  • Continuing On & ULTIMATE BOUNDARIES

Posted on June 9, 2025 12:31 am by Offkorn Comment

The seventh Reborn as the First Boss novella is much better than the previous one, feeling both more in-line with how the series presented itself at the beginning and as a spiritual successor to Winterborn.

Shawn Wilson‘s eighth Ultimate Level 1 novel unfortunately returns to the garbage arena world of the sixth. Making things worse, while the author apparently realizes how terrible this place is partway through and eventually writes it out of the picture… the method used is a literal deus ex machina. This is indicative of a larger shounen-ization issue starting to plague the series: By any objective measure the protagonist is obscenely overpowered, yet somehow there’s always someone inexplicably stronger waiting just offscreen to curb-stomp him and trigger a training sequence.

The power levels are horrifically ill-defined and arbitrary. He’s killed a world champion tower-clearing dragon along with the allegedly favored child of a god, and has blazed through the tower itself for some time, but somehow a dwarf that abandoned the tower at level 60 because it was too hard (a level he breezed through solo) can utterly destroy him and his party attacking together. It’s nonsense. All that said… I do want to see him burn the elven capital to ash and so will be picking up the next book in the series. Although if that too turns out disappointing I’ll probably drop it there.

Coming as something of a shock after the disappointment of the sixth novel, Shawn Wilson‘s seventh Ultimate Level 1 novel is quite good. He somehow managed to sidestep the issues caused by the protagonist’s sudden exponential growth relative to his teammates while expanding the scope of the main plotline.

Crystal Genocide turned out to indeed be the start of a new series, and RavensDagger‘s follow-up draws heavily on the setting for the Stalker video games. So heavily that I’m kind of amazed it was able to be published… though I suppose it could be argued that it’s actually Roadside Picnic‘s setting. Regardless, if you liked that first novel this one’s quite similar in structure and character behavior.

  • ULTIMATE LEVEL 1: NEW FREEDOMS & NEW POTENTIAL

Posted on February 4, 2025 1:24 pm by Offkorn Comment

The fifth of Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 novels continues along the path previous entries set out. Nothing particularly noteworthy one way or the other in it beyond that there are quite a few technical errors in the last quarter and the cliffhanger ending.

New Potential, however, is something completely different. I almost dropped it barely a chapter in since I most definitely do not read this kind of book to follow restricted or de-powered protagonists. That this series has mostly been more of an ensemble thing meant having that taken away was another mark against it. Still, I decided to force my way through and… yeah, it’s not very good. I’ll give the follow-up a chance, but my expectations now that the protagonist has been boosted worlds ahead of the rest of the party are at rock bottom.

Aside from some grammatical issues and a bizarre cover image, the fourth book in D.C. Haenlien‘s Adelheid series is okayish I suppose. I’m not really sold on the vampire aspects though and the war focus isn’t all that interesting. Not sure if I’m going to continue it or not at this point.

Haylock Jobson‘s second Heretical Fishing novel starts off rather worse than the prequel; it goes a bit too heavy on the cultivator aspects while introducing far too many new awakened animals. Yet, at the very end, an utterly ridiculous plan to assault the capital comes together beautifully and makes all the lead-up worthwhile.

I’ve got almost no complaints with the third entry in Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 series. It continues merrily along the path it set out with the only hiccup being an incredibly out of place drinking contest. Plenty of action, some comedy, and even a bit of notable romantic development.

The second of Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 novels, Shattered Limits continues along the outlined progression path with the only hiccups being the occasional technical error and unclear formatting (time skips and scene breaks aren’t visually distinct from conversation breaks). If you liked the first book there shouldn’t be any surprises here, though do note it ends on a cliffhanger.

Michael Anderle‘s first three C.O.R.P.S.E. novels (Out in the Cold, Blade in the Dark, Silence After the Storm) tell the story of a highly advanced android assassin navigating a path between getting revenge on her mentor’s murderer and learning what it is to be human. The first two are quite good, but things begin to fray in the third with somewhat forced event developments and awkward romance elements. It took me awhile to get through it and looking at the descriptions for the next three books in the series I suspect they’ll be much worse where the former issue is concerned.

A human-centric space opera, John Van Stry‘s first two Wolfhounds novels are remarkably proficient at depicting shades of indefensible behavior. There aren’t really any unequivocal ‘good guys’ here, yet the protagonists still manage to be the people you want to win in the end. My only complaint so far is that the romantic development in the first book is quite abrupt.

Suffering a bit from a shaky start, Shattered Dreams is the first of Shawn Wilson‘s Ultimate Level 1 novels. The (minor) issue here is that the protagonist starts out terrible yet does a complete 180 after leaving town. So… why not just have him start out with that decent personality? It wouldn’t have changed anything about the awakening event itself, would’ve made reading through said event far less painful, and avoided any whiplash inducing characterization issues afterward.

Anyway, opening chapter aside the book is a perfectly engaging action-focused zero-to-hero type of story. Particularly notable things at this point would I suppose be the dark undercurrent relating to the protagonist’s skill and the absence of any serious romance elements.
