The mercenary company Cosmoranger J9 consists of four core members: The leader Issac, their pilot Bowie, Kid the sharpshooter, and Angel, an espionage/sabotage specialist. Their self-proclaimed mission is to keep the various criminal organizations in check by taking on jobs the authorities cannot.

An action series featuring all different types of action, from blaster fights on the ground to super-robot mecha fights in space. While it does include dramatic aspects, they’re presented in an over-the-top manner that may be difficult to take seriously.

  • Choujikuu Kidan: Southern Cross

Posted on May 9, 2017 12:57 pm by Offkorn Comment

Far in the future humanity has begun to colonize other parts of the galaxy, with one of their most recent colonies being located at the edges of known space. Here the Southern Cross defense force is drawn into a war following the sudden appearance of an advanced alien race in the skies above. A conflict in which Jeanne Fránçaix, the inexperienced and irresponsible 2nd officer of the 15th Squad, will end up playing a large role.

Lots of mecha action with periodic bursts of comic relief arising from Jeanne’s carefree personality. Eventually various dramatic revelations are added along with a few romance subplots.

After being stabbed to death in a train station, Masaru Katou finds himself transported to a sparse room filled with several other people. There it’s explained that his old life is over and in this new life he must hunt down and kill aliens in an elaborate death game.

A full-CGI sequel to the 2004 TV series Gantz that can be viewed as a stand-alone story. It mostly consists of gore-heavy action scenes, though there’s also some drama and a small amount of romance mixed in.

  • Ajin OVAs

Short stories taking place both before and during the main Ajin series.

The first is a prequel focused on drama featuring Shinya, a university student who discovers that he’s an Ajin following a fatal motorcycle accident. The second is a collection of comedic ‘behind-the-scenes’ character-based segments, each of which takes place at a different part of the parent series. The third is an action-centric prequel centering on the event that triggered Satou’s transformation from soldier to terrorist.

Ajin: Immortal beings able to manifest powerful avatars made of dark particles. Hunted by the government for research purposes and vilified as inhuman monsters, a group of Ajin come together to form a terrorist organization with visions of forcing reform. Meanwhile, an otherwise normal student recently revealed to be an Ajin finds himself on the run from both groups.

The first half of the show is an action drama focused on Kei Nagai’s capture and eventual flight from government agents, with Satou’s terrorist actions providing the backdrop. The second half however transitions into something closer to an agency thriller, with the conflict between special forces and the terrorists taking center stage.

Short version: An inferior Dragon Age: Inquisition.

    Slightly longer version:

This is a large game with quite a lot to do. So it’s unfortunate that navigating the galaxy map is such a chore (especially since they got planetside fast-travel right), the minor glitches it has end up remarkably annoying, the respawning mechanic is pretty bad, and that the dialog/script is atrocious.

Really everything else could be forgiven if it weren’t for the writing. We’re talking internet-published fanfiction level here. It goes well beyond cringe-inducing, which ends up something of a mystery considering it starts off well enough. Did the writing team change partway through development? Did they just give up and/or run out of inspiration a quarter of the way through? Whatever the case the end-result is practically unreadable and late-endgame developments in particular feel like they were pulled out of thin air.

All that said, if you’re just looking for something to waste some time with the game is good enough. If you’re looking for something engaging or, worse, you’re a serious completionist (the glitches and random spawning combined with the slow system map make getting 100% a real pain), it should be avoided.

The catlike aliens known as Nyanbo are looking for pieces of their UFO so that they can to return to space. Sometimes they get tired of searching however and just wish to play around like actual cats.

The show primarily features live action visuals (including real cats), with only the Nyanbos themselves being animated. The comedic style ranges from slapstick to romantic comedy.

When the CGS mercenary group is contracted to transport the leader of a Martian independence movement to Earth, they become the target of Gjallarhorn, a police-like organization which seeks to keep Mars under Earth’s control through any means necessary. Earth however is not united, and the mercenaries quickly become entangled in an elaborate political scheme.

A mecha action drama with child soldiers as the protagonists. Like many Gundam series it focuses on the themes of colonialism, prejudice, rivalry, and chains of revenge. Less common are the mafioso elements it eventually adopts.

Goryoukan Academy is a prestigious all-girls school located in the middle of the city. Unknown to the general public this school is the training ground for the Fifth Force, a group of girls with the ability to see and fight the inter-dimensional invaders known as O’bli.

Equal parts daily school life antics and monster-fighting action with an early focus on training. The ecchi level is moderate and mainly takes the form of skimpy clothing and numerous bathing scenes.

  • Mousou Kagaku ADV – Chaos;Child

Posted on March 31, 2017 4:10 am by Offkorn Comment

Strange suicides have begun occurring in Shibuya, deaths which bear a resemblance to the ones from the ‘New Generation of Madness’ incident from six years prior. For reasons of his own, the president of Hekiho Academy’s newspaper club has decided to investigate these incidents… ending up a target as result.

A horror thriller that eventually acquires the aspects of an ESP action series. While it’s a direct sequel to Chaos;Head, watching that is not required to watch this (though if you haven’t it would be a good idea to skip the ‘episode 0’ recap since it only works as a refresher).
