Around 200 years in the future an organization called The Historical Revisionists labors to change history through the use of a time-traveling army of monsters. To prevent their meddling, warriors created from the spirits of various famous swords are sent back in time to fight them.

In reality this show mostly consists of daily life scenes focused on the swords’ antics around the citadel compound and their reminiscence of past events as weapons. The action aspects, when they show up at all, are relegated to a 5-minute or so mission segment toward the end of each episode.

Some time after the events of the first series, a new enemy has launched a surprise attack on Sound Planet and caused mass destruction. With it already being too late to fight back, a trio of ninja resort to time travel to warn the populace and hopefully prevent the impending tragedy.

While you don’t have to watch the prequel to follow the new storyline, that is where most of the characters and their quirks are introduced and it may be a bit overwhelming to have them all appear at once. The two seasons aren’t much different, having the same style of comedy (situational) and a similar mix of music, everyday cheerful situations, and bursts of personal/relationship-based drama.

  • Shuumatsu no Izetta

Posted on December 20, 2016 3:26 pm by Offkorn Comment

The kingdom of Germania has just invaded the small duchy of Eylstadt, whose princess is in a neutral territory lobbying for the assistance of Britannia and its allies. Captured by enemy soldiers and on the verge of sacrificing herself she encounters a most unlikely ally from her past: Izetta, the world’s last magic user.

A sort of alternate history, this show re-tells the early events of World War II with the twist of enlisting the aid of a powerful sorceress against Germany before the USA got involved. While for the most part a war drama with occasional daily life interludes, it concludes as something of a sci-fi/fantasy spectacle.

Framed for murders he didn’t commit, Liu Mi finds himself and his three accomplices sentenced to death. Before the sentence can be carried out, the prisoners are abducted by unknown assailants and forced to participate in a death match against giant monsters.

The show has a straight-forward closed-area survival setup accented with a hint of mystery/conspiracy that’s ever so slowly elaborated on. It also ends right in the middle of a scene.

  • Saber Marionette J

Posted on December 1, 2016 10:47 am by Offkorn Comment

A colony ship has an accident in orbit over a remote planet and six men are the only survivors. Now, 300 years later, an all-male society consisting of six different countries has been established through the use of cloning technology. On this world with no women, androids called Marionettes have been fashioned in their likeness to fill various menial and combat roles. One morning a young man named Otaru accidentally awakens a powerful combat Marionette with the rare ability to feel and express human emotions, a fortunate development considering that one of the descendants of those six men has just begun a campaign of conquest.

While this show shares a few setting and character details with Saber Marionette R, in most respects it’s completely different. Rather than being a drama with little in the way of romantic elements, it’s instead a slapstick comedy featuring standard harem-style hijinks with only tertiary dramatic aspects.

Following a mysterious mass disappearance that occurred 12 years prior, Rena just wants to live a quiet everyday life. This is not to be, as the past catches up to fling her and her surrogate family into a conflict over the power of lost gods.

Primarily consisting of action and drama, the show also periodically dips into daily life territory every few episodes as a sort of reprieve. Don’t go into it expecting lighthearted fluff though, as while it’s not full grimdark it still tries to play things seriously more often than not.

  • SM Girls – Saber Marionette R

On a world with no women, populated by clones, androids called Marionettes have been created to both fill that absence and act as soldiers. One night a masked man launches a military coup in the country of Romana, forcing the ruler’s son to flee the capitol city with the help of his two attendant Marionettes. He’s soon joined by a third, and the new quartet must find a way to return to the city in time to save his father from execution.

This OVA series is mostly a dark action/drama lightened with occasional splashes of comedy. Aside from the ecchi aspects, what most stands out about it is the character naming style.

  • Appleseed

    appleseed-ova-title

The gleaming utopian city of Olympus has been built atop the ruins of a post-apocalyptic wasteland, offering the promise of a peaceful life in a war-torn world. However, one person’s utopia is another’s prison. The city has its fair share of terrorists looking to upset the status quo and, with the help of a disillusioned ESWAT officer, they’ve decided to set their sights on stealing the prototype for a new autonomous weapons platform.

This movie is the first of several Appleseed adaptations, and it unfolds the most like a police procedural/thriller. Rather than being completely focused on Deunan and Briarios it’s more about the setting as a whole, with Calon (the disillusioned officer) playing a large role.

    Rakshasa Street Title Screen

Ling Xia has just graduated and is having trouble finding a job. After a run-in with a suspicious ‘fortune teller’ she finds herself embroiled in the spirit world, her fate entwined with that of a young general who oversees one of the limbo areas for the dead known as requiem streets.

The episodes alternate between a present-day time period focused on Ling’s tribulations (action/drama with a few bits of comedy) and flashing back to Yanbing’s past (mainly drama), showing how he became the area’s guardian. It’s essentially two separate battle shounens packaged as one and ends just as the real journey begins.

  • The Mortal Instruments, Hardship, & Damnation

Posted on March 16, 2015 3:38 am by Offkorn Comment

The Mortal Instruments series originally ended as a trilogy, and it was a pretty good ending that felt like an ending… but then the author decided to extend it into a six-part series, the fourth and fifth of which (City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls) are something of a slog. They just feel completely extraneous, as if they don’t really have anything new to say; existing solely to drag the story out and ruin the conclusion of the third book. The sixth however (City of Heavenly Fire) is actually fairly engaging and almost justifies the existence of the two preceding books. The ending isn’t really an ending though and it handles the Simon issue rather horribly.

Hardship and Damnation are the final two books in Jean Johnson‘s Theirs Not To Reason Why series. The first of them is only so-so and seems a little forced and overly limited, but the second works quite well and wraps the series up nicely. I can’t say I’m not interested in a sequel that covers the future timeline that this series spends so much effort preparing for.
