    Infernal Investigations

While I’m not thrilled with how the protagonist deliberately weakens herself nor how many are keen to take advantage of her, the world-building is interesting and the parts where she’s not pigeonholed as a victim are top notch.

    Shadowbane

Something about the irreverent atmosphere doesn’t quite feel right when meshed with the heavy subject matter and it’s annoying that the protagonist has such a perfect assassination ability yet no offensive abilities or ranged weapons to go with it. Was also more than a little annoyed by the soft reset at the end of the first book.

I will strive Beyond This Cursed Bloodline

This story reads very much like a fan-translation of a Japanese light novel, with a large number of odd turns of phrase and instances of broken syntax. Personally I ended up finding the style kind of charming… even if I did have to give up providing edit suggestions only a few chapters in. No, ultimately what caused me to drop it near the end of the second book was the whole ‘can’t control her powers’ plotline that got introduced. It just felt completely arbitrary and at odds with how her soulscape had been built up specifically to grant total control over her abilities.

    Farisa’s Crossing

Definitely interesting, but I’m starting to think psychological and/or underdog stories just aren’t what I’m looking for.

    DEMON QUEEN Wants to Paint

The title is pretty accurate, far moreso than I was expecting honestly. Starting her off as a baby was a bold move when combined with her total rejection of everything around her, and one that just doesn’t work for me.

    1% LIFESTEAL

The setting pissed me off just a little bit too much to stick around long enough to see how/if the protagonist’s personality evolved.

  • The Water Magician: The Central Provinces Arc III & Dimension Wave

The third Mizu Zokusei novel is much like the first two. If you enjoyed the banter in those then there’s no reason not to continue on through this one.

Dimension Wave is a story in the vein of Free Life Fantasy, except with a protagonist who’s obsessed with fishing rather than crafting and isn’t (yet) notably overpowered. There isn’t anywhere near as strong a focus on game mechanics either, with it being more ensemble-based with a greater emphasis on character interaction… and fairly strong hints of future harem development.

I picked up this eighth volume of Isekai Mahou wa Okureteru! after seeing the series had finally come off hiatus only to promptly drop it ~15% of the way through after being reminded of everything I didn’t like about it.

Speaking of things I didn’t like, I still have no idea why I keep following Immortal Princess. Somehow despite coming within a hair’s breadth of dropping it at the beginning of the eighth installment, which starts off incredibly randomly, I ended up at the end with an ambivalent “may as well keep reading to see where it goes”. Can’t even begin to explain how that happened.

  • HERETICAL FISHING #3 & RUTHLESS SPACE PIRATES ARE MARAUDING AND ALL I GOT IS THIS STAT MENU

Posted on December 5, 2024 10:46 am by Offkorn Comment

In the third of Haylock Jobson’s Heretical Fishing novels we appear to be reaching the endgame. The town had been upgraded, enemies have been exorcised, the core romance has evolved, and the protagonist seems to be just a small step away from godhood. That said, the author could instead theoretically just shift into repetitive slice-of-life mode perpetually…. Guess we’ll have to see.

Considering the disappointing conclusion of All I Got Is This Stat Menu‘s third entry, the wait for the fourth book felt like it took forever. As expected the whole captivity thing didn’t last long, but instead of focusing on the Union or Empire it instead focuses on an independent sector plagued by pirates. Only at the very end does the Empire-related background plot and conflict with that one Warden Commander spontaneously erupt and get resolved. With only two books left in the series I’m rather curious where exactly it plans to go from there.

  • The Former Assassin Who Got Reincarnated as a Noble Girl & EXP Is Golden

Posted on October 31, 2024 3:14 am by Offkorn Comment

Feeling a bit like Otome Game no Heroine de Saikyou Survival, Moto Ansatsusha, Tensei shita Kizoku no Reijou ni Narimashita. mainly centers on how an emotionally stunted reincarnated assassin deals with having a pacifist airhead of a mother and a manipulative idiot for an adoptive sister. Although it also eventually introduces subdued romance elements via a love triangle between her, the somewhat bloodthirsty slave boy she picks up during a mission, and a highly practical prince, which seem like they’re going to be the more long-term focus of the story.

Something like a cross between Free Life Fantasy Online and Overlord, Ougon no Keikenchi (English subtitle: The Queen of Destruction Speedruns Her Ascension) embodies its subtitle fairly well; this is absolutely a speedrun which at times lacks believability (why were endgame-level metal ingots available in the starting area?). Still ends up more entertaining than not though as long as you don’t mind a somewhat anti-social protagonist who mostly talks to themselves about game mechanics.

    Ruinous Return

Defying initial expectations, this isn’t a straightforward revenge story. Rather than returning as herself the protagonist instead returns to the fantasy world as the demon/dragon king after a decent timeskip… only to find that the ‘evil’ races aren’t as evil as initially thought. So, at this point at least, it ends up more a kingdom-building story. Which isn’t a bad thing.

    SOUL WEAVER CHRONICLES

A non-Earth isekai featuring both cultivation and system core aspects with a protagonist that can empower and resurrect people (both necromantically and as fully resurrected thralls). Interesting so far, but could get bogged down in any number of ways.

    Lost Souls and a Demoness

Despite having a succubus protagonist, there isn’t much in the way of sexual content (which I consider a positive). Instead the story focuses more on the charm/dominate and demonic rage aspects, with most of the content so far centered on combat and combat-adjacent activity… although there’s also an appreciable amount of character building.

    ADVENT OF DRAGONFIRE

This story stands out for not beginning with tragedy or family trauma of some kind. The protagonist here doesn’t really have a personal goal and mostly (at the start) just wants to become powerful because her brothers are powerful. Which makes all the violence and death she ends up having to wade through during her first trial (which takes up the vast majority of the story so far and doesn’t seem anywhere near finished) all the more shocking. In a way it ends up feeling more grimdark than the above Soul Weaver one.

    WAIF

A zero-to-hero story that for some reason I couldn’t get into. Something about the character interactions just felt off.

    CORPO AGE

A Cyberpunk-like story with a completely unexplained System implementation and a murderhobo protagonist who’s only interested in money. Not really my kind of thing.

    MAGUS REBORN

Rather similar to Legend of the Arch Magus. The key difference here is that while that overpowered protagonist steamrolls all opposition without complication, this one occasionally struggles a bit (and there are also some tertiary cultivation aspects). So it basically comes down to a matter of personal preference. Do beware that it could use another editing pass or two though, as the occasional technical error is fairly noticeable.

    Wraithwood Botanist

This is an interesting series that doesn’t really resemble anything I’ve read before, with a fairly well developed setting and distinct characters. On the negative side of things the author is one of those unwilling to fix typos and technical errors pointed out in the comments, and made a really odd choice to keep old, obsolete chapters up (which now have to be skipped past) instead of editing/replacing them with the rewritten ones.

    The New DARK LORD

The first book plays out much like a standard isekai hero tale, just one with an unambiguously brutal protagonist somewhat similar to Father of Monstrosity‘s. The second book however completely changes gears to present the promised ‘rise of a new dark lord’ content. A bit too early to see how that will turn out, but it’s definitely a solid enough start.

    AVAUNT

Unusual for being a single complete book rather than a series, this story is rather unique with a combination of Jack Vance-ish offhand absurdity, Fargo-ish mix of violence and dark comedy, and a magic system that resembles computer code.

Technomancer: How I Became the Hapless Sidekick of the World’s Greatest Magical Girl

Wasn’t really onboard with the first couple of chapters’ themes, and the lead-up to the protagonist’s awakening was just far too contrived.

    THE EMPEROR’S CONCUBINE

Not sure whether it’s because I’ve just read too many stories with this setup, or the writing style was just a bit too stilted, but I could not get into this one. I will say that having the protagonist not be a blatantly isekai’d earthling was an interesting choice… but that may have contributed to the awkwardness of her actions.

    IN A CIVILIZED MANNER

The protagonist simply rubbed me the wrong way. The setup’s kind of odd as well.

    Cursed Explorer of the Arcana

While this started out good with a distinct Dragoneye Moons vibe, the slavery sideplot dragged it down, the genocidal trek through the forest didn’t help any, and the protagonist of said slavery plotline becoming a central character was the nail in the coffin.

    RUTHLESS: Path of Conquest

Despite there being nothing in particular I can point to, the story as a whole was just slightly offputting enough to not want to bother following it for an extended period… though I suspect the oddly high level of modern realism played a part.

Posted on August 24, 2024 1:04 am by Offkorn Comment

With all eight of my characters now through the Dawntrail main quest, I guess it’s time to post about it.

As far as the storyline goes the first half of the game is mostly good. There’s is a bit of a hiccup in the third area when one of the other throne claimants does a complete personality reversal out of nowhere, but otherwise it’s pretty damn solid. Only one quest to say something dumb in chat and only a couple that require forced emote usage. The second half though… the second half is just a near-constant stream of cringe-inducing nonsense. They even add a child as a major secondary character toward the end (replete with a ‘follow the idiot child through a ruined cityscape’ quest).

Sidequests are on the whole mostly better than Endwalker I think, with not all that many being purposely wasteful with your time. The role quests meanwhile are also pretty solid and even better can be rushed through pretty easily on secondary characters since now only the last quest in a line features a single-player duty.

As for the new classes, Pictomancer has a pretty unique playstyle and just unloads tons of damage to both single targets and groups. Once you get accustomed to when to re-cast the painting spells it ends up pretty fun. Viper meanwhile is basically just a cross between Reaper and Monk, more the latter than the former after they got rid of its damage debuff. If you want a faster Reaper or a less fiddly Monk, this is your class.

    As for class changes:

    • Warrior and Paladin haven’t notably changed.
    • Dark Knight and Gunbreaker losing their damage dash is annoying, but otherwise they’re basically the same.
    • White Mage, Scholar, and Sage haven’t notably changed.
    • Astrologian is… pretty weird now. I liked the previous Card Draw system better, but this one isn’t terrible.
    • I don’t like what they did to Dragoon. Separating Fang and Claw and Wheeling Thrust just creates a hassle.
    • The new Monk is a bit of a shock, but I think it’s ultimately a slight improvement since there’s now less to keep track of.
    • Ninja is a bit better I think without having to worry about keeping up the speed buff.
    • Haven’t played much of Samurai, but it didn’t seem to have notably changed.
    • Reaper is unchanged.
    • Bard, Machinist, and Dancer are all essentially unchanged.
    • Black Mage has been simplified a bit, and I love the changes made to Umbral Soul… but it definitely takes some getting used to.
    • Red Mage is a bit more fiddly in the burst phase, which I’m not thrilled about.
    • Summoner is unchanged.

    DEMONIC MAGICIAN

Found this series in the ‘readers also liked’ section of Madman Apocalypse and there certainly is a bit of overlap. The insanity on display here is less over-the-top though and it features significant romance elements.

    CHANGELING

Coming across like an amalgam of Solo Leveling and Journey of Black and Red (with the same author as the latter), this series lags quite a bit in the transition from downtrodden grunt to overpowered vigilante. The beginning is good, and after she becomes a ‘mask’ is good, but the space between can take some effort to get through.

    THE WICKED HOUSE OF Caroline

A work by the same author as Tori Transmigrated, this series is unfortunately nowhere near as well constructed. The level of believability is just not up to par and the author’s disinterest in fixing any of the (occasionally quite serious) mistakes pointed out in the comments doesn’t do it any favors.

    Behold! The Harbinger of Doom

A fairly unconventional series that brings to mind Jack Vance‘s Dying Earth and Demon Princes novels. It’s not really something that can be binged though as the concentration of randomness is pretty high.

    Parallel Hearts

Either the extremely… florid style of prose is to your taste or it isn’t. I prefer more modern phrasing.

    Shades of Perception

While this plays with some pretty interesting ideas, I ultimately had to drop it about 25 chapters in. The protagonist keeps deliberately walking into questionable situations only to end up caving to those opposing him, even when he has a superior position.

    ASHEVA: A SUMMONER’S TALE

A stealth cultivation novel in a sci-fi setting. When it comes right down to it I just don’t really like cultivation as a concept and was less than thrilled by both the protagonist’s naming sense and the actions of one of the secondary characters.

  • Free Life Fantasy: Online -IMMORTAL PRINCESS- #7 & Moon Blossom Asura #3

Posted on August 4, 2024 12:52 pm by Offkorn Comment

Quite a bit occurs in the seventh Free Life Fantasy Online novel; a brief dungeon dive, a game event modeled after a school sports festival, and the protagonist evolving herself into a literal cosmic horror. Kind of comes across as an arbitrary hodgepodge of ideas to be honest and I’m not really sure what direction it’s even trying to go in at this point.

Gekka no Shoujo Asura‘s third entry ends up falling somewhere between the previous two quality-wise. On the plus side the whole Jeanne plot is resolved and the focus looks like it might go back to more standard mercenary things, on the negative side the perverted aspects don’t get any better… and may get worse depending on how the butt-obsessed monster girl ends up handled.
