsu Aichi Kyousei Academy, a school that has become known for taking in problem students and ‘correcting’ them. Now Fudou must defeat the school’s five-member disciplinary group if he wants to continue living his carefree life.

A harem action comedy with a moderate ecchi streak that transforms into an action drama for the last three episodes or so. The action is heavy on swordplay and martial arts while the comedy is mostly reaction based.

Kabukibu!

Loving kabuki for as long as he can remember, one day following a particularly moving performance Kurogo Kurusu decides to start up a kabuki club at school in order to put on productions of his own. He quickly runs into resistance and skepticism though and must fight an uphill battle to gather members since no one has ever done a highschool-level kabuki performance club before.

A semi-educational school-life club show focused on promoting the extremely uncommon topic of kabuki. It features both comedic and dramatic elements along with several abridged kabuki performances.

Twin Angel Break

Soon after moving to Tokyo, the aspiring hero of justice Meguru Amatsuki finds a strange medal in her dorm room. It turns out to be a magical transforming device and soon she’s fighting evil with the help of the more reserved Sumire Kisaragi as a Twin Angel.

A straightforward magical girl show of the light and fluffy variety that leans more toward school-life comedy than action. There’s little drama and the ecchi is mostly restricted to episodic episodic transformation and bath scenes.

Nino Arisugawa has always loved to sing, and has made promises in the past with two boys who had to move away that she would re-unite with them through her song. Six years have passed since then and they finally meet each other once again in high school… but things have changed and their reception is not as warm as she’d hoped.

A school-life love triangle, heavy on angst and unrequited feelings, with a significant musical theme and a moderate amount of comic relief.

Ren’ai Boukun: The very lovely tyrant of love ♥

Following a series of unfortunate events, Seiji Aino finds himself caught up in a love polygon between a fujoshi angel, a jealous yandere classmate, and her incestuous half-sister. Worse, he now has to work as a matchmaker for other couples or his soul will be sent to hell. So begins his new daily life as a cupid’s helper.

A romantic slapstick comedy with some dramatic subplots regarding the girls’ backgrounds. While it does contain heavy ecchi scenes, they’re very rare and tend to be brief.

Virtual reality technology has now advanced to the point that people can now experience idol concerts from the comfort of their own homes. In the wake of this a worldwide idol ranking system has been created alongside schools specifically designed to train new idols. StarRing and Shadow are two such idol groups who seek to rise to the top of the charts.

Don’t let the first episode fool you, as this is not an action series. It’s a straight-forward idol show with all the attendant training, cute girls doing cute things, and industry/friendship drama that entails. Do note however that half of each episode is devoted to a live-action cast segment.

Sakamichi no Apollon: KIDS ON THE SLOPE

An introverted boy with acute anxiety issues stemming from continuously having to move from school to school, Kaoru Nishimi tries to keep to himself. This all changes on his first day at a new school following a chance meeting with Sentarou Kawabuchi, a jazz-loving delinquent. It’s an encounter that will change the way he sees the world.

A school-life relationship drama set in the late 1960’s. While it has a bit of action in the form of schoolyard fights and some situational comedy arising from the mismatched pair of protagonists, for the most part it’s a serious coming-of-age story with a jazz-band backdrop.

Eiga Chibi Maruko-chan: Italia kara Kita Shounen

Six kids from around the globe have come to Japan for a 10-day homestay. Originally staying together at Shigeru’s, they’ve since been split up among the members of Maruko’s class to better experience normal Japanese life. The boy from Italy takes a strong interest in Maruko and, to her great annoyance, ends up at her house.

Part comedy and part inspirational, this movie tells an essentially stand-alone story. The comedy, which is personality/reaction-based, ends up secondary to Andrea’s search for his grandfather’s friends and his eventual bonding with Maruko.
